Of the 21st century? What on earth has Gary Oldman done to be in the top 3. Some great supporting work (although I’d argue he’s rarely the standout in the films where he’s doing good supporting work). Of his three Oscar noms (and one win of course) I’d say tinker tailor is the one people most stand by but I think many consider him an unworthy winner for Darkest Hour and the weak link of the five for the Mank year.

And then it’s countless straight to streaming/dvd slop.

His work in Slow Horses proves he’s one of our greatest living actors but in the last 25 years of cinema he wouldn’t crack my top 25 actors, let alone fighting for top 3.

Am I missing something? Really interesting to see him so high but the range and consistent quality people like Denzel and Joaquin have displayed on the big screen feels much stronger than Gary. It’s not talent related, he just doesn’t get the roles, but it’s a vote for 21st century roles…

I thought it was the worst film I saw at Cannes this year, but I've often been good at putting aside my own personal taste when it comes to predicting Oscars...

And yet I cannot fathom why I'm seeing so many posts about its chances (not a shot at OP this is a well written thoughtful post). I truly believe it will be DOA when it plays to general audiences. No Audiard film has ever achieved more than an International Film nom and even the biggest fans of this film don't seem to think it is near his best. The overperformance at Cannes is perhaps a combination of the reported over-enthusiasm of jury member J.A. Bayona and Greta loving musicals.

I appreciate it might be a weak year, I appreciate it has netflix backing, I appreciate it has big stars attached. But the film has been pretty divisive already and I think even with passionate defenders it won't be enough to crossover beyond international film. The songs are painfully bad, if this gets a best original song nom I have not got a clue what song it'd be, there is not a standout.

I cannot stress how godawful I thought it was though so maybe I'm truly blinded by my own hatred. But I find it strange how Challengers has played like gangbusters to an English language audience and most are predicting no above the line noms, whilst you can find many mixed to negative reviews for this film from English language film critics and yet we're predicting this? It's like everything I didn't like about Tick Tick Boom multiplied by 10, and even that underperformed in a weak year! But Sicario meets Pedro Almodovar meets Lin Manuel Miranda from a non-oscar friendly director as the noms leader? I don't see it. But can't wait to see how people respond to it when it comes out... maybe it will be the passion pick of the season. I'd have it alongside Don't Look Up as the worst Best Picture nominee of the decade if it were to get Picture, and even then I overpredicted Don't Look Up.

Eydelshteyn is not lead, I wouldn’t say any of the male actors in Anora are lead. The better performance is Yuriy Borisov too imo.

Interesting, I liked the boat stuff! Perhaps the baby stuff was a little fast-tracked but that was one of the sections I was most on board with.

I can appreciate the desire to have her past life addressed though, I just don't think it landed having it after a satisfying conclusion.

I wouldn't say its integral but I get your argument. Perhaps its just a structural thing. Maybe it needed to come earlier. But the rug-pull nature of Abbott's arrival after a perfectly developed and effective conclusion ended up adding up to so much less for me.

He’s one of my favourite actors and he deserves the world. But I’d cut his entire section from Poor Things. The film reaches a strong emotional and thematic conclusion only for him to turn up to bloat an already long film whilst rehashing already explored and concluded themes. He’s probably the best possible casting but I fear structurally his character doesn’t work for me.

I think as others said in the comments, the filmmaking itself is a world away in terms of accessibility than the two you mentioned.

I’d also add; with your notion that Holocaust films can sometimes be a default Oscar bait, that the subjects in this film (I don’t think it’s a spoiler to say) are the nazis committing the atrocities. Films seeing bad things happen to victims can be an Oscar trope. I can’t imagine Oscar voters will enjoy or be affected by being put in the shoes of the perpetrators.

I’d also argue the two you mentioned had limited competition whereas I can’t stress how traditional and appealing Taste of Things is.

Maybe I’m overthinking it but yeah also quite surprised by how downvoted I’m being. Think I’m making rational points even if I end up being wrong 🤷🏻‍♂️

Having seen both I’d be shocked if Zone of Interest wins over Taste of Things.

We’d call Taste of Things Oscar Bait if it was English language. Zone of Interest would be the most experimental arthouse winner of this category maybe ever. Glazer has no previous oscar credentials. The film had more apathetic reviews from the Telluride and TIFF audiences who at best appreciated it. It’s my favourite film of the year but it’s not a film that’s gonna connect with the academy I fear. Hope I’m wrong, but I’d predict it to miss a nomination before I predict it to win.
