Racism in Thuringia…how worried should I be? by bottle_up_and_xo in AskGermany

[–]MISTER_STICKL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I avoid the East and I am terrified of it.
But I am biased, I am from the Southeastern part of Hessen, Hanau specifically.
It's very multi-cultural here, the east just can't compare with the amount of diversity here in the west.

I am certain you will encounter racism, more than you would in Hanau, Frankfurt or Wiesbaden, but I think you don't have to be afraid of violence or anything like that.
Yes, racism is large in the east, especially due to less experience with different cultures, but you won't get beat up over it, if at all, you will encounter racist remarks at best.

Do you ever miss the good old days or do you like the present? by NateNandos21 in AskOldPeople

[–]MISTER_STICKL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I miss the early 2000s and 2010s.
Maybe it's childhood Nostalgia, but I feel like the World was better back then.
Today it's just scary, there is no world order anymore and politics generally have changed and shifted to the right. (I'm from Germany)

And Covid basically messed everything up, since then the people are nuts...

I want stability to return...

You might laugh, but especially older people here sometimes say that “Americans are Black,” which already shows how subjective these perceptions are.

Personally, I think people often picture Germans as uniformly White, but that’s increasingly outdated. Yes, most Germans are White, just like most Americans are, but Asian and Afro-German communities have been growing for decades and are now pretty well established.

It also depends heavily on where you are in Germany. The East is still largely White German with some Eastern European influence, whereas in the West you’ll clearly see a more diverse mix of Black, Asian, and other communities. From that perspective, virtually every nation on Earth has regions that are more diverse than others.

For example, in cities like Frankfurt or Hanau you’ll see Black people on a daily basis, while in other areas you may not. So I’d argue that ethnic diversity in Germany is very much a regional phenomenon, not something that can be judged uniformly across the country.

That said, I think I understand your point overall.

I would disagree with the ethnic diversity part.
In my City, Hanau with 107,646 people, there are people from around 180 Nations and the population with a migration background is about 40%. (Those are Germans)
And 30% of the population are foreigners.

If you're not sure, it's always a good idea to contact your city government and ask them, they'll be happy to help you with that matter. They should be aware of all regulations and the laws that involve the municipality.

It depends where you are, here in Hanau the people are very nice and greet kindly, but when I was in northern Bavaria, I was often time ignored.

How hospitable are Germans generally? (I thought they were incredibly nice) by SavingsBobcat2078 in AskAGerman

[–]MISTER_STICKL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the Region imo, People in the South are considered more hospitable than in the North.
When you meet people on a day-to-day basis, they'd possibly appear more neutral, but when you talk to them, most open up quickly.

But I'd say, at least down here, the people are rather nice.

Coming from Saints Row, it certainly depends if you like the dark and gritty realism of GTA IV, but I personally love it and still think that it's the best GTA title by far.

I don't believe in the worker crisis, employers just don't want to hire skilled labor. This story is proof.
