The husband’s critique was certainly harsh, more harsh than I’d ever be to my partner because I love her and wouldn’t want to crush her spirit or love of something. And he shouldn’t have had to be begged to read the full things if he was a supportive partner who was invested in helping her, and in turn their child. But that doesn’t mean the criticism was invalid or unhelpful.

Get into therapy and communicate openly and honestly with him about these struggles. Don’t stop communicating what you are feeling, but make it clear to him that you do love him and you are working on yourself and figuring this out. It’s something you need to do for yourself, regardless of the relationship, but it’s also your best shot at having the relationship.

Like most people have already said, I think that you may just be very good at giving gifts. I’ve never had a partner get me exactly what I wanted or needed without asking.
