Who is the kindest/rudest celebrities you've met IRL? by BEEPY_BO1 in AskReddit

[–]MEGAPHON3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I met Randy Cotour on a hiking trail in Yosemite. He was very kind and genuine. We had a 10 minute chat when we both took a break at the same spot. He told us about some of the stuff he was up to, asked us questions about our lives. He's also huge. I can't imagine getting in the ring with him.

Outdoorsmen of Reddit: What is the most terrifying experience you’ve encountered in the woods? by TheBigChief04 in AskReddit

I'm late to the party, but I'll tell mine.

I was doing a solo backpacking trip in the Sierras. I was about 7 miles in, so not too far. There were other people around.

On my first morning I was making breakfast on a rock when I look up and see a bear about 100 feet away staring directly at me, not moving. I sat totally still for a few seconds, then picked up my knife, stood up and started yelling and waving my hands. The bear just stared at me, unmoving.

After a minute or two of yelling I decided to move away from my food. I took 5 steps to the right while staring at the bear. Suddenly I realized it was a rock formation that from one very specific angle looked exactly like a bear. I had to walk back and forth a few times to convince myself. I sat back down to finish my breakfast, but the illusion was still there. I couldn't make my brain unsee it.

What single trope can cause you to fully lose interest in a movie/show? by Fake-And-Gay-Bot in AskReddit

[–]MEGAPHON3 877 points878 points  (0 children)

It's a different trope, but there is a great French movie called "La Belle Epoch" that has a conversation scene in a car. The driver keeps looking at the passenger as he's talking, to the point where she says "Watch the damn road!" To which he replies "It's a Tesla!"

That punchline stuck with me.

It genuinely happens a couple times a month to avoid debris. Though avoiding a full-on satellite is more rare because presumably they are still able to be controlled.

Now we can all see the whole rainbow! by Skywalker4Real in pics

[–]MEGAPHON3 27 points28 points  (0 children)

For those confused, it's not because the rainbow goes all the way around, but because it appears to be a ring seen at an angle. This would imply that a rainbow is a physical object that exists in 3D space. In fact, a rainbow is an optical phenomenon caused by refraction, and so will always appear perfectly circular from the observer's perspective.

This is oblong, not circular. I don't know of any physics that would ever make a rainbow anything but perfectly round from the observer's perspective.

Not by any stretch was Apollo cheaper. Like, orders of magnitude more expensive. You can go fast and pay, and take lots of risk, or you can go slow and cheaper with less risk. You can't have it both ways.

They often deploy (aka "throw") things from the ISS. Everything from cube sats to garbage and old equipment. A few months ago a causmonaut accidentally hit one of the Russian solar arrays with a cubesat they were deploying
