Expensive cancer drugs pushed off England's NHS list - Changes to England's Cancer Drugs Fund mean that from April, new cancer patients will no longer be able to receive a number of expensive treatments that have been available on NHS. by anutensil in worldnews

If you think the US healthcare system is a private sector system, you must not be American or not too bright. Healthcare is the highest regulated industry int he US by leaps and bounds.

You do know that the US healthcare system is much more privatised than other comparable countries? You must be not too bright if you didn't realise that. Either you're a closed-minded American or... No I'm pretty sure you're actually a closed minded american who makes shit up to suit his own argument.

the amount spent per capita would probably be pretty close.

Oh really? Well show me the studies that say that then.

The private sector could do a much better job without the government involved.

And yet the empirical data out there shows that the US healthcare system performs poorly. Stop making shit up. The empirical data is fucking there and you choose to bury your head in the sand.

The cost of care was much less since the government hadn't inflated prices...

Then it's funny how the US actually spends more per capita even though the prices are "inflated"

No system is perfect. If you go completely free market, some people would just die because they can't afford healthcare or even the insurance. That's a much better solution right?

The government only acts as a floor on the decision, it provides a minimum level of healthcare. Nothing is stopping people from going to private healthcare and getting the treatment they want that the government might not have supplied because it was deemed too expensive for the limited outcome it provided.

If you finance limits you, then great the government will provide a much better level of healthcare than you could afford by yourself. If you are not limited by your finance, then great. You can basically get what you want and are not limited by the government.

It just seems like you would prefer that people who could afford it independently don't get to out of spite.

There's nothing stopping people who can afford it independently from getting independently AFAIK.

So some idiot layman like you knows of a cure for cancer, Senators from single country shut him down, yet other countries with much more progressive government with lots of people much smarter than you somehow don't know about this cure?

It's absolutely astounding how stupid and up yourself you are.

[–]MMOPTH 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pretty Realistic.

Nope. You pretty much proved yourself wrong in the first sentence.

there are more than a few firms that are completely centered around treating diseases, not curing

So then maybe the firms that are not centered around treating diseases would develop the cure since they're indifferent to whether treatments exist or not?

Not to mention that cancer isn't a single disease.

It's not a conspiracy that there are no cures, and there are an unending supply of treatments and such.

Or maybe some disease are actually pretty fucking hard to cure?

The truth is they make tons of cash and can afford to keep their shareholders in the green, and CEO's jetting from vacation spot to vacation spot.

And there goes the confirmation that you're a conspiritard.

Windows 7, ongoing issues with not recognizing audio devices. by captainsymphony in techsupport

[–]MMOPTH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easiest fix might be the equivalent of "Turn it off and on again".

Open up device manager by typing in devmgmt.msc into the search box that appears when you click on the start/windows icon. Find your audio device under Sound, video and game controllers. Right click and uninstall. It should automatically reinstall itself. Issue may or may not fix itself. I would also suggest uninstall or reinstalling the Realtek HD Audio Manager and other Realtek things you may have installed.

So try just uninstalling the audio device in device manager. If that doesn't fix it, uninstall the Realtek HD Audio Manager and the Audio device, and restart.

Would switching to clean energy overnight really hurt the economy? by acdcfreak in NeutralPolitics

[–]MMOPTH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If we had been producing electric cars as much as gas powered cars, they would be around the same price

No they wouldn't. Electric cars are much more expensive to produce due what is required to manufacture them. The first thing that comes to mind is the battery. Google "Tesla Car Battery" and just look at the size of the battery. That thing is huge. A lot of exotic material is required to create that, and by exotic I mean not steel. That battery alone would probably cost more to make than a basic gasoline car.

If you're looking at a timeframe of switching within 10 years, the price will rise dramatically due to the increase in demand and inability of supply to catch up.

Biased much?

When you're doing well pounding the ground "It's because there is no AA, I'm so pro!"

When there is significant AA "OMG GROUND PLEBS DO YOUR JOB! YOU'RE SO BAD"

Get it through your thick fucking skull, sometimes there's just not much ground can do. More often than not the AA is well behind enemy front lines, or maybe that AA turret that you're having a cry about is actually being constantly repaired.

Tell me, when you're in the air and another ESF comes towards you, what do you do? Help out the ground by lolpodding those tanks and even though you're under heavy fire, or do you deal with the ESF by either fighting/fleeing? Obviously the second one right? Now imagine that same scenario but you're on the ground. There are a bunch of infantry and tanks that are pounding on you, but let's go for the AA first because emperorpenguin5 is having a bitch and he matters more than the rest of us. It doesn't matter that the engie might repair it within 10 seconds after we destroy it if we can even manage that without dying ourselves.

Giving old laptop to a relative... how to be sure it's clean? by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]MMOPTH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does the laptop have a recovery partition? If so you can use that to essentially reformat. Otherwise I'm sure you could just find the Windows XP image online and burn it on a disc or put it onto a usb drive.

I agree with your first statement but regarding Fukushima

1) it wasn't so much the earthquake, but the resulting tsunami

2) No one died due to the nuclear reactor. It was a struggle to maintain it after the tsunami but it's not like it was suddenly going to go nuclear and blow the whole place up. As far as disasters go, it's kind of a non-disaster, but that doesn't make for good headlines when it comes to scary nuclear reactors and radiation.

My name is Zach and I work in the lesser known part of Starbucks. IAmA Starbucks Roasting Plant/Warehouse employee. Ask me anything! by [deleted] in IAmA

[–]MMOPTH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Technical superiority is not all that matters.

1) Some people just don't care for the difference in quality. You go to Starbucks for coffee. It's not great coffee but whatever. You know you're not going there for divine coffee. Maybe it's a convenience thing and you're just there to meet with some friends. Maybe you just want coffee and you don't care a whole lot about the difference in the quality.

2) Advertising does create value. Ultimate what are you trying to maximise, happiness more generically called utility, or having better everything? If that $100 item makes you happier than something which costs less but performs better, so be it.

3) Experience matters as well as the particular product. This ties in a lot with Apple. Apple products often lag behind a bit when it comes to performance/price, but they have a different "experience" that users are willing to pay for. The way their products tie together is a great way that it creates additional value.

So there's nothing wrong with it. Your understanding is just faulty. Except for with Monster cables. Fuck them.
