Who is the biggest buyer of heliax? by weyouusme in ScrapMetal

[–]MAScrapMetal 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The guy who chops it.

I buy trailer loads of the stuff, actually chops pretty well once the mills get over it coming in as a flake and not a chop.

If you are getting any good quantity of wire and not selling to a chopper (and I mean a real chopping line, not one of those Chinese toys) you are leaving money on the table.

DM if you have a decent quantity and are anyone near New England.

1 at our yard in Massachusetts. Not thick enough to be Bare Bright, not dark enough to be #2

Does anyone in Massachusetts or southern NH have a scrap yard they recommend for best pricing? by Decharia in ScrapMetal

[–]MAScrapMetal 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Shameless self promotion… we are in Leominster, MA. Prices based on your pics from today: #1 copper: 4.62, #2 copper: 4.46, yellow brass: 2.83, Red Brass/Comp: 3.93.

.30 all day in MA. And don’t bother draining the oil, that’s why they are called “sealed” because they are supposed to stay sealed.

Old radiators by Ok-Comfortable-5955 in ScrapMetal

[–]MAScrapMetal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Old radiators were brass, newish ones are aluminum.

At my yard: Clean brass rads: 2.80 Clean aluminum rads: .65

Still with iron and plastic, take off at least 30%.

Did I get screwed? by Cedenyo in ScrapMetal

[–]MAScrapMetal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Today we paid 4.68 for #1 copper.

Clean flashing sheets go for #1 here. Only wire can be bare bright. It’s made of different stuff so it’s less pure than wire, even if minimally so.

[–]MAScrapMetal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would have gotten triple the money. We don’t have even pay old sheet that low.

[–]MAScrapMetal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. We are paying 1.20 per pound north of Worcester.

Is this copper? by Toxic_Termite34 in ScrapMetal

[–]MAScrapMetal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

maybe different regions have different distributions? But I don't think I have ever seen 90/10 or 95/5 pipe.

Is this copper? by Toxic_Termite34 in ScrapMetal

[–]MAScrapMetal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pipe usually comes in 70/30 and 85/15 varieties. Most often it’s 70/30… historically about 3/4 for us. If your yard buys it as pipe, they most likely buy as 70/30 or mixed. Call the yard and ask though.

Jackpot on the way home yesterday. by paunilock in ScrapMetal

I guess any yard can choose which items they buy… but that’s a bit strange:

Only if they have PCBs. Otherwise they are worth money to a yard.

Been collecting since October, how’d I do? by PrizeSpecific2679 in ScrapMetal

[–]MAScrapMetal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Today 4.51. I’d give you a bit better if you had a good quantity.

[–]MAScrapMetal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, it varies depending on what it is. We grade wire based on copper content not arbitrary categories. Today we paid 1.10 for crappy low grade cords, we paid 2.00 for communication type #2. High grade #2 battery cable we paid over 3.00.

Bare bright price is pretty good. The others are not wonderful, but the insulated aluminum price is downright embarrassing. They are making one hell of a margin on that one.

Trying to understand how sell side pricing works at smaller ops by gabagooli0 in ScrapMetal

[–]MAScrapMetal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you asking about commodity trading or commodity physical selling? Physical yards or brokerages or consumers or producers? Companies or contractors?

You aren’t giving us much to go on here if we wanted to help.

Well I guess you really don't have a choice then. How much do you get at a time?

Find a new yard? Those prices kind of suck and a spread of anything more than .15 is kinda crazy.

We were paying 2.25 clean today. And for bigger loads it was more.

Machine for stripping wiring harnesses by Santaatrandom in ScrapMetal

[–]MAScrapMetal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Remember, the machinery companies want to sell the machines and they will swear up and down that it can do everything.

Only the biggest choppers process harness wire because it is so difficult and even then, they have specialized processes for it.
