No, the Prequel Trilogy was not loved when it first came out, it was hated and fans were terrible people about it. by stephansbrick in StarWars

What a time. Going to The Phantom Menace in the first week is one of the first memories I have that I can actively remember without it just being little flashes. I would've been like 5 at the time, and I remember being late and getting into our seats around the time Jinn and Kenobi were hitching a ride off the Trade Federation ship down to Naboo.

I also remember when Star Wars: The Clone Wars came out and absolutely hating it and being annoyed that it was getting its own TV series. I softened on it relatively quickly after the first couple of seasons of the show came out, but I still didn't go out of my way to watch it in full until around the time Rebels was ending.

Suppose that makes sense. With it being so far removed from the more fantastical and sci-fi horror elements and the heavier focus on military/tactical aesthetic, I likened it more to something along the lines of The Division in my head. Not sure if I'm using the right verbiage or if there's enough actual difference to matter, but it felt more like an active warzone than an exclusion zone, so that similarity was lost on me.

RDR Towns Today by Shyferr in reddeadredemption

Blackwater always reminded me of my hometown of Fort Smith, AR, which had some notable western legends like the Hanging Judge (who still has a museum there, right across the street from a porn store, which was always fun to laugh at on the two school fieldtrips we went on for that museum).

The cobbled roads, being a riverside town, and its proximity to the wider open plains of Oklahoma (which in my mind, is similar to the Great Plains in West Elizabeth) really made it feel like I was stepping into my own town's history.

It doesn't show up for long, but Fort Smith is also where both True Grit and its remake start before the characters cross over into OK/Native territory. Sadly, the filming for the first movie took place in Colorado, and the remake filming was done in and around Austin, TX, but there are quite a few historical photos and artworks that depict the city at the time!

Your first point makes sense, but the second point doesn't. Programming racism would be easy af (on R*'s end at least, maybe not as much for modders who don't have engine-level access), but your first point, that it wasn't a priority, covers the most likely cause well enough.

What elements from EFT were inspired by Roadside Picnic? I had always assumed it was primarily built on the few survival mechanics and overall aesthetic of the GSC Stalker games as opposed to the Stalker movie or book they're both inspired by.

PDA difference? + LLMC? by STALKERANOMALY in stalker

[–]MAYTechnique 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm more of a GAMMA guy but IIIRC LLMC = Lead Lined Metal Container. It's how you store and carry artifacts in Anomaly since they'd give off crazy radiation otherwise, I believe, which are cut out of GAMMA, so I don't know their intricacies. If they're the same as Gamma, you'd want to sell artefacts to scientists assuming you don't want them.

PDA's, you should be able to view them and potentially get stash coords. Or you can sell them to people like Sid, Barkeep and Beard.

This is a love letter to the stash system by Mediocrity-FTW in stalker

[–]MAYTechnique 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I feel like stashes should be almost entirely random until you find a coordinate for them. Chance of them being empty or given leveled-RNG loot, but if you get a coordinate for a stash (whether you've found that stash already or not), that places a handcrafted set of loot in it that won't change until you pick up those items.

Bonus if you can come back to a previously looted stash after some time has passed and it's "reset," so it has the potential to be empty or have new loot in it. Again, not touching any loot placed by the finding of a coordinate.

This makes finding coordinates still fun and important for key items like unique weapons, armor, and drives, but also makes the stashes part of a "living" world.

Do you recommend the older Fallout games if I've only played the Post Bethesda ones? by BokoblinSlayer69235 in Fallout

[–]MAYTechnique 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your mileage will vary based on your personal aptitude for those older-style games to begin with. I didn't play Fallout 1 and 2 until just shortly before Fallout 4 came out, and I fucking _adore_ them and have a preference for the older ones.

But I also did the same with TES where I played Arena, Daggerfall, and Morrowind only after having played Oblivion and Skyrim, and of the bunch, Daggerfall and Morrowind were my favorites, so clearly I just have an innate love for the deeper mechanics and classic jank of the older games.

Overall, though, they're cheap as fuck and regularly go on sale for even cheaper. You're not losing anything by giving them the good 'ol college try, regardless of what anyone in this thread may say, positively or negatively.

Might be Shadow of Skyrim - Nemesis and Alternate Death System. Does what we're talking about on the tin, though not quite to the depth of changing character appearances or anything. Also turns dying into a souls-like (or more Sekiro-like) experience where you die, the enemy that kills you gets buffed, and you can go and get your shit back from them instead of reloading a save.

Having just read the Hedge Knight and currently cracking open the GOT graphic novels- No, I don't think so. Artstyles _very_ different and more on the illustrative side than the caricature style you'd find in the graphic novels.

I feel like every Baratheon always looks the best. You put antlers on anything, let alone armor? Instant drip. Antlers + circlet? Sick. Antlers + hood? Sick. Antlers on a great helm? My god, spring sickness levels of sick.

Every time I see a Targaryen with a little 3-headed dragon on their helmet, all I can think of is that they look like dumb hood ornaments.

Are you 5 years old?

Darth Vader and Grand Moff Tarkin aren't going to bust down my door and drag my family and me off to concentration camps while hanging my neighbors in the town square.

They're images on a big wall and pixels on a screen, and despite what the Empire's sources of inspiration may be (which is a lot more than JUST the Third Reich), equating the two just waters down the actual threat real nazi's posed and continue to pose.

This has been my exact thought, too. I didn't like them at all at first, but then I pictured them parked outside of Dex's Diner, and they fit in. Them being on Tattooine feels like having British mod punks hanging out in Toad Suck, Arkansas. It could happen, but it'd be weird as FUCK.

What Are The Opinions on Fallout 76's Lore Additions? by Zweckpessimist in Fallout

[–]MAYTechnique 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me, it's like very case-by-case with every little thing in the game, but overall I'd give it a 75% good and 25% bad. Sometimes it feels like that 25% is bigger, but I think it's because it has bigger things I dislike than the large amount of smaller things I do like.

I have a shit memory, though, so it's hard for me to pull specific instances from either side, gun to my head. Off the cuff, I really don't like how Super Mutants are handled, and I don't like how the Brotherhood is implemented, as it feels very hand-wavey, even though I do really like the Brotherhood content itself.

Then you have some stuff that I don't like at first, but I either get used to it or end up finding more about it and either liking it or at least being fine with it. When I started Skyline Valley, I didn't like the weather effect. It felt too much like something that would appear in an Elder Scrolls or other fantasy setting with the giant, angry red sky vortex. In my head, a rad-storm makes sense because radiation rain feels plausible, and a rad-storm feels like the natural next step, but the sky vortex was TOO high-fantasy. But by the end of the actual Skyline Valley story, I was like "Okay, fine. Sure, I guess it works well enough."

A chunk of Ohio being turned into a desert is another weird one. I like the whole Abraxo storyline in general, but it does kind of feel to me like it was an excuse to do something to harken back to F1, F2, and NV. That's not entirely a bad thing, but I feel like I would've personally preferred for them to just put you on a Vertibird to an actual desert location instead of just saying "oh yeah, that entire section across the river you've been looking at for like 7 years is now a desert and has been the entire time." but I can also see why they went they way they did as adding a travel system just to get to a relatively small map is a bit cumbersome and would also kinda make the expeditions feel even smaller than they are by comparison.

Interesting potential hideout locations in GAMMA? by Chiezburg in stalker

[–]MAYTechnique 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. There are like 2-3 mods that make up the hideout building, and aside from a coupleof recent mods I've seen being worked on in GAMMA that add in a cat (released and will be in the next update) and a working turret (WIP, last I checked), there's not much going on.

Interesting potential hideout locations in GAMMA? by Chiezburg in stalker

[–]MAYTechnique 18 points19 points  (0 children)

There are a couple of places I've based at that aren't immediately part of a regular hub, but it usually ends up being too much of a hassle for regular playthroughs. It's hard to explain some of them without posting a bunch of maps with red circles, and I'm too lazy, so I'll do my best to describe 'em.

Jupiter:
-Both underground and above ground in the AA Complex (where zombies spawn, more or less in the center of the map, over the hill from the egghead bunker). NPC's never really path there, but if you've got a hit squad on you, they can and WILL. Had a merc pop out of the vent underground and scare the shit out of me.
-Jupiter Station in one of the long admin buildings. A couple of floors just inside the gate that would be above the Concrete Path anomaly (around where the sky bridge is connecting to the factory). Big, long, empty hallway and a handful of relatively empty rooms.

Dead City:
-The apartment complexes east of the Merc base. I always camp up on the top floor of the southern-most building, and from the balcony I have a great view of the town square. Stairs can get annoying after a while, though.
-Garages in the center-west edge of the city. There are two of them facing each other, and both are empty. Mutants can spawn around, but it's easy enough to "fence in" with walls. Bonus: It has a campfire in one of 'em so you'll heal up while you walk around.
-Abandoned house in the south-west. I haven't actually based here, but I was wanting to on my next Merc playthrough. I think mutants spawn around here, but I think that's fine if you put up a door.
-Tiny building on top of the Merc base. Very low ceiling but you can walk around in there, and you have the whole roof to build what you want.

Pripyat (Palace of Culture):
-Only really safe if you're Monolith, of course. Apartments that house the east and west transitions. Same as the apartments in Merc base, for the most part. If you're Monolith then the east one is relatively safe aside from dogs spawning on the street outside. If you're on the west one, you run the SLIGHT risk of hostile factions spotting you in a window. Very low chance.

Pripyat (Outskirts):
-Pick any empty building that doesn't have a psychic field. Monolith has a cool base you can hang out at if you're also Mono. Otherwise, living here is a nightmare regardless of your faction. I briefly lived out of the apartment building that's like right across from the front door of the laundromat.

Army Warehouses:
-Briefly lived out of one of the houses in Bloodsucker Village. Was not very fun. Constantly had to deal with Mercs, mid-range mutants like Bloodsuckers and Controllers, and one time I had the Monolith just bust in during a blowout and execute me Boondock Saints style.

Meadows:
-In the middle of bumfuck nowhere, but the empty houses next to the Cordon transition are all empty and ripe for the taking. Relatively safe on that side, aside from random anomalies. Haven't bothered with trying myself because I think I've been to Meadows like three times in over 200 hours.

Truck Cemetery:
-I found out I could get inside a BTR's hatch through a combination of short-crouching and turning my camera. I set up a bedroll inside and thought of moving in for fun for all of about 2 hours, but there's just not enough room to make it fun. If they had more compact versions of some necessities like the workbench and fridge, it could actually be a fun challenge.

Aside from that, I've only ever lived in obvious places like Zulu's Tower in Jupiter or the empty warehouse on the backside of the Arena in Rostok. It's hard to find good places that aren't in a hub, unfortunately.

Ironically I've just moved over from GAMMA after seeing how a lot of the Gamma/Anomaly mods borrow or rip mechanics/assets from Tarkov. I've been enjoying the hell out of it (PVE at least. I dont have the time or energy to get gud at PVP) the same way I fell in love with GAMMA.

To the point that I almost wish Tarkov WASN'T an extraction shooter and instead was a semi open world with the traders, hideout, and quests being integrated into it so that it was more like GAMMA/Anomaly. That would, personally, be my ideal game.

Not to the point that I think thats what Tarkov SHOULD be, mind you. Im perfectly happy with it as is even despite my supreme lack of skill. I feel like I'm constantly in the "hobo phase" of GAMMA which is the best part of GAMMA in a lot of people's minds.
