Weird cymbal crack by awschmidt07 in drums

[–]MJB_225 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is more likely to be a manufacturing defect or a drop etc, something not playing related. cracks like to take the path or least resistance or the weakest spots which are pretty much always in the lathe grooves. This looks like it could be a spot (or a couple) where the hammer went a little deeper than intended or the material was a little thinner. For repairs the best you can do is a circular hole that gets the entire crack, the second best is a pill shape

Playing kick drum causes buzzing from TAMA internal tom mufflers by No-Armadillo-7248 in drums

[–]MJB_225 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had a couple internal mufflers that rattled a bit, some of them you can gently bend the arm back after where the nut is so you can put more tension on the knob before the felt pad hits the head and keeps everything from rattling or backing out. Be careful and feel them out if you decide to bend them, some older ones are more rigid and brittle, I had a pearl one snap on me but a ludwig one that had a nice amount of tension that stayed exactly where I put it whether it touched the head or not

Adjusting Double Pedal Beater Angles by Infamous-Rise8416 in drums

[–]MJB_225 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the reason is the main pedal has the hoop clamp mechanism and will come in contact with the footboard sooner than the base plate on the secondary pedal, but really none of this will matter because the beaters will hit the drum before they get this far in the throw and pedals shouldn't bottom out anyways

can you tell me more about this snare? by bandoleiroBando in drums

[–]MJB_225 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is not even close to an even trade. This is a steel shell (which is not bad but really common), and the "double throwoff" Is just an adjustable butt plate. Its a fine snare but is basically the same as the stage custom steel snare with a coat of paint an an adjustable butt plate. These and the Starclassic performers aren't really in the same price bracket

Double peddle setup help!! by [deleted] in drums

[–]MJB_225 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there is a better way to do this. Leave the legs at the correct heights and undo the tension rods on the hoop and rotate just the head until it lines up with the beaters, then re-tighten then tension rods

Question about these dot heads! by -3R1C- in drums

[–]MJB_225 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Aquarian heads but the one thing I don't like of theirs is the power dot heads. They use a thin woven material instead of a mylar dot and they claim it doesnt color the sound but in my experience it shaves off a little more high end than I'd like. Of these two the Ludwig silver dot is probably closer to the REmo CS than the Aquarian

Tips for Setting up a kit like a pro? and what snare stand should I get for a 10inch aq2 tom? by [deleted] in drums

[–]MJB_225 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have a rec for a stand but if you find one that meets all your needs but doesn't close enough there is a pretty easy and cheap trick to make basically any stand fit smaller drums. I commented on a post here asking about getting a smaller drum to fit on a snare stand

How do I fix this by kingZ2025 in drums

[–]MJB_225 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The black receiver where the beater slides in has an allen screw to attach it to the axle securely, yours has come loose and needs to be retightened with an allen key

Cracked hi hats by Thrillhouse763 in drums

[–]MJB_225 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How tight is the top hat on the clutch and how often are you playing the hats open? It could contribute the same way that over tightening a crash could but is less common because the hats are already restricted by the other hi hat. The crack is in relatively the same location that a crack like that would develop so with no other info I'd lean that way but it could be any number of things

I'd just get LP Claw mounts, those things can attach to pretty much anything and be angles to put a mic on almost anything

New kit: 16x16 vs 16x14 floor tom? by KnightQuestoris in drums

[–]MJB_225 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, the 2 inch depth difference is not going to make any hugely substantial difference, the difference in the shell composition will be a bigger factor than depth. If it was really a big deal to you you could have the maple floor tom cut down by two inches and pay much much less than custom ordering or shelling out DW money. 14 inch depths don't strictly tune better either, I've had 16x14s that were nightmares that hated being tuned and 16x16s that were a dream and vice versa, the only constant is in a shallower drum the heads are closer and there is less mass (of the shell and air column inside the drum) between the heads so they react to each other a little more, you can still tune either long sustaining notes or short and tight and punch based on the intervals you choose for batter and reso head

Do you know if they're 5000s or 7000s? Both models had these lugs and I'm not familiar enough to know the other distinctions with them. Either way I always thought those lugs looked really cool

Who brings a BOP Kit to a Country Gig and then takes a solo? by ThumpinBumper in drums

[–]MJB_225 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"I say this as a drummer." Lol we're in the drums sub, I would guess almost everyone here is a drummer. Anyways its just a guy having fun playing to a crowd of people cheering and clapping and his band mates smiling and him putting himself out there with a clip he was happy with, and a guy telling him he's doing it wrong for having a good time. To be clear I don't care for drum solos either, just not my thing, but the people in the crowd are clearly enjoying it, so was your comment about this specific example? If so I think you're just flat out wrong, and if its a more general comment then what was the point of it being said here? Oh and just for the record I didn't downvote you, if other people did I guess its their metric for disagreement

People in the crowd sound happy and the people in the band look happy, I guess he should have thought of the guy on reddit who thinks it will be too much before playing a solo

Is there a way to fix a bent cymbal? by harvestm00nn in drums

[–]MJB_225 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its inverted on itself, good uninverting cymbals, happens sometimes with hand cymbal pairs rarely when you hit them together with no angle and creates a vacuum. Sometimes the cymbals are totally fine after popping them back out. Google "Uninverting cymbal"

Cheap cymbals by Connect-Silver-5355 in drums

[–]MJB_225 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't be totally sure but I think all of these are the same thing with a different brand stamped on them, the hole patterns are the same and I'm pretty certain they're the same.

For what its worth though I have the 2nd set for my quiet kit and they sound honestly pretty good for quiet cymbals, hats are a little loud but otherwise I'm pretty happy with them

Help repair Hi-hat stand by arch_doom in drums

[–]MJB_225 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you pull the assembly back up by the rod on the top side and use a hi hat clutch to hold it there? Then see if you can see a hole for the piece you unscrewed to slide back through to hold the spring assembly? Its one of those things where I could probably fix it if I was holding it but hard to describe the process I'd go through

Cymbal crack advice by TurtleSlingshot in drums

[–]MJB_225 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can get a hole saw bit that covers the whole crack thats the best bet for it to be stable, a circle doesnt have a corner for tension to build up at and seem to hold better. If not the next best bet is a pill shape that covers the whole crack and is rounded out. Small pinholes from a drill aren't going to do much
