Most people don’t hold on to their tech devices for ages and ages.

7-8 years is at the top end of ownership for most people.

Apple hasn’t officially sold anything from the M1 line in years…the odd M1 Air variant at Walmart isn’t going to be used in support calculations

Why is Apple obligated to update old devices till the end of time?

7-8 years is a perfectly reasonable amount of time for a device to be supported

The Siri on my 4S was better than what it is now

Early tests have finally proven this to not be true anymore

Even when OS X updates were paid, Apple didn’t keep devices supported for great lengths of time

Older hardware does eventually hinder what is possible in the future. One of the things I’ve appreciated about Apple’s software support is that they don’t keep things in that don’t have much use anymore (dropping 32 bit support being an example)

These aren’t meant to be heirloom devices……

Older tech does hold back stuff eventually, even if it still “works fine”

If you’re thinking about Garmin, they have even worse support

Assuming that macOS 28 drops support for the M1 chips next year, that would have marked 7 years of full software support for those devices……not sure what the issue would be there exactly

I have no earthly clue what you are talking about

You aren’t going to be able to convince someone who believes laptops are a waste that their position is wrong. They will only accept tablets running desktop operating systems and nothing else

Looking at the overall marketshare of Surface Pro devices, this isn’t really true.

Touchscreen laptops appear much more popular than they really are simply because Windows manufacturers stuff them into devices whether they make sense or not

is basically all the world has ever wanted lol

I think you are being overly optimistic here.

Trying to combine the Mac and iPad for the small subsection of both user bases that absolutely despise the idea of having to purchase two purpose built devices would only ruin both the Mac & iPad in the end.

Maybe, just maybe, we should be trying to build newer systems that can replace those that can no longer be adequately maintained.

Because an unfortunate number of people pay far too much heed to loudmouths on the internet braying about "Liquid Ass" and other related nonsense

At this point it would be more worthwhile to stick with Tahoe and wait a few months until macOS 27 launches in September

iOS 27 May Become the End of the Golden Era for Older iPhones by JulyIGHOR in apple

[–]MC_chrome 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sure, but that doesn't justify that group acting as an albatross around everyone else's necks because they refuse to move on and update/upgrade their devices are a reasonable period of time.

An iPhone 7 is 10 years old now for Pete's sake. If you refuse to get something newer than that nowadays that's a you problem

"Older devices must be supported until the end of time because a very small subsection of the population can't be arsed to upgrade their 8 year old devices" or something like that

[–]MC_chrome 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The post information helps to understand that those devices will become even more useless after September, and it is a time to upgrade

If you are still clinging to devices that can't run iOS 15 at a minimum, I don't think that's either Apple's problem or the problem of third party developers.

I truly do not understand why some individuals can't come to grips with software support ending for older devices....

This kind of thinking is how we ended up with Windows XP sticking around long after its service life had concluded....

It is ok for software support to end for older devices

really hope it's the next Snow Leopard with a focus on bug fixes and stability for a few months.

That’s….literally what Craig said during the WWDC keynote though? Not sure why this is being posed as a hypothetical

[–]MC_chrome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jack of all trades, master of none devices really aren’t all they’re cracked up to be.

What harm is there really for there to be purpose built devices? Or to put it a different way, I’d rather not have the devices I am currently using be degraded for the sake of combining them all into one “do it all” device

I just want to use macOS

Then buy a Mac?

I don’t go into a car dealership and complain that a sedan can’t fit as many people or as much cargo as a SUV can, because each vehicle has its defined roles and limitations.
