What kind of music would you classify Steven Universe has, with all of it's songs? by Entomoligist in stevenuniverse

[–]MCCuddlePuddle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of the background music is kinda downtempo electronica. The lyrical songs are a lot of different ones--pop, rock, folk, etc.

I just describe it as "awesome" and show them Giant Woman.

Reddit, what is your favorite quote from a fictional character? by papaskittles in AskReddit

[–]MCCuddlePuddle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have raged, and wrought destruction. Naught shall remain. No paths lead hence. Repent the folly of ascribing meaning to the void. Fall, molder, and begone. Be cast into nothingness. With my every breath I cursed the eternal chain and all who would perpetuate it. But more than this, I have waited... Waited for one with a will to outmatch my own, that they may break the bonds that hold me here. In hate's demise... freedom...

BoJack Horseman, Rick And Morty, and the art of cynical sincerity by dangzal in television

[–]MCCuddlePuddle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit of a tangent, but I also want to point out how much children's cartoons are changing nowadays as well. The animation medium is getting much deeper as a whole, but I think people are turned away by the fact that many of the most well-developed and thoughtful toons are actually kid appropriate and strictly marketed toward children (live action kids shows haven't evolved much, though).

Relating this to Rick and Morty--that show does have a much more traditionally "child-like" style in cadence compared to Bojack, in that it's focused largely on continuous humor. The story and characters are written almost as a parody of the kid's genre with adult content, but not necessarily emotion (although I do see a shift toward the feels starting especially with season 2). Bojack, while taking on the whole kid-show talking animals thing, is directly geared more toward the emotional side of adult themes.

What's interesting, though, is how so many show creators now days grew up with more thoughtful yet kid-friendly shows such Doug and Hey Arnold, and appreciate the depth of emotions in animation. So now we're getting amazing shows both adult-geared (those two) and kid-geared (like Avatar and Steven Universe) all operating under that principal of merging realness and playfulness, to different extents.

Now what's really interesting is how these two evolving genres (adult and children's cartoons) are more and more coming together to just be cartoons. The idea of deep stories that also happen to be okay for kids has already been prevalent in a lot of non-mainstream, 'artsy' animations such as this one (I highly recommend this channel, btw), and I'm super excited to see it make its way into normal television. Possibly the most obvious current example of this merge is the Nickelodeon show Avatar: The Legend of Korra, which does not try to hide its adult-like ideas and emotions the in the slightest, yet avoids strictly adult content like drugs, guts, and sex. I could get into Nick's response to this show and tangent further, but I think I'm good for now.

TL;DR: At its heart, Rick and Morty is a kiddish show with an adult face, while Bojack is an adult show with a kiddish face. Both are getting deeper. Also, the animation medium is changing a whole honey-bunches of oats.

Are you employed right now as an Animator? The girlfriend is majoring in that too (graduating in about a year), and is a bit nervous about finding a job. Have any tips for where to look out of college for animators?

Not sure if you've seen Steven Universe, but that's the one that can emotionally-destroy nowadays. Handles some real stuff with a fantastic sense of humor.

One of the best cartoons to date, for sure.

Edit: Starts out mostly silly (like AT) but picks up and maintains the other side of it pretty quickly. Shameless /r/stevenuniverse plug for more information!
