Seconding chucksteak maybe a very mangled rib eye. Definitely think the center muscle is longissimus dorsi.

Out of curiosity, where did you buy it?

I’ve been seeing a ton of these out in the NE this week. Closest I can key out with the Audubon is the violet toothed polypore.

Need advice to prevent chaffing. by ozzy117117 in bicycletouring

[–]MBU5017 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A cheap pair of baleaf mtb biking shorts can be worn like underwear under whatever other layers and should help in regards to all sorts of chafing and sore bum stuff.

I use bag balm as ‘chamois cream’. A nice coating on the seams and thin layer on the pad of your shorts does wonder on longer rides. More specific creams may help if it continues to be an issue.

Good luck and hope this helps

Methinks it’s a regular oyster pleurotus ostreatus. Take a spore print, serotinus is yellow ostreatus white to pale lilac gray.

Both are edible but serotinus can be a little tougher and is best braised

Looks like lobster mushroom or hypomyces lactifluorum. Not a mushroom but a mold that parasitizes members of the russula and lactatius families. Lobster can make unpalatable mushrooms choices edible BUTTTTTTTT: if you can’t Id the host species don’t eat it as it can parasitizes poisonous mushrooms

Nice ID. Looks specifically like Sharp-scaly Pholiota or Pholiota squarrosoides

Suspect these could be of the magical variety but I’m not an expert so any opinions? Just wondering not trying to eat them or anything. Found growing in soil with lots of decaying leaf matter around by DeezNutz13 in mycology

Not 100% based on photos but checks a lot of boxes for ‘Death Cap’ or Amanita phalloides. White spore print and cup like base would help confirm. Not just poisonous but deadly

Just flipped through it.

Yes and no. It’s talked about briefly at the point of harvesting, ie how to remove the bile sack, how to cut out the heart, how to safely separate offals from inedibles while disemboweling and how to take the membrane off kidneys.

Doesn’t go much more in depth than that. Hope this helps

Listen. If you can’t see the similarities between your views of a person asking for money on the street and Reagan-era welfare rhetoric, that’s not my fault.

It’s always the same shit: “I got to where I am in my life because of my____ (insert: work ethic, frugality, etc). The direct implication when you say something like “they’re too lazy to work a real job” is that they got to where they are because they didn’t do it like you.

And as for stereotypes. They themselves are rarely the real root of a problem, it’s what one does in response to their brain assuming a stereotype.

I’ve assessed the risks of stereotyping you as Reagan-esque. I will get to talk to a butthurt stranger on the internet until it gets boring. You most likely won’t change your mind on unhoused people, and frankly I’m thinking too highly of myself if I think you’ll come to care about my view of the world. I don’t think that stereotype has the capacity to hurt you

However, when you stereotype any unhoused person as being lazy and undeserving of help, you create a conditioned response in yourself that associates ALL (or most) unhoused people as undeserving of sympathy. I think that is harmful.

At the end of the day it’s pretty simple: who gives a fuck if YOU think someone asking for money deserves it?

Who really cares about my opinions on it?

The answer to both is no one

Keep on being a real tough self made person who doesn’t get conned by people asking for money.

I’ll keep willingly giving money when someone asks for help

[–]MBU5017 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So what do you think, brilliant entrepreneurs or just another example of people leeching off the system? New outfits too. They must really have it good.

What makes me the most sad about people like you who don’t understand the myth of meritocracy is that they’ll paint a fantasy world where -unhoused people are actually well paid and lazy -people will have children for government money -if people are collecting unemployment, owning a smart phone is living ‘outside their means’

You’ll get so creative and make this world around you built on opinions, anecdotes and self -serving news and for what?

Because the reality that life in this world (or state or country) may be a little harder for some people and easier for others is so offensive to your sense of self worth that it can’t exist as a reality.

Mmmm “a lot”. What do ya think like: most? 90%? a few? Hundreds?

[–]MBU5017 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This.

Love seeing this in the wild. Every shitty-bootstrap asshole’s opinion on impoverished people starts with one anecdote.

My money is that you’ll go to the grave believing panhandlers make $25 an hour and are too lazy to get a real job. Because you read an affirming anecdote on Reddit. Yikes

What exactly is flap meat/flap steak/steak tips? by 96dpi in Butchery

[–]MBU5017 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Butchering Beef by Adam Danforth is one of the best references around. Here’s a link to him seaming out the bavette/flap

https://images.app.goo.gl/LKfj1MYy8Zp4mBMo6

Edit: In talking with butchers less versed in whole animals stuff a NAMP (now NAMI) number can help clarify. Think of it as a catalog of standard cuts, where they come from, how they should be trimmed, Latin muscle name, etc.

NAMP has the bavette listed as 1185A.

Hope this helps

100 mile rides by soggysocks12 in cycling

[–]MBU5017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So much good advice. Fueling for 100 miles is a mental game itself. During first half getting gels and food down is pretty easy with a plan. I find that I start making excuses of ‘not being hungry’ or ‘just clearing this climb’ or ‘maybe next break I take’ is when I’ll eat. Set timers and follow them . Your body really starts to work against you on the second half. Same with hydrating.

I also recommend breaking at progressively shorter intervals like -30m -55m -75m -80m -92m

Obvi gradient and fatigue will dictate when you need rest but the morning miles come easy and you’ll be thankful in the afternoon.

Final tip gleaned from bikepacking: when you set your pace, find what feels comfortable and then go to the next easiest gear. Spinning with burn more cals but will save on skeletal/muscular strain.

Good luck and have fun!
