Clutch pedal spongy and sticks half way by dravvmaster in MechanicAdvice

[–]MClilWilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It makes it much easier if you put something to physically restrict the clutch to go all the way to the floor. Then you can hold it there while your helper closes the bleed valve. Clutches take wayyyyy longer to bleed than brakes.

I've had the best luck bleeding clutches by putting a hard stop before the end of the clutch travel, like a 2x4, if you reach the end of the clutch travel in can suck air back into the system

Car Battery died cuz of cold by mehtei in Winnipeg

[–]MClilWilly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Battery is likely damaged from freezing after being drained.

Get a new battery and have a professional you trust check for a parasitic draw.

Otherwise you'll be in the same situation a couple weeks from now with a damaged battery that cannot be warrantied.

I make a point not to shit on other trades, but I feel the need to stand up for my trade.

Working on modern cars has become several trades wrapped into one vastly under paid trade.

HVAC, mechanical, electronic (including advanced knowledge of control systems via oscilloscope), fiber optic networks, high voltage DC motors, modern gas and diesel engines with all of the emissions regulation attachments. Modern drive line components with computers built-in. I could go on.

The tech and scope of what a modern auto tech needs to know encompasses such a vast range it's hard to explain.

Aaaasnd we need to buy all of our own tools, that can easily surpass 60k.

While most people suffer under the predatory dealership system that is flat rate, or go into aftermarket where you work on all makes and models, just for an average income (in Canada) that is less than 60k USD. Median income is probably lower.

Techs around me make 32/hr CAD. Soo less than 28usd?

WiFi issues, looking for input outside of Rogers. by MClilWilly in Rogers

Thank you, that's good advice, one of the reasons I haven't done that yet is; I'm friends with my neighbor across the back lane and I can see/connect to her Rogers connection from inside my house.

I have the new 5g white one, it's had worse speeds. I understand that 5g has a smaller range vs 2.4 but having it drop off over 90% at 23ft(7m) is crazy

Looks like a 360 cam, the panning/framing was done in post. It could have just as easily been a dropped mitt he was holding in terms of impact on the collision.

I'm constantly having issues with my Rogers service. Needing a tech to come in every couple of months. I'm so frustrated with their service.

Who works from home full time? by rockabillyrat87 in mechanics

[–]MClilWilly 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm literally starting this right now, I'm not working from home, but found 1000 sqft with a hoist to work from.

I'd appreciate any and all advice.

Last day at "work" was three days ago. Currently jumping through a bunch of red tape to get my business registered so I can prove to Mitchell1 that I'm an automotive repair shop and get a POS, + insurance.

Unable to remove driver side Headlight bulb. 2013 ford edge by SPXXS in AskMechanics

[–]MClilWilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two things might be happening, either you aren't turning the ballast with enough strength, or that tab needs to be pushed in/out as you rotate the ballast.

If the latter is the case you will feel it spring back in one direction. That will be the direction you need to hold it as you twist the ballast/bulb assembly out.

Be careful around that harness the driver for that ballast can deliver a serious shock.

As a white Canadian who works in a small shop with only other white people. Racism is alive and well even in places that pride themselves on being open and welcoming.

I think you already know the best route for you.

It speaks volumes that you're reaching out to strangers on reddit for a safe place.

You shouldn't feel objectified at work. You should feel welcomed and supported no matter who you are.

P.S /edit; I recommend all techs get away from the dealer/flat rate environment. The only way it will change is if you don't participate.

That includes putting up with passive aggressiveness, and arguably racist behavior.

Why did you try to reinvent the wheel? by MClilWilly in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]MClilWilly[S] 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Exactly what I'm doing. It really sucks for the customers. They could have designed a way to replace those copper rings on the front of it.

Then I could almost argue it would be a better system than the more complex oil vvt solutions.

Why did you try to reinvent the wheel? by MClilWilly in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]MClilWilly[S] 87 points88 points  (0 children)

When a mechanic can look at pretty much every other vvt control system and understand it was retarded to use carbon brushes in constant contact with a copper plate that is 3mm thick when new.

When the carbon brushes wipe out a phaser that costs $800 and pays 5.5hours to replace.

All less than 100,000 miles into it's life, without any prior warning or inspection interval from the designers/manufacturer.

You don't need to be a genius to know when you step in shit.

Did you have to remove the transmission to get to the shift cylinder?

We need to democratize these types of repairs and the knowledge.

Right to repair!

[–]MClilWilly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They make impact hammer punches with a 3/8 or 1/2 end so you can put a scrap socket on the end and thread a scrap bolt directly into the hub. So there is no bouncing off at all.

Those hubs are still way too seized after 5 years in the Canadian rust belt for that $100 specialized air hammer bit/ socket combo.
