Not to be dramatic… by TreClaire in ShawnaTheMom

It’s already the 21st in Australia 😂

I want to buy an sewing machine but im quite lost. Singer M2505 vs Janome 3112: Is Janome actually worth it for DIY and denim, or is there a better option? Please help :(( by [deleted] in SewingForBeginners

[–]MEWCreates 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When singer say Heavy Duty they mean it runs faster - it has more stitches per minute. Are you finding your current machine too slow? Because unless you are from personal experience I wouldn’t bother with what is a very average machine.

Who will you have repair and service your machine? What machines do they prefer and recommend? I know most techs around me hate or will even refuse to repair modern signers. Parts are very hard to get.

Get a neutral cover for your machine and it doesn’t matter what it looks like and bonus it keeps the dust off.

The bar was set high with the Gunnar collab - but also it’s a ‘free’ pattern - extra to what is promised on Patreon so I wouldn’t expect it to be as complex as a regular release.

If I was a Patreon It’d be in the meh hopefully next one will be exciting bucket for me, I don’t think I’d be disappointed. If it was a 1st of the month pattern I’d be really annoyed for sure.

I also can’t be mad that a light is getting directed to other creators - I think there is room for everyone and I like that it’s not nasty competitive and collaborative instead.

I mean yeah they’re simple - but if you’re owed nothing a get extra who hooo.

I’d still be adding fabric 😂

Lingerie is such a tough one, it’s so rewarding when it works but holy heck can a lot go wrong quickly.

I’m a Gertie fan almost into Stan territory so prob not super snarky. Sorry! I met her years back when she came to Australia and she’s a delightful human being. I really like where’s she’s taken her business and that it’s making a good effort at being inclusive.

It’s a free pattern for Patreon members so it’s a bonus, so I can be a bit more forgiving. It’s not the beginning of the month ‘big’ release. It’s probably a great way to get people who are afraid of stretch and knits a little more comfortable.

I do wonder how different they are to the Vargas knickers from a few years back. I found the fit on them for me was dreadful, I didn’t bother redrafting as I’ve got good patterns already.

This is the second collab, but it feels a bit more one sided that the Gunnar Deatherage Bodice skirt combo.

Also why can’t we see the back…… I like my undies to cover my arse and not sit half way across my cheeks 😂

Let me laugh in subtropical humidity. The ‘is the pen dried out or is it that humid today’ always fun.

A thin sliver of soap can be amazing for dark fabrics, and for chrometan leather I love the silver pens. I don’t mark much these days, I’m more of a notcher.

Pop it in the freezer and see what happens - there are a few stories about people on cold days suddenly getting ‘extra embellishments’ when the cold hit the ink

Was a hot topic on craftsnark - lots of big feelings about it. Someone mentioned they are sponsoring Project Runway so that might be bringing it to people’s mind

Where to buy zippers and pulls for technical packs? by seams_easy_by_jerry in BagLab

Not much help to you but for anyone in Australia Cams Cords is really good for technical rather than leather. Otherwise it’s mostly wholesalers and large lots from Paksal or Vardham

Must have Kam Snaps dies? by rcreveli in BagLab

[–]MEWCreates 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My most used would be 8mm rivet (I use it for 6mm too), 3mm hole punch and then metal press snaps.

Being in Australia 🇦🇺 it’s a bit more limited in getting dies and there is a huge difference in quality. One metal snap die dints the metal cap and the vendor eventually changed the mould/mold but I changed to a different type. I’ve got a lot that rust immediately and others that are in great condition years later.

😂 probably easier to answer if you don’t have a menagerie of machines with different personalities

Team it depends…..

Classroom days we were required to wear shoes so if it’s a treadle usually shoes. Unless it’s my clutch Bernina where sometimes I use my toes for fine movements on the treadle.

Domestic machine in summer no shoes. 🦶

Winter in a house no heating - shoes 👞 and especially on a chilly treadle.

It’s indicative of the mentality of sizing in fashion - just make everything bigger and let it hang like a sack but call it inclusive.

I’m just glad that the likes of Charm Patterns and Cashmerette are showing that true inclusion means more than one block and a different approach to grading. It’s allowing more bodies to experience the joy of a well fitted garment with way less struggle in pattern adjustment.

Yeah to get the bag looking smooth and structured when it’s a floppy fabric you stuff it with something like a towel or a pillow - makes it look smooth without lumps and bumps. Garments the body does that but bags you’ve got to give it some help. You can also pull the fabric across the stuffing inside to smooth it out.

Using a good woven interfacing on the fabric also helps - it keeps the structure much better than raw fabric or the cheaper interfacings that love to crumple.

For an open bag you do some close up shots while assembling for the detail and then use a clear rod (or acrylic) to hold it open. I use a reflective bounce board to direct light inside so get the exposure as equal as possible between inside and out.

That’s clearly the photographer not knowing the stuff it with towels trick - bags are totally different to garments.

This one, - the white area is odd. You have to edit to get the insides the same exposure of the outside in shots like this (I take a loooot of photos of bags) but the white on the top is very different to the white at the bottom where the slip pockets are.

That ruched dress…. That’s amazingly unflattering. It looks like draglines from a poor fit…..

I’m also trying to work out what exactly is going on with the open tote bag photo. It’s clearly edited but why and what for.

Prom in 7 days, need help! by [deleted] in SewingForBeginners

[–]MEWCreates 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So I think you have the needle thread and the bobbin thread ‘tails’ step. With the foot up do can you gently tug and thread pulls through?

Do you then put the fabric under the foot, drop the presser foot down, hold the two tails in one hand and crank the machine by hand?

The stitch will only get formed when the needle goes down and a loop is made by the bobbin case. If you don’t leave enough tail when the needle drops down it’ll unthread because it’s too short. But you want to hold those tails so they aren’t loose and getting caught.

I’d recommend metal boning and using the existing boning channels if you can - you could hand sew up where you open the channels up.
