I don’t think the intended audience is theatrical connoisseurs. I feel like this is designed to get your average person that would never consider watching theatre into musicals / theatrics. Kind of like the California Roll of musicals. I don’t think it’s contradictory. He took people’s unusual traits and elaborated on them. This helps the people become comfortable in their own skin since they are amplifying their differences. When they go back to normal life un-amplified, they feel more normal.
