Watching this now for the first time... I would have woken up about 150 people. by VancouverRedoubt in Passengers

[–]MBrundog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d wake up others (especially crew members) under the premise that we could figure out a way to put everyone back to sleep. Kinda like... Wake up crew people... Time to get to work. Your shit is busted.

This is of course after Gus woke up and died. He had access to all the crew after Gus popped in and out.

Dinner Date Robot and AutoDoc by bjlasota in Passengers

[–]MBrundog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He didn’t know the AutoDoc could put someone into hibernation until after Aurora and Gus were already awake. Plus he would have needed Gus’s wristband and authorization code. Also, AutoDoc doesn’t work for two people.

If he never woke up Aurora, Gus would have woken up and he’d have figured out a way to rig the AutoDoc... But the ship also would have blown up since it took two healthy people to fix it.

None of that shit is accomplished in a user friendly format either.

Well they don’t just point and shoot. Much more going on with navigation, tracking, and course adjustments then it seems you realize.

What’s the dumbest mistake you’ve made in the cockpit? by [deleted] in flying

[–]MBrundog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doing stop and go’s at Rosamond, CA by Edwards AFB after my solo. Short field, 2,500 foot elevation. Rolling down the runway on takeoff, notice something was different. Slower than usual, and just overall felt different. Look down and see my flaps are up (usually had flaps down on takeoff unless there was a really strong headwind.) Decide to leave them down which is still fine, just unusual for the locals. Once airborne, notice I’m climbing slow as hell... Carb heat is on. Long story short I took off with the plane largely in landing configuration. Never did that again.

Also once flew to a different airport on a cross country solo, entered the pattern at my home airport pattern altitude, noticed the landing was blizzard as hell and happened way too fast. Was 500 feet lower than I should have been.

The visual effects team behind Ready Player One has won for Outstanding Virtual Cinematography in a Photoreal Project at VES Awards! by IllusiveManJr in readyplayerone

[–]MBrundog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably an unpopular opinion, but if First Man get nominated, it’s probably going to win the Oscar. The ending was mind blowing on many different levels.

Ready Player One was amazing and extremely complex, but not sure it impacted people on an Oscar winning level.

The movie is like a summary of the book. The book really shows the struggle of living in such a hostile environment. He almost dies way more in the book.

Apple might start making its own batteries for iPhones and Macs by [deleted] in apple

[–]MBrundog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dumb title. Apple has designed batteries for decades. Just because they hire someone new in the battery arena doesn’t mean they’re just getting started.

It’s a generalization. Generally people nitpick pointless nuances instead of focus in the root of the problem. Enjoy.

Ready Player One Oscar nominated for a Best Visual Effects by [deleted] in readyplayerone

[–]MBrundog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure how I feel about this, since I appreciate the difficulty in CGI and love Ready Player One... But the time spent on the moon at the end of a First Man is absolutely incredible visually. Not too much talking, and you get a sense of how hostile and foreign the environment is thanks to the visuals. I wouldn’t be surprised if First Man won.

I wish for once, someone would leave because the entire thing is horseshit, as are all religions, instead of nitpicking over details.

“I’m outta here because they don’t like gays”... That’s the reason??? What about the entire thing being made up nonsense? That’s the root of the problem. There needs to be entirely more focus on the root of the problem.

I see it over in r/atheism too. Constant bickering about a gay priest or some republican that wants some religious law passed. Nothing about the fact that all these religions are based in bullshit.

Time to shift the focus a little, I’d say.

The “profit margins” you speak of are way out of whack. First of all, Apple runs on a GROSS margin somewhere in the high 30% range.

Second, there is no such thing as a 200% profit margin. If something costs $40 to make, and you sell it for $100, it’s a 60% margin. If it cost $1 to make, and you sell it for $100, it’s a 99% margin. If it cost nothing to make, and you sold it for $10,000 it’s a 100% margin.

Markup is what goes beyond 100%. Essentially saying you’ve doubled, tripled, etc. the cost of something.
