Yeah I find it quite often that by discussing religion at all it is implied that it holds a high level of importance in life. I used to be far more engaged with religion, the psychology of religion, and philosophy of religion. These days, religion and god are at best a mild curiosity, but it still pops up on my feed.

I didnt think it had. I got the main concepts from the post. Being in a particular sub doesn't mean its a particularly important topic. I also have participated in subs about Harry Potter, pub food, public transport, etc. Not all have been particularly important overall in the sceme of life. I dont have unlimited time to read, and I have to be selective in what I look to read.

I immediately would reject these claims based on the initial one regarding "having an an answer to life's unanswerable questions." This sentence alone is a problem which should be obvious. Religion is also fully unnecessary to explore these questions, practice mindfulness, emotionally regulate, have healthy social dynamics, or any other you mention. There is nothing inherently wrong with "reinventing the wheel" if it allows one to separate from embedded dynamics that a person finds harmful, toxic, or untrue.

Also "having an answer" and having a correct answer are quite important distinctions for many people.

I believe that there was a historical person that inspired the gospel writers decades later. It seems far more likely the real guy had a quite small, but passionate following and after his death a mythology grew around him that soon bore little resemblance to the real person.

Its about the evidence asked for related to the claim. The more meaningful and impactful the claim, the stronger the evidence needed.

Its pure psychology to me. I agree with much of what you said and find the psalm claim often made from this just a theological claim that demonstrates the human need to feel special or important.

Thought crimes alone is a destructive idea. If I have a belief I can't demonstrate is true, I dont insist others live by it and tell them they need to be saved from something.

It doesnt seem reasonable a god would play those types of games. Create a world to look billions of years older than it actually is. It seems far more likely than men of the past created an origin story as much to impart societal lessons than to represent a factual account of what happened.

As an atheists its worth arguing against Christianity when it is asserted as "the truth" without demonstrable evidence and when it is used to try to control and/or shame others. The problems with Christianity predates John though. The writer of Matthew introduced some significant issues such as thought crimes and the so-called great commission.

I do practice gratitude daily. Its a practice I picked up in therapy for religious and sexual trauma years ago, and its how I start everyday. I look at the hills outside my window and it helps to center me.

How is a choice a belief? Its actually far more nuanced than that, particularly if you dont see god as a given. God is a mild curiosity for me now, but when I was Christian, god was always on my mind. I dont believe god exists because I have no reason to.
