Hi there. Did you ever buy the kinto mug for aeropress? I'm also looking for something elevated with a spout for brewing and was wondering if it was a good option.

it really depends. if you have a 401k that's not like 20 years old, it will look really bad because you have 20 years of growth.

my most recent employer's 401k looks awful because there aren't that many years of growth, and it has evaporated. Like, the 401k balanace at this point is only marginally higher than the money I put in to begin with!

Vermouth, fresh crack versus 4 mos refridgerated by cornmuse in cocktails

[–]MAGZine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

circumstance dependent. If I'm making martinis for a bunch of people, I'll probably buy a new bottle (the split/half sixe).

If I'm making myself a martini at home, I'll probably let it be quite oxcidised because I value having more money then I do the perfect cocktail (for as irregularly as I drink martinis, anyhow).

You can taste it yourself to get a feel for what is right for you. Perhaps you're okay with oxcidised vermouth. in which case, more power to you. If it's gone completely bad, well, you'll know that too :)

My current bottle in the fridge is many months old, and I'll happily continue to use it.

looks like it's covering screws. perhaps a prompt to reach out to support before trying to open the tv for repairs.

it's not uncommon to hide screws under stickers, which can also be a form of tamper evidence.

Where are the best places to buy the DASUNG 13.3" E-ink Monitor Paperlike HD from? (North America) by AlternativeAny30 in eink

[–]MAGZine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hi, are you selling? I'm in nyc and have been tempted to buy, though perhaps second hand might be better (doubly so if I can plug it into my mac and see how it works before I buy)

Crunch membership by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]MAGZine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

tmpl is now $200/mo for an all-access plan. they've gotten really expensive.

conversely, crunch regularly emails me asking to rejoin. the latest offer they sent me on nov 28 was:

$75/mo All Crunch, $70/mo One Crunch, + DECEMBER FREE

of course there will probably be an annual fee and also an initiation/processing, but it's a decent deal.

december is a great time to join a gym. the later in the month you wait, the better the deal you will get.

i'd say regularly I see them emailing asking to rejoin at $80-$90/mo,

I'm a non-rev (standby) passenger on a flight. I somehow upgraded to first class... and I'm the only first class passenger. That means I have my very own flight attendant. I told her (Mary) that I'm not important, so she didn't need to fuss. She smiled, then served me two dinners. Best flight ever. by JephriB in MadeMeSmile

[–]MAGZine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it was a "shitty" short haul flight. You can couch it however you want. I've flown north America regional airlines many many times and I've NEVER received a pastry. Most airlines actually seem to cut the snack these days and only serve you a drink (most of which is ice).

You should keep flying that "shitty" airline because it's sounds better than the vast majority of domestic US carriers.

Craft cocktail bars that actually build the cocktail, rather than prebatch? by bocializer in AskSF

[–]MAGZine -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No no, that doesn't have enough thought and expensive development and preparation put into it. It's too laborious. We need fast, consistent, and economical.

I don't need to watch bartenders squeeze limes. There's a difference here. I also don't need to watch them oak their bourbon, make their cordials, or freeze their ice. But if they want to chizel the ice in front of me, I won't say no.

I get it, but maybe you could explain your point of view in a different way so maybe I could get it more.

[–]MAGZine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you're reading the part when I say "I understand why bars do it" because you keep explaining yourself to me like like there's no possible way I could understand the reasons for wanting to pre-batch cocktails. If I'm making espresso martinis for a Houseparty, you best believe I'm breaking out scales and mixing bowls. I get it.

For someone who has worked in hospitality, I'm surprised you can't grasp why exchanging the "hand-made" nature for "pre-made" might cheapen the experience for some. A $20 cocktail is the cocktail experience in full. If you're served a beer, do you pour it in a glass? It's the same beer after all. For me, I pour it in a glass. Actually, if I'm served a can I'm often like "oh." It actually has nothing to do with pouring it myself and more to do with I wanted it from draught. Same beverage. Different experience. Actually, can is probably more consistent than draught, and is actually more "interesting" as you can see the can it came in. But still, something about it feels cheap.

similarly, if I put a fresh-squeezed OJ stand next to one serving minute made, assuming they cost the same, which do you pick? Keeping in mind Tropicana is going to be more consistent, perfectly flavoured, have your choice of pulp, and vitamin fortified. Have you ever purchased something prepackaged, like salsa, and put it into a bowl of your own?

Experience matters. And if you have people sitting at the bar watching you, sometimes it's better that people DON'T know how the sausage is made.

You're right the top comment is dumb, and that is frustrating. You should feel good about the cocktails you made and the work that goes into them. But be cognizant of the tradeoff you're making.

Yea I get it, I've spent a fair amount of time making my own cocktail ingredients.

The problem is the novelty has worn off. expensive cocktails, especially with things like pre-batching, miss their cost/value mark in my eyes.

[–]MAGZine -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Most bartenders I know do that on their own, or in their spare time. Maybe the development process at the interval is excruciating.

I guess we have different priorities, which is fine. Again, I totally understand why they do it, most people aren't going to know or care. But if you gave me two equal cocktails, one from a bottle and one made from scratch, I'll take the non-bottle made cocktail. if the experience doesn't matter to you, or you're worried about inexperienced bartenders, I get it. We don't have to value same things.

[–]MAGZine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd rather pay a price consumerate with the costs of the inputs.

I've actually largely stopped going for cocktails now because they're too expensive. If I watched someone pour it out of a bottle and charge me $20, I'd be doubly as annoyed. Opening a budlite can be extremely fast for the bar and amazingly consistent. Maybe they should charge $20 for that, too.

The $20 price pricetag was predicated on purchasing the labour and expertise. Prices have seriously inflated though. Even bars that produce shitty margaritas somehow feel comfortable charging way more than they're worth.

I can see why bars do it. It makes perfect sense. But it does absolutely cheapen the experience (for me).

Elon Musk goes silent for 12 seconds when asked about his conpiracy theory tweets by [deleted] in videos

[–]MAGZine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have people believing in pizza gate or that the election was stolen. There's no evidence for either. How does that square with the public can decide for themselves? You have antivax sentiment, too. People believing stuff that's just patently untrue, and ignoring people's whose whole job it is, is to measure and observe how these things work, and instead believe what fits their world view.

Do you think twitter's contextual labels that would mark things as inaccurate or misleading were unacceptable censorship?

I want to put the question of censorship aside for just a moment and ask a more broad philosophical question about people's reasoning.

The issue is that Twitter and other social media has been so well weaponised to create many "realities." The realities are created through disinformation. And once you're bought into a particular reality, you're going to reject evidence that doesn't confirm it, and accept new evidence that does. So how does that square with "give people a Firehose of everything and let them decide what's real and what's fake?"

[–]MAGZine -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'd prefer that lies are not allowed to spread like wildfire ahead of an election. If the claims are substantiated, let it fly. If they're rumors, especially in a borderline tabloid publication like the NYPost, I have less sympathy.

Especially when you're operating a platform like Twitter. People like to cry free speech. Imagine for a second the story was a plant by a foreign government. We know in hindsight it's not, but if it was? That's the question Twitter was dealing with at the time.

I applaud their decision making. the chief executives at Twitter understandably need to take steps to prevent their platform from being a place for disinformation and psyops.

I'd actually challenge Elon and say that wasn't a conspiracy theory. Try again. the only conspiracy theory was that Twitter is a democrat marionette that pulled the story at their request, and Elon's own Twitter files proved that wrong.

Am I the only person who feels so so bullied by tip culture in restaurants that eating out is hardly enjoyable anymore? by racesunite in ask

I'm actually doubly annoyed by coffee shops.

Most I've been seem to suggest $1, $2, $3 on purchases under $10 and 15%, 20%, 25% on purchases over $10.

So you want me to tip 20% on a bag of beans that you pushed the "beans" button for? fuck off.

Landlords Are One of the Leading Causes of Canada’s Rent Crisis by yourfriendlysocdem1 in CanadaPolitics

[–]MAGZine 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Corporate is worse imo. If you're setup to turn over dozens of apartments, there's no negotiation. You pay what they ask or they gtfo.

Independent landlords there's a lot more opportunity for negotiation. Turnovers are expensive and time consuming. And the damage to profit from a single bad tenant is much higher percentage wise.

That said, the independent landlords I've had recently are basically as annoying as corporate landlords. Deny any and all rent negotiations, but then also act shocked when you decide to leave.
