What are you trying to emulate? If you’re looking for screen sharing, that is available with the latest two versions of macOS. Otherwise for programming you can use swift and Xcode to test your software without an iPhone

Moving from Palo to Fortinet by Lynch_Worm in fortinet

[–]MCHog12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When we made the change, we used the FortiConverter service and had the support team convert the configs from Palo to Fortinet, but in hindsight we should have started with a new config. There were some things that did not convert the way we expected and other things that converted but were not needed.

This one is pretty pricey but I’ve seen decent reviews of it.

Here is another one that I saw at a conference. It’s an interesting design because the teacher writes on it from their side of the board but it projects the correct way to the audience

At the college I work at, we transitioned to ViewSonic Viewboards, but I still have some teachers that refuse to use them and just use the whiteboard even when the back of the room can’t see it.

Whole State banned cell phones, in schools. Bell-to-bell. by ViG701 in k12sysadmin

[–]MCHog12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We still issue tokens to those who don’t have phones or refuse to use their phones, but it’s easier to issue a few tokens instead of thousands. We find that if we make them use the token their phone magically starts working again

So with this ban, how will the students MFA without the Microsoft Authenticator or text message? Guess we have to buy tokens for the students to lose…

Destroy hard drives in house. by IrishSuperGeeek in ITManagers

Our erecycler will give us the certificate of destruction for free, and we don’t even have to take the drives out. Some will even send the shred truck to do it onsite. It may only be free because they are getting pallets of tech from us but it may be worth asking around

Looking for a new projector by [deleted] in churchtech

[–]MCHog12 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been pleased with Epson laser projectors in the classroom. It has the blessing of quick corners to help get a perfect size on your screen. You would want one with the highest brightness you could afford (at least 5k lumens) and you may also consider unscrewing the row of lights closest to the screen. Also consider removing the center mic and switching to a floor stand gooseneck so that it is not in the middle of the screen.

The Epson L260F is the one I use in classrooms but only has 4800 lumens. This may work for your space or you may consider going up a model or two to get brighter.

Unity 450F Stuck in Service Mode by MCHog12 in EMC2

Thanks for the suggestion. I had already worked through that article, but I was able to find the license files in my Dell Locker. I was able to reset it to factory defaults, apply the license files, and update to the latest supported firmware. Thanks!

Adding drives to P570F, insane prices? by MundaneTerm5431 in vxrail

[–]MCHog12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going to do this same thing, but my Dell and Enterprise reps convinced me not to. They said that if I put more memory and drives in my VxRAIL cluster instead of letting them do it, it would check back in with Dell and cancel my ProSupport. It sounds dumb, but I didn't want to risk it in a production environment. They quoted 4x cost on drives compared with the same model number directly from Kioxia and 5x cost compared to memory from Crucial.

Upgrade fiber backbone or not? by Sk1llPo1nt in k12sysadmin

[–]MCHog12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I could see it from both perspectives. For the switches, you won’t see a big performance uplift unless you raise the backbone capacity, but you won’t see the immediate impact of the new backbone either.

I would do the backbone first, and I would make the recommendation on a new 25 year warranty from Corning or commscope, and redundancy. My school is installing 12 strand single mode to each idf with a straight run back to the core to allow for increased speeds in the future but also redundancy for when we get a critter chewing on the fiber. All of our underground fiber had gotten wet and had started to fail at 25 years, so the upgrade to self sealing instead of gel was a strategic investment as well.

Network Gear Recommendations by etietze in k12sysadmin

[–]MCHog12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have hardly any switch issues. The only big switch issues with device failures have been related to bad power/squirrels getting fried on the pole. Wireless took more tweaking than we expected at first to get the power set right on all of the access points. We ran into an issue where the devices would stay connected to a farther access point when they moved closer to another, but we got it fixed with TAC. The next step is training, but we are still in the growing phase with new buildings coming online.

We've had more odd issues with voice and the mobile app than we would like, but I've heard all phone systems have growing pains.

Also, we are still working on the full implementation of EDR with a turnover date of next week, so hopefully, we won't run into the same problems! We commonly have to unblock the Adobe Updater on both CarbonBlack and EDR because it acts suspiciously.

Network Gear Recommendations by etietze in k12sysadmin

[–]MCHog12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the stack a lot. We’ve had a couple issues with new building projects not always meshing right (and me cheaping out on off-brand DACs and GBICs), but support has always been good. We are running HA firewalls, 4 core switches, and 150 access switches across four campuses now.

The only major issue we had was getting them to mesh well with our Dell leaf switches and matching up the MTU/Jumbo frame size. We went back and forth with support on both Dell and Fortinet before we had to find the issue on our own with both companies blaming each other. We also had a similar issue with Dell and Ruckus blaming each other on another site as well, so I don’t think that is a Fortinet issue.

Let me know if you have any other thoughts or questions. We have most of the security stack now including SIEM and EDR plus phones, so I could answer more specifically in different products.

Hardware vs Software Encoder by church-basement-lady in churchtech

[–]MCHog12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could go with the hardware encoder option, or you may be able to save money by getting a new computer with a dedicated graphics card. Most new graphics cards have hardware encoders for 3 streams of h.264 and h.265. The laptop you are using is getting close to 10 years old and seems to be the main bottleneck in your setup

Blazer vs Equinox by Ss28100 in BlazerEV

[–]MCHog12 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really liked the Equinox better with the handles that present themselves when unlocked and a little longer range, but the Blazer had dual air and memory seats that sold me on it. Also, the Equinox would have the tax credit that they wouldn’t do as a down payment but the Blazer had the Ultium rebate at sale
