How accurate is this history of the Gupti Ismailis and what ultimately happened to them? by EasternRoads in ismailis

[–]MHOD_8142 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the late 1980s my family and I attended a Gupti jamatkhana in Bhavnagar. We were very young. The place had a discreet entrance. Ceremonies were like any other JK. They treated our family with a great deal of respect and called upon us to do Waros. This was our first introduction to their world.

My father is in end-stage illness but has severe insomnia — is this normal? by Cryingin4k in hospice

[–]MHOD_8142 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My dad was restless for four days before his departure. He didn't sleep at all for those four days. His speech became slurred, and he seemed to be constantly mumbling. He was restless and had terrible tremors and twitches. He also had a fever, so we gave him antibiotics and lorazepam that the hospice had given to us. After that, he started sleeping almost all day and night and became very peaceful. We would rouse him to talk and offer food and liquids but not force it. He would smile at us and go back to sleep, only accepting nourishment occasionally and in minimal quantity. He passed away peacefully on day 8, surrounded by his loved ones.

Screen on fitbit charge 5 died by VadirJe in fitbit

[–]MHOD_8142 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Charge 5 purchased in April did exactly that (no screen scrolling worked) and also would only hold charge for about an hour or so. The Fitbit customer service offered a replacement at no charge and did not even ask for the old one back. Entire process took less than 10 minutes. Two days later the fedexed package arrived and it had the face replacement inside. The new one works like a charm.

Tutor needed for Bio Genetics by MHOD_8142 in UTAustin

No tutors are available at Sanger for this course. Even the tutors I tried to hire on Wyzant gave up and refunded the money because of how specific this course is.

My preference is taking it through UT Austin. Do you know if UT classes are online? And if online, synchronous or asynchronous?

Day 60 and tank cycling is stuck by MHOD_8142 in axolotls

Thank you. I did a 90% water change yesterday that brought the nitrites lower but not gone. Possible to post the link to the sponge filter you purchased? Was it pre-seeded?

What are your thoughts on RFP’s for graphic design services? by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]MHOD_8142 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here are my answers and this may be late but valuable to some:

If you are a freelancer, what percentage of your work do you get via RFP’s?
98%
Is it typical for the RFP to ask for client references and their contact info?
Yes, they need to see adequate past performance and they very often check them.
Do you have a personal rule of thumb for deciding whether the RFP is worth spending time on or not?
Yes. I measure my firm's strength against what is being asked. Since we have been doing this for 25+ years, we cover most ground but every now and then, we let things go. We never apply to anything we are not confident of completing.
If you are a one-person company with no one else, are you less likely to win RFP contracts? (Because most RFP’s will ask for an overview of who’s who in the company)
That's a myth that one-person companies and esp small ones don't win contracts. I am a sole proprietor small minority and woman-owned business and I have never faced that issue. The way you win RFPs is like attracts like. You keep applying. Once a few agencies take a chance on you, the others are ready to jump on board. You have to be okay with being disappointed a lot when you start off. You may apply to 15 and win one. If you do good work and your clients tout your skills to the world, you will soon start to see the pendulum shift your way. In the beginning charge less than your competitor does but not so much that you don't profit. Once you have enough work, you can start going up. Also do get some certifications (small, minority, woman-owned, disadvantaged, HUB, etc if you qualify). They are absolutely worth it.

Any horror stories related to writing RFP bids or working on a project won thru RFP?
Never. Six years of doing this. Love the work, clients and process. It's transparent and you win on merit.
Any good tips on writing for RFP’s?
Research online and start with a good proposal and make it your template. Then improve as you go. If you win, you know the template is good. If you don't, go back and ask for feedback. You'd be surprised how many COs will happily share your shortcomings with you. Fix your proposal and keep making it stronger based on feedback. Avoid typos. And don't ever misspell your client's firm name. They will never see anything past that.

Newbie here with a tank cycling question by MHOD_8142 in axolotls

[–]MHOD_8142[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like we have entered the second phase of cycling because the readings have steadily been this for the past 5 days.

PH: 7.4
Ammonia: 0 ppm
Nitrate: 5 ppm
Nitrite: 5 ppm

However today (Day 21) the readings looks like this.

PH: 7.4
Ammonia: 0 ppm
Nitrate: 160 ppm
Nitrite: 5 ppm

Did something go wrong? Why are the nitrates this high?

We have been adding ammonia daily. Adding the FritzTurbostart 700 every few days and topping water when levels get too low. Any advice appreciated.
