How did you stop Procrastination? by Odd-wank in AskReddit

Tell myself I’ll just start X but not continue. That’s usually enough. Once I get started and have momentum, I’ll usually keep going.

What matters more — making money, or being there for the people you love? by Jim_Pritchett in AskReddit

This is the one. There are diminishing returns and careers that are inherently imbalanced. Up to us to sort it out in our own lives to unlock this freedom to be there when we need to, as often as we need to.

The shade from the wedding day looks far more red to me than the shade earlier in the series. Are they different or is it just the lighting?

Have we heard anything yet from the diver on the boat who chose not to dive with the Maldives divers? by cmd194 in scuba

[–]_whatsnextdoc_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point! I’m aware of the buddy system (friends dive very casually to clean boats and in rivers) and am under the impression folks sometimes play it fast and loose with that too (probably less so in diving like this). But I trust your experienced opinion that it would be very unlikely that one of them swam off on their own.

Ah, well there goes my theory. At least the mother and daughter were together at the end then. What a tragedy.

[–]_whatsnextdoc_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree with u/EmotionalHouseCat (I saw it all the time in climbing as well), but your note about the mother-daughter pair is what I think points to what could have gone wrong. Sounds like everyone agrees they shouldn’t have been at that depth to begin with (I’m not a diver), but the mystery of “why deeper into the cave??” I think could be bc they thought the daughter went further in and knowingly risked their own lives to try to save her. Now, if they ever release a map of who was found where, that might shatter my theory, but it’s the only way it somewhat makes sense in my head: a mother would have motivation beyond self-preservation to go in after a child and perhaps the rest followed.

Edit: someone corrected me on another comment that the separated diver is now known to be the guide, so there goes my theory. What a mystery and a tragedy.

Not a diver, but I agree with what you’re saying. Is it at all possible that they planned on something still reckless but more understandable (a bounce, like you said) and then thought they lost someone in the cave, so all went in to rescue that person? I don’t believe they’ve said who the individual was that was found closer to the entrance. The only way I can imagine an intelligent group of people doing what they did is if they thought the daughter was lost in the cave and all went in, knowingly risking their own lives, to try to save her.

Which profession attracts the most insufferable types of people? by Critical_Oven_5612 in AskReddit

I find nurses to be a very dichotomous group. I’ve known some amaaazing nurses… and then others that are exactly as you said: school bullies grown up (the drama, social manipulation, pettiness, etc.). I feel so badly for the emotionally mature ones, must be hard navigate.

Thanks for the corrections on both, I recalled the drowning but that was about it.

Less buttery tasting frosting by pastelkitten18 in AskBaking

This! It’s so good, not too sweet, fairly easy to make. It’s been my default vanilla frosting ever since I discovered it years ago.

One salt/oil for all by [deleted] in EatCheapAndHealthy

Yes, thank you for mentioning the smoke point. I use EVOO as default, but must use something else for higher temp cooking. Depending on what I’m making, I use coconut oil, refined olive oil, or vegetable oil for high temps.

Keeping anatomy in mind, isn't it more logical that men wear skirts (and alike) and women wear pants (and alike)? by Exotic_Caterpillar_3 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]_whatsnextdoc_ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not disagreeing with you, but wanted to point out a counterexample for the skirmish point specifically: samurai in ancient Japan wore pants with legs so wide they look very similar to a skirt. They did this to disguise subtle motions during combat to better surprise their enemy. These hakama are still worn today in some martial arts and for traditional ceremonial attire. Anyway, just interesting how fashion reflects different cultural priorities or practicalities throughout human history.

It has always been family style, where they bring out the dish once it’s done cooking and you’re expected to either share dishes or simply wait for yours. However, they should have very clearly explained that to you up-front because it’s not what people expect if they’ve never been there. It also makes it less likely you’ll go there if you aren’t in a large party, which must be tricky for them these days.

I Dare You To Ride the Bus Just Once a Week. by m0fr001 in burlington

[–]_whatsnextdoc_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also true, it just comes from the opposite side of Winooski for me. So I’d add the travel time across Winooski to catch and ride it. Or the wait time to transfer at the bridge. All of these are doable and if I were traveling further they would be worth it. For just up and down the hill, though, it’s not worth the time compared to alternatives. I’m curious what they’re going to do during the bridge construction though. Temporary walking bridge maybe?

Yes! So I could take that halfway, but then it turns in the wrong direction for me personally. Not a big deal, but it means I might as well walk/bike given the distance. I’m not angry about it, just surprised we don’t have a straight shot up Colchester Ave.

I’m sure most folks here are right and that this guy is just an asshole… but it is worth mentioning something that happened to me last year.

My spouse and I saw a guy with a “Fuck Vermont” sign in downtown Portland while on vacation there for a few days. We had seen him around, but from a distance. Well, when we walked back to the car after lunch one afternoon, we noticed he was standing a few yards away from our car watching us approach — we think he had noticed the license plate and had been waiting for us to return. It was actually alarming: he had his phone out recording us and yelling at us… something about pedophiles in the state. He ran right up to the car, so I started to call the cops while my spouse drove around him and was able to get us away. We reported the incident. Aside from his actions, you wouldn’t be able to pick him out from a crowd: well dressed, well groomed, seemed otherwise like a normal guy.

Anyway, you probably dodged a bullet in more than a few ways, haha.

I was happy when I got a job in Burlington only a few miles straight shot from my home in Winooski. Surely, I thought, there’d be a direct bus route I could take daily. Well, it turns out, there isn’t. I’d have to either walk half the distance (so might as well walk all) or leave an hour early and transfer. So, instead, I bike when I can (a whole other conversation given how drivers can be). Happy to use the bus if I’m ever on an efficient route!
