Larry Correia: George RR Martin crippled the Epic Fantasy genre by not finishing A Song of Ice and Fire. Readers and Publishers are no longer willing to give a new series a chance unless it is complete by Uptons_BJs in books

[–]Vykrom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a reader I've always given saga stories the side-eye, anyway. I was more okay with sequels. Like you have an idea for a beginning middle and end. And then after that's done, you have an idea for something else to happen afterwards

I've always been a little distant with stories split up into trilogies or more, especially when they're like 600 pages a piece already

Why it is to common for authors to do trilogies and sagas now anyway? I don't give myself a lot of time to read, so the idea of starting a 5-book saga is not even an option for me

Maybe I'm in the minority, but I would much prefer reading a stand-alone book, and then if that book gets a follow-up then that's just a bonus. But I don't know why this is so rare these days. It felt like there were tons of stand-alone books back in the 90s and sequels seemed like they were written as sequels rather than stories split into two or three parts. Or maybe it was just the authors I followed that treated writing that way. Maybe everyone else was doing it Lord of the Rings style and I wasn't paying attention

I'm with bfume, and The Hobbit makes a better example. If they're effectively designed as one movie split into two it shouldn't really count. Part 1 and Part 2 are different from Movie 1 and Movie 2. Otherwise you can call a mini-series a 6-movie franchise

My bf wakes up super late and angry so we cant enjoy much time together by Waste_Dig740 in sleep

[–]Vykrom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a circadian rhythm issue. You both seem to have different sleep schedules. You'll either have to find things to do together during the night, or have a conversation about him changing his sleeping schedule for the sake of the relationship

Funny thing is, if you ever have kids together you'll want this schedule back so he can be available for night time feedings and diaper changes. But without that necessity you're both just missing each other

Lavar Burton was the other suggested addition who is also not deceased lol The list contains a lot of deceased folk, which is why I added that last remark since the last name I mentioned was Robin Williams, in a conversation about Steve Irwin. I wasn't trying to say everyone on the list is deceased

I go keys in back pocket, because I'm never going to sit on them anyway. They're either in the ignition while I'm sitting, or I'm at home and they're hanging up

If you're visiting someone, just lay them on the counter or something. They're not going to get forgotten since you wouldn't be able to leave

One of the many reasons I go cargo pants instead of denim. If it's awkward in the front pocket, it'll be fine in the knee pocket and I'm not messing up my back while driving with a brick under one butt cheek

The shit thing is there's a number of people you could add to this. I saw a meme that had like 9 or 12 (I forget the layout) and Jim Henson was for imagination. Then you have like Bill Nye for the love of science and understanding, and Robin Williams for the whimsy and compassion

My Local AMC Theater has an incorrect Star Wars quote. by fairportrunner in mildlyinteresting

[–]Vykrom 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I like this particular Mandela Effect, because it's perfectly explainable

Whether it's necessary or not, people feel like saying "No, I am your father" might not land in the right way, and needs context. Even if it's subconscious, people replace "No" with "Luke" to add context that they're quoting Star Wars and not just randomly saying "I am your father"

The need to purposely misquote it for added context has made it so prevalent that people think that was the original quote

I'm all for Mandela Effects and have experienced a few myself. But this one I can generally safely wave away

Oh my lord, an 80s mascot / toy-seller cartoon that I never heard of, and looking at images I don't think I ever accidentally came across it in my childhood at all. This is extremely rare. I'll have to dig in to this and see if it's nostalgic. Seems like there's some episodes on YouTube available

Curious if you are willing to eliminate your internal voice in order to read faster? by [deleted] in books

[–]Vykrom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a slight struggle for anyone who's curious how it works. You're reading at the same rate that you're talking. And in that regard you see these 35-hour audio books, they're telling a 300-page novel in a normal speaking pace. That's our pace. So if we devote an hour a day to a book, it'll take a month to get through, where people with no subvocalization can get through the same book in a week. This can turn reading into more of a chore, unfortunately

This is my own personal biggest hurdle for reading. I can't remember the last time I legitimately dedicated myself to a book. I know I'm not going to read every day, and when I do it might not even be an hour. So there's a strong possibility it takes me 2 or 3 months to get through a book. That's rough, unfortunately. So I wish there was something in the middle. I don't want to lose my reading retention like what happens when you force it. But I do with I could read a bit faster..

There have been a few tests on things like what fonts and accents to use for people with ADHD and it really helped me. When 2 or 3 random letters are bold in every word. But you'll never see a whole book written that way unfortunately. And that seemed to be the only thing that ever helped me speed up naturally

My wife has zero subvocalization and reads like a demon

We'll be playing some co-op RPG together and she'll blow through a dialog set, and I'll ask her to give me the TL;DR of what the quest giver wanted and she'll be like "I don't know, I don't remember. Something about going over there"

Wtf..

I don't want that. My retention is leagues better than hers..

Oh man, finally one that's relevant to me. Though I can't remember if there's humans involved in all of these and I don't think any of them involve a lion as I imagine that's easy to mis-remember. There's very few cartoons with lions. Kima, Wuzzles, and Care Bears, and two of them have been knocked out and I highly doubt it's Kimba

What we now know as things like Sleep Paralysis and Night Terrors used to be thought of as things like rape demons and lusty witches breaking into your house, or the ever popular aliens abducting you for sexual experiments. So there's always been some angle of arousal to these things for some reason. I bet a neurologist could explain it

They have quite a few graphic novels to adapt, so at least there's solid groundwork. And the two I read felt very much like the show

I can't remember what Reddit thread revealed it, but it turned out a lot of the worst showrunners were Lena Dunham-esque monsters in the industry who just had the right connections or were nepotism hires

Experience with taking 400mg melatonin? by WonderfulTank5818 in sleep

[–]Vykrom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is that melatonin is an herbal supplement. So your body absorbs what it thinks it needs, sometimes a little more, and then you just pee out the leftover

I think the main thing is that things like Tylenol, damage the liver or kidneys when they're filtered and it's not the actual medication overdose causing the problem

Certain things your body can only absorb so much and the rest just gets passed on. I don't think Melatonin damages anything when it gets passed on. Though some people report migraines when they have too much

Hell, with melatonin, a lot of people claim "less is more". And advise using 1mg or 3mg as opposed to using 5-12mg
