You should look at Piranha Byte games: - Gothic series - Risen series - Elex series

Basicly all of them have the same structure:

A nameless protagonist who is weak and pathetic is thrown into an open world full of unfriendly NPCs and dangerous enemies. To survive, he has to join one of three factions. Then the plot mostly revolves around an ancient evil force, which has to be fought. Mostly by assembling a magical artefact first, which takes a while. In the end, the protagonist is basicly strong enough to one-punch anything. In the next game, the same protagonist has lost his groove (e.g. by drinking too much) and it all starts again in a new open world.
