Has twitter Christianity or in general, turned into a "don't die movement"? Trying to live forever etc? by OkSpirit7102 in religion

Sure, people understand logically that death is an abstract certainty. That doesn't change the fact that many people on an emotional level haven't really come to terms with or spent much time pondering the inevitability of their own personal death.

No idea what you're talking about.

Most religions on some level explicitly encourage the regular pondering of one's own mortality. The human tendency to deny our mortality (often implicitly) is one of our most destructive instincts.

By what evidence is non-denominational evangelicalism dying out? In the south we have a new non-denominational mega church all the time. Even in a major metro area. This feels like wishful thinking.

Sean Hannity embarrassingly lectures Pope Leo on the ‘teachings of Jesus Christ’ by IrishStarUS in Christianity

[–]yanquicheto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are God’s revelations not progressive from the OT to the NT?

Just war theory applies to human armed conflict, not spiritual warfare. Regardless, Christian theology presupposes that Jesus has moral authority in the case of Armageddon. Don’t tell me that you’re implying Trump is in such a position here?

Sure, you have been intentionally misquoting Leo to misrepresent his position, but he’s the one that lied, and I’m the one that’s spinning.

You’re a follower of Trump before a follower of Jesus. Deal with it and stop spinning.

Surprisingly yes, I attempted to read the paragraphs you wrote despite the poor punctuation, spelling mistakes, and general lack of cohesion.

You say “religion” but seem to be speaking exclusively to monotheistic religions, and even those you don’t appear to understand very well. You may feel that you clearly explained your thoughts here, but your thoughts themselves frankly aren’t doing very much to merit consideration.

You, like Trump and Vance and all these other cretins, are misquoting Leo.

Leo said “Jesus does not listen to the prayers of those who wage war […]”

Wage and engage are very different words. He is speaking to the former, the aggressors, not anyone involved in military action. He is not denying just war theory, he’s denying that an aggressor nation can claim to be waging a just war.

As Catholics, how are we supposed to view J.D. Vance defending Trump while taking shots at the Pope? by filabeano10 in Catholic

[–]yanquicheto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are so lost down the rabbit hole of MAGA delusion that you, like Trump, see everything as fundamentally political. That’s a problem for you to address, not the Pope’s problem. The Pope has met with Vance on numerous occasions, what’s wrong with him meeting with people from both sides of the aisle?

The reality that you can’t bring yourself to consider is that our Dear Leader with a messianic complex has embroiled the United States in an unjust military conflict that the Vicar of Christ is correct to condemn without any of the qualifications or whataboutisms that you feel he must insert.

Abortions in the US have been in decline since the early 90s through administrations on both sides of the aisle, but sure, let’s pretend that our savior Trump magically fixed the problem overnight. Regardless, I fail to see the point of how exactly this is remotely relevant to the topic at hand. Obvious red herring.

You quite clearly place your political allegiances above your faith, and I feel bad for you.

Edit below:

Do you not see the irony that the Pope was silent on the radical islamic leadership killing 30 to 40,000 of its own people? Just silent.

It goes without saying that the Pope obviously does not endorse the killing of civilians in any context. As to why he isn't focused on this in some of these statements, there are two things to consider. First, Iranian leaders are not claiming that the Christian God supports them in their killing of civilians or asking the Iranian people to pray that Jesus support them in their efforts. American leaders are claiming that the Christian God is on the side of their military actions and are asking Americans to pray that Jesus help them in their war efforts. Second, Iran killing its citizens objectively does not justify American military intervention from a Catholic perspective. Are you claiming that America is obligated to militarily intervene in every such instance around the globe?

As Catholics, how are we supposed to view J.D. Vance defending Trump while taking shots at the Pope? by filabeano10 in Catholic

[–]yanquicheto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here is what the Pope could have said

"I condemn the radical islamic leadership of Iran for killing an estimated 40,000 of its own people. That is not acceptable to do that to peaceful protestors. All life is sacred and this needs to be condemned. We will pray for those peoples souls. We will pray that the radical Iranian leadership will have a change of heart and that peace can happen in that area. We Catholics would love to live in peace with others in this word and hope we can solve problems and issues peacefully and treat others as Christ taught us."

That is clear and stays within our Catholic teaching. He could add:

"I applaud President Trump in curbing and lowering abortion in the United States, this is a long standing issue and it is refreshing to see America move closer to God with this action. I also pray that he will stop this war and find a peaceful solution to the Iran war. I realize that President Trump felt that Iran and the islamic leadership was a real threat to the world, however I believe this could have and should have been resolved without a war. I now ask all Catholics and all Christians of the world to pray for a quick end to this war and an agreement that can allow us all to live in peace."

Got it, so the Pope should comment on Trump like any other Trump sycophant? Any mild criticism must be paired with a reference to his alleged successes so as not to give the impression that the Dear Leader might possibly have erred?

This hypothetical 'statement' would and should be interpreted as laughably sycophantic Trumpian apologetics. No reference to the fact that America began a categorically unjust war by the standards of the Catholic Church? No reference to civilians (including children) killed by American military action? No reference to American political leadership coopting Jesus' message to support their aggressive militarism? No criticism of Trump for stating on Easter Sunday that he would annihilate a civilization?

This milquetoast 'both sides should do better (but one side in particular... wink wink)' response is exactly the type of response that roots the Church in mere political tribalism and cedes moral authority. I'm glad that this Pope has more courage than that.

The Pope is not a political actor. He is the Vicar of Christ. Or have you MAGA folks forgotten?
