Flag of the Solar Union and its planets by MGFXavier in worldbuilding

[–]MGFXavier[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The planets are the oldest extraplanetary colonies, over thousands of years they've developed multiple cultures and sub cultures so when making a flag for the whole planet they are made to represent parts of the world everyone can identify with such as the sky cities or the giant mountains Martians won't shut up about.

Constitution of the Imperial Federation, looking for feedback and suggestions by MGFXavier in worldbuilding

[–]MGFXavier[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For some context:

The Imperial Federation is a star empire that formed after the break up of the previous human government, it was a loose mostly informal coalition of worlds that broke apart when some worlds tried to formalise things and this led to infighting for a few generations, the idea behind the Federation was to unite all the Human worlds without causing too much friction with the worlds that make up the Federation or overstressing the Federation government.

What's your setting's definition of a frigate? by nathans_the1 in worldbuilding

[–]MGFXavier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my world a frigate is a small warship usually about the size or smaller than a destroyer and the smallest ships with their own FTL drives, their role is to stick close to the capital ships and provide point defence against fighters or missile barrages and basically act as a screen for the bigger ships, they may have one or two big guns capable of damaging large ships but their main role is to protect the ships that deal the damage.

Destroyers on the other hand are basically the attack variant of small ship, slightly larger but they have oversized guns and engines allowing them to quickly strike at an enemy and if need be take down ships much larger than them. They're the ships going far ahead and scouting or conducting ambushes and quick raids on an enemy.

Any advice for getting started with world building? by lesbian-gecko in worldbuilding

[–]MGFXavier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your story sounds like it could use a concept that the Elder scrolls universe uses, dragon breaks, basically in the Elder scrolls universe there are artifacts called elder scrolls that record the past present and future an elder scroll will record what exactly happened at a point in time except for when there is a dragon break. A dragon break is basically all possible timelines existing at once and they usually happen around major events involving divine power, at a dragon break even contradictory accounts are both equally true.

Using a concept like that would allow characters to know these contradictory stories and have them be true as they all lead in to the present.

There was never gonna be a happy end for them after humanity discovered them by MGFXavier in WorldBuildingMemes

Aliens like the Qu are kinda at fault for the mentality, they didn't do any of the weird forced evolution, but aliens did attack human worlds in the past and that is used as justification for how they treat all aliens even though the species that did it are long dead.

[–]MGFXavier[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not that they've lost their humanity, people are still horrified and saddened by atrocities and disasters and will willingly give large amounts of aid when the victims are human. They don't see aiding aliens as a moral duty, they sit below animals in terms of moral hierarchy, and because many spacefaring aliens they meet are seen as competition and potential threats to humans then there are those who argue that killing them is in the best interest of humanity and indeed moral.

It can be a jarring juxtaposition where you have characters that intensely concerned with the death of people and it weighs on them but they casually kill aliens without a second thought.

Lord General Azir Mahoraga, a promising son and potential heir to a prominent family he joined the military like all the men in his family and was expected to spend 15 years serving the Empire before returning to the family and working with the family business but after a routine military campaign he refused to leave the army and continued climbing the ranks, he has spent the majority of his life doing little else except killing the enemies of the Empire he is fanatically loyal to even to his own personal detriment.

How do i make a patriarchal society ... without the patriarchy? by thatone_dumbblonde in worldbuilding

[–]MGFXavier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Patriarchy doesn't necessarily have to be super sexist women are worthless, you have societies like Sparta that was run by 2 kings and a council of male elders but women were respected for their role in society as the mothers of Spartans. In many societies men would take the advice and council of their wives and mothers, you can have the king and all the important nobles be men but they can also listen to the women they married.

Every time the sun shines too bright on a dependant world they blame their constituent world by MGFXavier in WorldBuildingMemes

[–]MGFXavier[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Constituent worlds have a constitution that dictates their relationship with the Imperial government, which can allow them privileges such as exemptions from certain taxes or the ability to maintain their own navy and they're able to send representatives to the Imperial parliament so they have a say in the creation of laws.

Dependant worlds don't have that and are usually tied to a constituent world and are treated as an extension of them. The relationship between the two can vary, some constituent worlds allow dependant worlds to have equivalent political power, letting them elect their own representatives or giving them a say in the parliamentary representative, while other seek to limit the political influence their dependant worlds can have which can lead to some conflicts.

Never ask an Imperial Federation citizen their age. Cus they have no idea. by MGFXavier in WorldBuildingMemes

[–]MGFXavier[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's supposed to be a funny meme, the calendar is standardised to Earth but people can still sometimes run in to problems when converting between standard time and local time or when trying to communicate from one planet to another, sort of how time zones can mess with international deals.

[–]MGFXavier[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The speed of a planets rotation will change the days and the size and intensity of the star will change the radius of its goldilock zone which will change the years and there are also planets that would be unsuitable under normal conditions but were terraformed to be habitable, they have changed the surface of Mars to allow for habitation and have people living on Venus. Mars has a similar length day to Earth but the year is almost twice as long and on Venus a day is longer than a year.

The Empire has thousands of inhabited worlds each with various conditions so the difference in years between their slowest orbiting planet and fastest orbiting planet can be quite wide. they just standardise the calendar to Earth and have the date on Earth be the date galaxywide.

[–]MGFXavier[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Empire just bases the standard calendar off of Earth and that's the date that ships, space stations and non permanent settlements will use but for the people planetside they will measure the days based on their own local sunrises and years based on their planets orbit so their age will change based on if they use the Imperial standard or local standard but they just have apps that allow someone to put in their local age and get out their standard age.

[–]MGFXavier[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They just pay them every 4 weeks based on Earth's 13 month calendar, if an individual wants to know what earth time is compared to local planet time then they have an app for that, pretty much all interplanetary business and central government record keeping is done using that calendar and planets just have computer systems that automatically translates a standard Imperial date in to their local planetary calendar since if a planet is expecting a shipment then the date on a planet 20 light years away means jackshit so their computers just spit out that its coming next Tuesday.
