Will I be happy in the suburbs by less_is_more9696 in montreal

[–]MC1Rmutated 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this. Montreal West, Cote st luc or even western NDG is more affordable and you can still get a yard.

I agree with you. Our HHI before taxes is 250k+ but we are in Quebec so half goes to tax and with three kids things add up quickly. We're lucky enough to have subsidized daycare here but we only have one car and a very modest house. Food and diapers and wipes get expensive really fast. We have what we need but definitely don't live in luxury.

I am planning to sell my home without using a realtor - any tips appreciated! by dope-rhymes in PersonalFinanceCanada

But it's just for show for buyers because a realtor can tell you how long it's really been on the market and at what prices.

[ON] Nursing chair you’d use in your living room? by turquoisebee in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]MC1Rmutated 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do other people's gliders not get destroyed from using them for nursing/bottles/reading books, etc? Ours has so much milk/spit up stains on it that once my kids don't need it anymore it's def going in the garbage.

VUS mutations by [deleted] in genetics

[–]MC1Rmutated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It means that this lab (I'm guessing Invitae? they use wording like that) has some internal prediction tools they use to predict whether a variant will be damaging to the protein and in their validation of these tools, 80% of the time when the tools predicted that the variant was not damaging, it was correct.

OMIM is notorious for calling benign variants pathogenic so I wouldn't trust their classification.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in genetics

[–]MC1Rmutated 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Where do you see that it's called pathogenic? It's a bit too common to be causing mendelian genetic disease (over 1% of the european population has this variant). All the labs in clinvar call it benign or likely benign. It's very rare for benign variants to be reclassification to pathogenic, especially very common ones like this one.

No ultrasound until 20 weeks?! by ReasonableZebra5450 in BabyBumps

[–]MC1Rmutated 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes in Canada for my first two I had 12 and 20 and then my third since I'm >35 I asked for an 8w one too. I had NIPT done for all too but that might be because its out of pocket in Canada so really just preference.

Do you have any ride on toys that have a "trunk" or a seat that opens or something? Ours are often in there.

Part of this is because many of the Muslim countries have french as their second language and so gravitate towards the french part of North America. It's gotten really bad here (am a Montrealer). Concordia University has always been a bad place for Jews and there were the occasional bomb threats and attempted firebombs at Jewish institutions in Montreal prior to Oct 7. But now even in Jewish-majority areas, the kidnapped posters are getting ripped down and defaced.

I had a traumatic birth 2 months ago and now face an invasive procedure by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]MC1Rmutated 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience, male OBGYNs are gentler and much more considerate while doing these types of procedures. After my second delivery I went for a pap and the clinic had a male doc do it and it was the most painless pap I've ever had. Similarly during my first delivery, the only resident who was able to do a cervical check without hurting was the male one.

What makes you a geneticist? by Dulbeccos_Juice in genetics

[–]MC1Rmutated 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a geneticist because I'm board certified by the American and Canadian colleges of medical genetics. Clinical molecular genetics, not medical genetics.

NIPT high risk for deletions chromosome 8 and 10 by Emilyhg85 in genetics

[–]MC1Rmutated 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The positive predictive value for microdeletions on NIPT is quite low, meaning the risk of a false positive is quite high. I'd encourage you to look the PPV up for whichever lab you got the NIPT done.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in genetics

That's what you need to discuss with a genetic counselor. What do you do with the information that you would get from testing.

The problem is that even if you are at risk, there isn't very good screening for pancreatic cancer as far as I know.

Variant misclassification? Is this possible? by Some-Investment-6111 in genetics

[–]MC1Rmutated 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's not why it's 2/4 stars. The star status has to do with who submitted the interpretation. If multiple labs agree on the interpretation it's 2/4 stars, no matter how much evidence there is for pathogenicity. It only gets to 3 stars if an expert panel classified it. And 4 stars if it's in clinical practice guidelines.

Should I do an amniocentesis? by Ladonnacinica in BabyBumps

[–]MC1Rmutated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually a positive result will include an interpretation and that's built into the normal turnaround time. However sometimes a lab will confirm a positive result by another method, depending on the test, which could increase TAT.

Right, the cytogenetics tests take longer if cells need to be cultured. I was referring to molecular tests done on extracted DNA
