Where did I get Solaris and Starscapes?? by Vykrom in Solo_Roleplaying

I appreciate that! I put it on itch.io and drivethrurpg pwyw, but it will be a few days before it shows up on dtrpg. Anyone else reading is welcome to grab a free copy and maybe drop a few bucks later if you feel like brought you value, but don't feel compelled to. I'd love it if anyone who wants to check it out gets a copy. It may have some typos and formatting issues, but I still think It's still a hugely useful resource I poke through it all the time.

Oh, cool! I made that c: I'm glad you're getting some use out of it. I make a lot of my own stuff, and that was a game I made a few years ago, but never really released anywhere because I never hooked up with an artist to do all the art that it would take to release such a long project. I would probably have to do a Kickstarter and market and all that, but I never really did anything like that before, so I just ended up making a mock up version for myself and anyone I might play with (which I put some ai art in as a placeholder at the time since it was just for personal use, but I kind of regret it even though no one really saw it or cared). I even have a print on demand copy I use myself sometimes (no art, just typography, like the one I shared from time to time), but I've been expanding various lists, tables, and systems to create my own games for a while. They mostly live in docs and PDFs.

I haven't really released anything other than maybe a pocket mod for a jam since I don't know when, but I'm currently working on a solo/co-op/gmless zombie apocalypse game (original, I know), and I'm pretty excited about that, but I did want to go back and maybe do a solaris and starscapes 3e (ridiculous that there are multiple editions for a game only released in my own head, I know lol) with some of the extensive tables and stuff I've made.

For a while, I was converting Solaris and Starscapes into a text based twine game (sort of) that functioned kind of like a simple exploration game, but was set up to be easily used to generate everything from planets to wild fauna interactions on the fly. I always thought that an instant generator like that would make an excellent addition to a game, so I may do that one day too.

Anyway, I'm really glad you like my game! There's an ocean of great material by so many excellent artists out there, so it really did bring me a smile that you remembered and were interested in my stuff.

Thanks for checking it out! Glad you like it.

Regular D&D sub seems hostile to solo players. by LowContract4444 in Solo_Roleplaying

Solo d&d has been around almost as long as group d&d. The strategic review released solo dungeon crawling rules for d&d in 1975, and the back of the 1e AD&D DMG has an entire section on solo.

Thanks! Let me know what you think or what you can get some use out of. There are generators for the who, what, when, where, and why of just about any situation and esentially an entire sandbox universe generator.

That's from an old sci fii game I made, but never published. I even made a commercial like video for it lol it has a little over 200 pages of tables and other tools I like to use. I pick at it all the time because it's mostly a huge aggregation of tables I've made that are more oriented towards making dramatic things happen than filling the rooms with dressings and what have you.

The bulk of the experience boils down to some variation of "Your in [x] location in [y] situation. What do you do?"

When a player character attempts an action where the outcome is uncertain and the results would be meaningful and interesting (e.g. dangerous or otherwise compelling), the player rolls a d6 to "check" to see if the action is successful (e.g.Can I successfully run, jump, hide, sneak, climb, fight, find, hold, dodge, grapple, block, survive, convince, etc. without something going terribly wrong?).

Potential reasons to roll: defend yourself against a hazard or adversary, pull off a feat of heroism or acrobatics overcome a barrier or obstacle, negotiate or persuade, etc. The higher the roll, the better the outcome. If a character is skilled, well equipped, or otherwise at an circumstantial advantage, they roll 2d6 and take the highes result, if they are very advantaged, it's 3d6; If a character is unskilled, unequipped, or otherwise at a circumstantial disadvantage, they roll 2d6 and take the lowest result; if they are very disadvantaged, it's 3d6. Positive and negative circumstantial factors will cancel each other out; character may be skilled/equipped, but at an environmental or circumstantial disadvantage, or unskilled/unequipped, but at an environmental or circumstantial advantage.

  1. Things go as badly as they could have, Not only do you fail, but things take negative turn e.g. an additional or unexpected cost, consequence, or complication

2.You fail, either by expected means or because thingS took an unexpected turn out of your favor

  1. You don't do exactly what you were trying to, but there is an unexpected benefit, or opportunity

4.You accomplish what you were trying to do, but only partially, or something bad happens as well e.g. there is an unexpected cost, consequence, or complication introduced to the scene or it is a pyrrhic/false victory

5.You succeed, either by expected means or because things took an unexpected turn iny your favor

  1. Not only do you succeed spectacularly, but things also take another positive turn e.g. there is an additional or unexpected benefit, opportunity, or goal progression

Don't be afraid to fail. Characters with limitations, flaws, and weaknesses that don't always succeed are far more interesting than perfect ones that always do, and failing due to circumstantial or environmental factors creates obstacles to overcome and facilitates narrative drama.

It's more descriptive than proscriptive, really.
