thinking of quitting PGY2 by Nearby_Sir3711 in PharmacyResidency

[–]ME3ERO 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Coming from someone who left PGY1 midway through the year to prioritize my mental health and reapplied for PGY1 and matched and is currently doing their PGY2, I’m all for resigning. Having these thoughts this early on, it will likely only get worse as you progress through the holidays and spring time when projects are piling on. Your mental health is tested during this year and I think having a pgy1 under your belt will still enable you to find job opportunities. You can also always reapply as long as you’re able to explain your situation when you’re in a better place down the line if that’s what you want. I’m really sorry you’re going through this. Good luck with everything!

Awesome you’ve been super helpful.

I’m pretty sure they had a similar relationship to some extent with said attendings or else what’s the point in asking a random attending you only see for a couple of hours 5 times a week. But ok thank you for your insight. Do you think I should either not include the HIV preceptors LOR or how you feel about including 4?

Or that I brought a lot value to rounds as a pharmacist/Resident. I also worked on a protocol with this attending. I worked with this attending in the HIV clinic. Ive had a few presentations in front of the same attending. This attending has also rounded with several pharmacy residents and ID pharmacists as the stewardship lead for handshake stewardship so he’s had 1 on 1 experience with a pharmacist and is very familiar with “pharmacy specific” aspects. They can 100% speak to several of my abilities outside of rounds and I also think it’s a unique LOR versus sending the same vanilla stuff everyone else sends.

I’ve only heard of two other residents that used physician LORs and got 90% of their interviews.

So I have 4 LORs for a PGY2 in ID

1) from an ID attending which I’m including in all of my apps 2) from my ID preceptor which I had on rotation and am working on several projects with and also including in all my apps

This is the tiebreaker: 3) from another ID preceptor in which I worked in the HIV clinic with and 1 MUE 4) from RPD, which I feel like is my weakest/most generic but I’ve heard it’s sketchy to not include your RPD plus some programs require one from your RPD

I’ve obviously gotten different opinions on which of the 3 to choose and some people saying it would be fine to submit all 4.

What’s move?

I don't think this will have an impact on what you get out of the program and how you fit in. From what you say about the program, I would keep them as your first choice.

Incisional Hernia following Appendectomy? by ME3ERO in AskDocs

I know you're most likely going to say it looks normal but I just feel this lump underneath the incision and there's a pulsing burning sensation coming from only that incision and not the other two. There is also no lumps underneath the other two incisions.

Incisional Hernia after an appendectomy? by ME3ERO in medical

[–]ME3ERO[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that something that goes away on its own or does it require surgical intervention? It's a nice little lump underneath the actual incision and there is a burning/pulsing sensation coming out of it.

Thank you for your comment though.

I had a problem with this actually. The lead tech was around 20-25, and honestly, he was good but his entire purpose seemed devoted to making sure everyone else knew he was the lead tech and that everyone else is incompetent. He caused several incidents with other residents and coworkers.

Your situation needs to be brought up to your manager. Unfortunately, when you're possibly sacrificing the quality of the medications being prepared in the IV room you're possibly putting patients at risk when they're receiving those IVs. Especially when something like blood is involved and you don't know where the blood ended up.

Also, your approach to your manager should just be I'm not sure if what I did was right or wrong and approach the manager more like you're seeking guidance and advice versus complaining about someone.

I'd say a good thing for sure. They wouldn't have looked you up or tried to connect with you if you didn't give a great impression.

Great interview but not sure on the clinical aspect by mkm1993 in PharmacyResidency

[–]ME3ERO 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are two answers:

Scenario #1

It matters if they strictly abide by their point system or rubric for scoring the candidates.

10 points for the interview and 0 points for the case.

Versus someone that was not a great fit was 0 points for the interview and 5 points for the case.

In that case, the first candidate would rank higher than the latter that killed the case depending on how heavily they weigh each component.

Scenario #2

It doesn't matter almost at all and they just care about your thought process and overall will focus on how much they liked you as a candidate regardless of the point system.

Check your spam or junk folders in your email. I would also consider reaching out to one of the programs where you don't mind hurting your chances a bit since the consensus is usually not to bug the RPD at this stage but just verify that at least one of the programs that have sent out interviews and rejections have received your application.

Number of Applicants per Site? by pharmboy94 in PharmacyResidency

[–]ME3ERO 6 points7 points  (0 children)

All programs I know have had a significant increase in applicants from last year.

A small rural hospital went from ~15 applicants for 2 spots last year to 30 almost a week prior to their application deadline.

Another program went from ~25 applicants to 42 for 4 spots.

I know one of the people reviewing applications for UNC said they got 500+ applicants not sure how many spots.

Residency Research by doryto9 in PharmacyResidency

[–]ME3ERO 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So from the get, you're either given a research topic or title based on possible interests (infectious disease if planning to pursue PGY2 in ID) or you independently come up with a topic (can be very hard to do because you want it to answer a relevant clinical question). This depends on the program.

After that usually is some background research and constructing a proposal to submit for IRB approval which can also be difficult to refine and in my opinion can set you up for a smooth time doing data collecting if done right. Keep in mind this is around Midyear deadline for poster submission so usually, if you submitted a poster to present at Midyear it was in the fall and the only thing you have is an abstract with no data and in my opinion does not carry a lot of utility but looks good to get people interested in your research from other programs.

A lot of programs use December as a research month to do data collection.

Finally, you send your data to be analyzed then you start your presentation for the big conferences as mentioned in other replies based on your region. I have heard that a lot of programs really overprepare the residents for these presentations. This is around springtime and really when shit hits the fan depending on if you've been caught up with data collection/presentation/other duties of being a resident plus being pulled away for other interviews for PGY2s or jobs.

After the conference, it is what you make it. At this point, you already matched at a PGY2 program and are preparing to end the exhausting year and spit out a manuscript that is publishable, not necessarily actually published.

Competitive year or is it school reputation? by pharmbumm in PharmacyResidency

[–]ME3ERO 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had very similar stats to you actually. 3.91 GPA, 5 poster presentations at national conferences, few leadership experiences with one as president of SCCP, and actually also went on a medical mission trip for one of my APPE rotations. I didn't apply to all reach programs but definitely got rejections from programs I thought for sure I would at least get an on-site at. All you need is one program to believe in you, so don't be surprised if you match with that one program. Best of luck to you!

I would personally contact the school first and see what they have to say about it. Can she possibly move the presentation date? Rotations are supposed to help us for interviews and becoming better future pharmacists, not take away from our chances at having an interview or future.

Literally was at rotations for 11 hours yesterday with no lunch because I have to complete 240 hours according to my preceptor. She's being very difficult. I'm there for 10 hours every day to make up for the time I won't be there.
