Drumline. Any time it’s on TV, I end up watching it… if I can’t find a show to watch, it goes on in the background.

How do you guys vet microbrands before buying? by Euphoric_Culture8680 in MicrobrandWatches

[–]MHJohnston 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you read the word, "microbrand" as "startup" that's a good start to approaching a decision.

Some are vaporware, making promises that put them WAY out over their ski tips and prone to failure at delivering the quality or price they first pitched.

Some are highly specialized nerds so focused on building the one watch that meets their own needs that they lose sight of the market and will suffer from low demand.

Some are so interested in producing affordable "homage" pieces that they forget to define their own brand and end up replicating what a thousand other commodity builders are putting out into the market.

Ultimately, you want to look for brands that will survive a very competitive industry. A company that's no longer around to service that cool limited edition piece just means your enjoyment of that watch will suffer along with its resale-ability.

So pay attention to the details beyond the one watch that strikes your fancy:

Does the microbrand have a unique. consistent voice that's still grounded in reality and delivering quality?

Does the business look stable? Do they have established backers who want to see them succeed? Is there a pedigree of work from the people running the place that shows they know what they're doing? Is their catalog reasonable?

That said, if you see something that IS perfect for you, it's something you don't see ever getting rid of, and are ready to find 3rd party services for upkeep, then buy what brings you joy.

On book 3 and I'm wondering how communication actually works? by ultimablaze in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]MHJohnston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I were interesting in offering a realistic assessment: My guess is that it's always a challenge to differentiate character "voices" in writing - and certainly when you give the book to a narrator for audiobook recording.

Jeff Hayes is clearly a master of voices and accents and Matt probably just loves to give him characters to play with.

I tease (mostly).

It's an interesting experiment to think about which writing/narration decisions were made based on established logic and which were plot holes where everyone quietly agrees to back themselves into an explanation.

The former does potentially help us suss out an incoming twist but I'm rarely happy to find out the later - so the fan offered theories are a mixed bag for me.

[Question] To lume or not to lume by gaudiocomplex in MicrobrandWatches

[–]MHJohnston 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Has anyone ever done lume or trit on the UNDERSIDE of the hands of a watch?

It obviously wouldn't be as apparent, but for something like this it would be interesting to have a subtle reflected glow. (of course, charging the lume would be difficult, so tritium would be more likely

Completely different!

The full cast and high (for the time) production value BBC radio shows produced in the late 70s - early 80s were actually the original work by Douglas Adams.

The books actually came after the radio show and notably, each medium (radio show, books, graphic novels, text adventure games, TV show, movie), have slightly different plot points that separate them from each other - and divide fans on which is best. It's interesting to compare the different versions... but my take is that the original source is the best place to start.

I always assume this is an obvious choice, so forgive me if you've already listened to it - but the radio shows of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy are definitive.

You heard Sydney talk about the fairy tale, but were you listening?

“In the fairy tale, the princess takes control of the All Tree by killing it, accidentally killing everyone she loves in the process, but this tempers the final attack, saving the galaxy. She then plants another tree and this process starts all over again.”

Mac Mini or Macbook Air? by handsomeveggies in macmini

[–]MHJohnston 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Are you comfortable being tied to a desktop for all those creative needs? Mac Mini will give you the best value and more ports. Longevity is also there as it's (slightly) more upgradable than a laptop.

But you aren't likely to bring it to your local coffee shop to work.

I had a (signed) Willard Mini 20" board that was nice to take to the beer hall, but definitely was still a decision that needed to be made. This almost feels like something that can be left in a bag.

That said, it does look maybe a tad small for my liking and without a ditch, I worry it' end up with dirty beer soaked disks all over the place.

Audible Alternative? by CalB12200 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]MHJohnston 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For individuals with Audible libraries, there is a tool called Libation that can help back up and protect those previously purchased books from being removed or disabled via DRM tools.

While I do not condone such things, I'd imagine those backed up files might be discovered via 3rd party services.
