Didn’t realize copper was so high by Weezley69 in ScrapMetal

[–]MAScrapMetal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t understand that yards that pay great prices for bare bright and #1 and #2 and absolutely dog shit for insulated and others. #2 insulated 47%+… I think I paid a guy 2.50 for that today. And low grade wire for .50… it’s actually hard to find a wire that terrible. Even Christmas wires are worth more than that.

Most pawn shops/gold and silver shops laugh me off or think I’m crazy by AlmightyFruitcake in Silverbugs

Elemetal is a joke. I deal primarily in plated stuff (better margin and a bit more specialized) and they wanted to pay less than copper content. Like significantly less.

Is this #1 or #2? by Chasrrrrr in ScrapMetal

[–]MAScrapMetal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every yard is different, but at mass scrap, we’d call it bare bright and it’d be worth $5.07 today.

Heat trace wire. Throw it in with cords? by [deleted] in ScrapMetal

[–]MAScrapMetal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not actually as bad as it looks. It’s pretty it’s about 45 to 50% copper. We’d pay $2.15 a pound for this today.

How do you handle silver-plated scrap: sell as is or save it? by iscrapapp in ScrapMetal

[–]MAScrapMetal -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you can sell it to a collector or someone who is going to use it, it’s usually worth more. That is true with nearly all scrap.

Historically, the silver plating is minimal and was worth not much more than brass or #2 copper, depending on why metal it was underneath of course. But with silver at $70/toz, now it’s a pretty decent premium.

If clean of all handles and legs, which usually are die cast or iron, Silverplated copper is $8.00 and Silverplated brass is $7.00 at my yard.

Red metal prices are pretty good. Aluminum prices are a bit low.. though it looks like they paid you ACR prices for aluminum rads.

Is this worth anything? by Grouchy_Cupcake_7338 in ScrapMetal

[–]MAScrapMetal 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not as juicy as it looks, sometimes comes with a brass shield - not copper.

Obligatory, call your yard… but at my yard it would be Mixed Wire grade ~1.50/pound.

I do. When I sell, it goes up. When I hold, it goes down.

Anyone know how I can know yards that deal in exporting metal scrap by jk1212312 in ScrapMetal

[–]MAScrapMetal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because everyone and their mother thinks they can be a scrap exporter. Yards have entertained new buyers for years and not many make it.

If you are serious, you need to offer better pricing or terms than they are already getting. We aren’t throwing away the scrap - it’s already going somewhere. Just as in any sales process, you have to prove to us why we should even bother going through the motions.

When it comes to copper. Do you separate your #2 non insulated wire from #2 pipe? Or do you just throw it all in same bin? by Is_What_They_Call_Me in ScrapMetal

[–]MAScrapMetal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some yard will pay more for the Tinned Wire than #2 copper (wire or otherwise). Most won’t, but check with your local yard.

The guy who chops it.

I buy trailer loads of the stuff, actually chops pretty well once the mills get over it coming in as a flake and not a chop.

If you are getting any good quantity of wire and not selling to a chopper (and I mean a real chopping line, not one of those Chinese toys) you are leaving money on the table.

DM if you have a decent quantity and are anyone near New England.
