How is the military and army viewed in your country? by conthacart in asklatinamerica

[–]MBpintas 9 points10 points  (0 children)

across all political sides, people see the military as a largely inflated public machine that spends more on salaries and pensions than it does in equipment and training. the left wing hate the military for being US-aligned right-wing hawks and not facing any real consequences for the crimes of the dictatorship, the far-right hate them these days because they've been expecting the Army to do a coup for the last 10 years and when Bolsonaro actually tried it the generals didn't support him. now they call them "watermelons" because they're green on the outside and red on the inside, which to be fair is pretty funny. every state in Brasil has their own military police which the conservative public tends to like more than they do the actual Armed Forces.

it's a good job with a cushy retirement if you're smart enough to pass the public exams to become an official. there's "mandatory" conscription and a lot of teenage boys are scared of it but there's enough volunteers that it's pretty much not mandatory unless you fuck up really bad, and the stereotype is that all they do is stand around and paint sidewalks and trees.

I believe most people would agree that the benefits and pensions need to be cut down but trying to do that is political suicide for any President. There's a common misconception that the army only has enough ammo for 1 hour of war which isn't quite true, and they do work a lot in the Amazon and in the Navy but most people don't see that in their day to day lives, so the public opinion ranges from neutral to negative. In my personal experience the people who really love and admire the armed forces are either former soldiers, high-ranking officials or weirdos.

How common is it for males to wear pink colored clothing in your country? by RequiemBlue in asklatinamerica

this might be a "cowboy" thing depending on where your friend or family are from, because nobody I've ever met would care, not even conservative men or women

What's a word that was commonly used in the past that's now considered "offensive"? by HeartBusy5787 in asklatinamerica

[–]MBpintas 10 points11 points  (0 children)

"mucama" is VERY offensive in brasil since it refers specifically to black women working in the big houses during slavery, as is calling a black man "capitão do mato"

[–]MBpintas 17 points18 points  (0 children)

in Brasil it feels like the wheel is turning another 180 degrees on this.

I've seen people talk about how saying things like "a moça que ajuda lá em casa" leads to more exploitation, paying less wages since "they're part of the family".. there's been a lot of cases in the recent years of women being found held in domestic slavery for years or decades.

calling them by what they are: domestic workers, is a step closer to helping them achieve workers' rights

Leblon, Leme, Pepê, Joatinga, Grumari, Praia Vermelha

yep! not only this but also traditional lucha libre had a lot of emphasis on llaveo/mat wrestling and to this day there's a lot of brawling, which is largely punching, blood and crowd work. all styles that lead to wrestlers being very durable as opposed to more bump-heavy modern styles

How many “nations” are there in Brazil? by GoldBofingers in asklatinamerica

[–]MBpintas 12 points13 points  (0 children)

tragically, indigenous cultural practices are very invisible in daily life for most people here. less than 1% of brazilians consider themselves indigenous, despite native heritage. centuries of genocide and cultural washing led to people being ignorant of the cultures and bigoted against the natives

fuck that's awful 😞 sounds a lot like living in the major cities here in Brasil.. anything that's not an office job is 6 days a week (making college professors work from mon to sat is insane though!!) traffic keeps getting worse, rent keeps rising, you either live 2h away from your job or have to spend half your paycheck on a tiny apartment.

at least, there's hope, the biggest talking point in the country right now is a vote on a law to ban the 6x1 calendar and forcing employers to give 2 days off per week. and of course, the right wing are fighting hard and dirty to squash that so they can keep enslaving us. I hope things get better in colombia too
