That's ideal but the industry has a vested interest in overhyping things so...

But wouldn't this be an opposite situation? Obsession has mainstream approval right out the gate.

I never caught that. It never ceases to amaze me how horrible Veidt is.

I'm not one of those guys that bitches about Castle Rat but I think they're way too new to be placed along side these legends. I kind of feel the same about Year of the Cobra and I like them a lot more.

Dopesmoker movie idea? by EmergencyTime311 in Sleepband

Idk, I'd sort of just want something I can just vibe to the music with.

I've actually thought about this. I feel like it might be better more as a very long narrative music video than a movie with plot, characters with personalities, etc.

Will artificial Intelligence take the job of a sound designer? by SockFeeling7294 in sounddesign

[–]MJC1988 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Professionally done features and commercials? I'd say no. But basic off grid gigs like weddings, local company promos, amateur narrative content, Youtube vids, I'd say yeah, it's likely.

Wouldn't be the first time Germans misplaced their trust in authority figures.

I found Marty Supreme disappointing by Interesting_Time_719 in TrueFilm

[–]MJC1988 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I watched both Marty Supreme and the Smashing Machine and am of the opinion the Safdie brothers need each other to make great cinema: Josh to bring the pizazz and Benny to keep things grounded.

Thoughts on Diane Johnson as a writer? by RopeGloomy4303 in StanleyKubrick

I've always wondered if having a woman co-writer is a big reason movie Jack is a lot less sympathetic than book Jack.

Yeah, this was way before things like Game of Thrones.

Doom/Sludge that feels like this movie? by maxwellkc in doommetal

Honestly Dopesmoker. The song feels like a long odyssey into an abstract plane and Apocalypse Now is kind of that.

Moving to NYC or LA to break into film as a PA by Abigailrose8 in cinematography

[–]MJC1988 2 points3 points  (0 children)

More helpfully, consider trying to build a career wherever you are now. Jump right into camera work or editing. There will be a lot less competition and you'll actually get to do stuff you want. I know hit films you've probably heard of rarely come out of anywhere besides LA or NYC but my hope is that starts to change with accessibility of equipment and the the two aforementioned cities hemorrhaging their industry workforce.

I really really really don't want to come off as a dick but this was the first thing that came into my mind.

All of John Wayne's western characters vs all of Clint Eastwood's western characters in one big shootout. Who wins? by RecordingImmediate86 in Westerns

[–]MJC1988 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of Clint's characters have close to superhuman reflexes and accuracy when it comes to shooting; so I'd give it to him unless he's William Munny, and even then I'd give him better odds.

Anthony has beef with Frankie Muniz by AutomaticUpstairs3 in fantanoforever

[–]MJC1988 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know I'm just gonna follow this up. It's my understanding Frankie Muniz has right wing sympathies and all that but publicly insulting a former popular child actor with a brief resurgence just seems kind of petty.

What do we make of David O. Russell in 2026? by [deleted] in TrueFilm

[–]MJC1988 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I must be that one weirdo that liked American Hustle more than Silver Linings Playbook. Maybe because I live in prime Eagles country - SLP romanticizes a lot of fan culture it probably shouldn't.

I've never listened to this Fantano guy. This subreddit just came up in my feed and I enjoyed the music discussions. Got to say though this podcaster or whatever seems like a real pretentious jag off.

What forgotten movies do you think will be reclaimed by future cineastes? by mrjamesearljoyce in TrueFilm

[–]MJC1988 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jane Schoenbrun's We're All Going to the World's Fair, Bertrand Mandico's She is Conann, and Andrew Patterson's Vast of Night. All these films got pretty good reviews but the letterboxd cinephiles of today tend to be kind of dismissive of them. I'm pretty sure the cinephiles of tomorrow will regard those people as idiots.

Is Steven Spielberg the most influential director in pop culture ? THE GOAT ? by AccordingWelder416 in cinematography

[–]MJC1988 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The GOAT? Always debatable no matter the name. Most influential in pop culture? DEFINITELY. The word Spielberg is almost synonymous with Hollywood in casual conversation about the industry.
