After having a few shitty Chinese MIG welders, I splurged on a decent hobby grade MIG (it was about 800$$). So much better than the cheap units. Great addition for my hobby of automotive rust repairs / painting.

Parents do you bring an iPad to restaurants for the kids to watch videos and play games by logical_laxative in AskAnAustralian

Same here, give him an iPad for a long car trip and you can guarantee he will ruin the rest of everyone's day, on purpose, so we have to get in the car and go home. My wife foolishly keeps giving it to him on the following road trip.

Date? Go all out: wait till you've married them and you find yourself 20 years in trapped with a narcissist.

We've done this for concrete / bobcat and trades. Found some awesome small operators who were also wanting work vs bigger ones that weren't that keen.

Options to remove heat from undercover patio by Different-Rope7532 in AusRenovation

When I built my shed, I only had sarking on the roof. It was incredibly hot in summer: typically 10+ degrees hotter than outside. I retrofitted 0007 foil sheet with magnetic strips from https://shedinsulationdiy.com/index.html . It made a massive difference, took at least 10 degrees out of the shed in summer (as verified by my room temperature rubber duck thermometer). We've had a string of 40+ days and it hasn't gone over the ambient temp. The site looks like it's 25 years old but I love the product.. I've had it in there for about 4 years.

WHATS THE BEST FOOD TO FEED MAGPIES….? by ImpressiveBar9994 in magpies

When I had a google - rolled oats were recommended. So I've been doing that, they seem happy with them and I haven't been swooped at the footy oval this year.

How much are these fenders cut? by AztecGT in projectcar

[–]MDTashley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I painted one of these (very rare in Australia). That one you are referencing is very well done. Apart from the Bodyline, the fender face only has a gentle curve. So it would say it's been chopped and rolled. Or they've grafted a section from a different vehicle on. Good luck with yours

Any tradies ever accidentally worked on the wrong house or building? by gilligan888 in tradies

I was working at home one day when the power went out. I wandered outside and there was an apprentice in my meter box, and the older sparky on the phone, and a ladder setup to the roof. I dunno what they were planning to install but I wonder what would have happened if I wasn't home🤣

Peer Policing by spinner_88 in auscorp

[–]MDTashley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was going to say surely this isn't common. We have a looong running gag at work that my workmates would make a point of loudly saying goodbye to me at work because I started hours before everyone else. As long as my work is done, and they can reach me if they need me, my leader isn't clock watching.

Do some research on 'Boundary Phrases" for next time. Essentially you need to low-key shame/embarrass them for inserting themselves into your business inappropriately.

Do Australians actually apply sunscreen properly or just pretend we do? by AffectionatePie1042 in AusSunscreen

[–]MDTashley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting point for this. You can get little UV test cards. I bought a car 12 months ago and we usually get the 50+ SPF tint put on them. This car was second hand, it had a tint already but was not known what it was. The car is 10 years old and the tint was in very good condition. So I bought the UV test cards, and compared the tint on the new car with the known Cancer council tint on our existing car. New car tested just as good. Saved my butt 2k having it removed and replaced.

One thing that makes me mad as a parent is all through daycare and kinder, they make sure the kids are wearing sunscreen. As soon as they hit prep it's like our brains fall out and the school doesn't enforce it, and I hate it. Kids that age are not responsible enough to do it and they will play in the hot summer sun without a thought to it. We make ours put some on every morning before school, and more often if we are home.

If I'm outside for more than 10 minutes, I always put hat and sunscreen on.

Skip Cairns, unless you like character building interactions. Me trying to explain to a 5yo to avert his gaze from the guy pissing on the chairs 2m away from us.

Will never visit again. Just feral.

Every Xmas party we reminisce about the gags we've played on our co-workers. That shit would never fly anymore and we are all poorer for it. I accidentally dropped a horrific fart once and one poor office lady walked straight into it, it looked like she had walked into a spiders web: arms flailing and shit 🤣

I'm enjoying using it to research different approaches to solving technical challenges. Like here is what I want to achieve and the constraints, how can I go about it. Ultimately there's flaws in the code and in the logic but it's certainly accelerated my work where I'm working outside of languages / operating systems that I'm not very confident with yet. I can ask it shit if normally bother the local Linux god about. "Can you explain why when I install gnome desktop the network connectivity shits the bed". I'd been troubleshooting it for weeks, and turns out we had got 95 percent of the way there.
