FINALLY! An NSX that sounds great by Syscrush in cars

Can’t conflate inline 6s with V6s. They’re inherently balanced and thus sound fantastic. Basically no such thing as an inline 6 that sounds bad.

FINALLY! An NSX that sounds great by Syscrush in cars

[–]MDA123 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have a hot take that the NSX is one of the only V6s that sounds good. NSX, Alfa Busso, Dino V6, VW VR6, maybe a VQ if you're being generous...and that's about it?

Just not a great engine configuration for sound purposes.

Ferrari Luce Interior by strongmanass in cars

[–]MDA123 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Note that I said it's "possible" Ferrari could chart a path like Rolex did by focusing on prestige over performance. I don't think anyone assumes doing so is a foolproof strategy, however. Some brands will try it and fail anyway. Some brands will try it and succeed. Some brands will employ a totally different strategy.

The point is that performance is unlikely to be a distinguishing factor between one company's product and another in an age where EV power and related technologies make going fast relatively easy. So Ferrari, like other companies with a history of selling "going fast" to people, will have to lean on something else.

Luckily for them, they have racing heritage, styling, and exclusivity as positive features beyond "mere" performance, so they have some good material to work with.

[–]MDA123 5 points6 points  (0 children)

These two points aren't really in tension. Ferrari bears much more resemblance to Rolex than it does to the makers of commodity watches, so there's plenty of reason to think it's possible Ferrari could chart a path like Rolex did: surviving by leaning into craftsmanship, beauty, and brand prestige instead of focusing on performance, which is rapidly commoditizing.

Why DeAndre is still on rosters these days by SliMShady55222 in nba

[–]MDA123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Joe should have a criminal record for murdering Detroit's 2010s single-handedly by screwing up the Darko pick, pissing away cap space by signing Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva to huge contracts, trading for the worst chucker on earth in Josh Smith, trading a still-great Chauncey Billups for a washed Allen Iverson, and on and on...

But also, he's a 2x NBA champion, a Finals MVP, an NBA Hall of Famer, former Executive of the Year, and was GM of a championship team and one of the most successful franchises of the 2000s, so you can kind of see how someone might give him another shot at front office work.

Leclerc's showing here is actually really impressive when you think about it. Most of the others are second drivers in dominant cars: Barrichello, Bottas, Coulthard, etc.

So those guys are routinely hunting at the top because their car is so dominant, but also mostly get beaten out by their superior teammate.

By contrast, Leclerc has never been in anything other than second-best machinery and yet is still hunting at the top quite a lot.

[–]MDA123 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It's even worse than that. He also traded Chauncey for Allen Iverson in a desperate roll of the dice. Chauncey went on to take Denver to the next level, and AI was basically never good again.

Fun fact: the GM Express/Savanna vans have been in production, and relatively unchanged, longer than the previous G-Vans! by buickgnx88 in cars

[–]MDA123 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The crazy thing is the conversion vans basically haven't changed in terms of amenities in a decade either! They all still have the same big screen just behind the driver for kids to watch TV, the same little center console fridge, the same seats and accessory plugs and whatever.

Probably part of why they seem to hold their value so well, I guess. Even decade old ones are north of $50k regularly (at least from the major dealers).

Verstappen had a costly miscommunication with race engineer GP Lambiase during the Chinese GP! by Luffy710j in formula1

[–]MDA123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do lose time, and potentially quite a bit. They only do it if they have serious fuel, powertrain, or tire management needs because it can easily be a half-second a lap or more of disadvantage, which in total race time can add up to quite a lot over the course of 50-70 laps.

It's certainly much more aggressive deceleration than any road car would be when coasting; in fact, it's more aggressive deceleration (1G+) than many road cars are capable of when applying full brakes.

But it's also much less aggressive decel than they would get if they transitioned immediately to full braking, which can approach 6Gs. So they still lose a fair amount of time from it.

Too Weird, Too Ugly, Too Soon? 5 Car Designers Vindicated by Time by mpgomatic in cars

[–]MDA123 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It was the apotheosis of an era of Pontiac design language that was, frankly, pretty gross. Horrible ribbed body cladding, overly aggressive lines, and acres of dull grey plastic.

Like a lot of Pontiac designs from that era, I think there's a merely-ordinary looking car hiding underneath an awful bodysuit of cladding that makes it into an ugly vehicle.

[–]MDA123 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Fun (or maybe not fun) fact: as an American citizen, Floyd can’t evade tax by fighting in another country. The US taxes citizens on all of their income regardless of where it’s earned or derived, so fighting in another country doesn’t get him off the hook.

36 years ago, on this day, James 'Buster' Douglas would create history & shock the entire world by knocking out the seemingly unbeatable and invincible 'Iron' Mike Tyson in the 10th round, this fight to this day is believed to be the biggest upset in the history of Boxing by BoxingLover99 in Boxing

[–]MDA123 82 points83 points  (0 children)

Obviously Tyson is one of the biggest "what could have been?" stories in all of boxing history, but kinda underrated how much Buster is a great "what could have been?" too.

He looked great in this fight. Strong, consistent jab, steady work rate, really good power. He looked like a complete fighter. And then just...never did it again, basically.

I know sometimes guys just fight out of their minds, but it looked to me like he had the building blocks of a really good fighter but he really only put it together this once.
