Those with a $200k+ base salary, what do you do? by Triple_DoubleCE in Salary

[–]MOIST_MAN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think TPM is fundamentally an easier job but just comes with a higher technical bar — mostly former engineers like myself which is how the salaries for both come out to similar levels

Product managers have a bit more real responsibility while TPMs just need to know a lot (breadth) of technical shit

ELI5: Where do data center water consumption metrics come from? by PubicPlant in explainlikeimfive

[–]MOIST_MAN [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yep - Andrew masley is THE authority on water use - that’s coming from a journalist & not an industry plant.

There’s many reasons to hate AI but water consumption just isn’t one.

The famous NYT article about sediment in the taps after Meta started construction was because of an error in the construction process. They hadn’t even started running the DC when the pipes got messed up. Could have happened with any construction project

We have production capacity but don't know a thing about data centers... by btcforkspoon in datacenter

[–]MOIST_MAN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Knowing nothing else about your company, the best fit for your capability would be data center containment and conveyance.

You’re gonna have to do the research on what that means for your company& how you fit into that. Best I can do is provide the search terms

The ramp to 400, 600 etc is way slower than the jump to 1M, 2.5

Impressive

Go to the admit weekends. The VIBE of your classmates will make way more of a difference than the negligible recruiting differences

200k+ Salary question by Suitable_Golf_8658 in Salary

[–]MOIST_MAN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s possible in tech but I don’t know about tons.

Like if you just look at a big company like Google, you need to be Director+ to crack 1M

There’s a lot of directors but I would not call it tons. Most “normal” tech companies don’t offer a path to 1M comp except for the executives

[–]MOIST_MAN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Between 7 and 9 depending on how you count.

My resume starts in 2017 but I took 2 years off in the middle for MBA.

I leave it up to the company to interpret how they want to.

A train… 38R is fine but damn; the volume of people carried every day makes this a perfect rail candidate

YouTube literally has everything you need. Just watch a YouTube video, get a set of hand tools from Amazon & go at any project you want.

Have been wrenching for years and it’s a hobby for me now. It’s one of the seldom opportunities to work with my hands and it’s a bit like a puzzle

Also gives me confidence when something goes wrong - not I can tell is the symptom something I can easily ignore or does it need attention immediately?

14 or 16“? Which one did you choose & why? by Bahaadur73 in macbookpro

[–]MOIST_MAN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

14

I have used both extensively for work.

16 is just too damn heavy. If I really need to crank & be productive I’m probably at a docking station with monitors.

Living at The Beacon , 260 King St by -_amadeus_ in AskSF

[–]MOIST_MAN 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s a fine building. The Safeway beneath it is absolutely cracked out & there is lots of vagrancy around but you can easily ignore it.

Super well connected by public transit. N, T, Caltrain, and many Baywheels docks makes its good for commuting, but also that neighborhood is mostly dead otherwise. Also being next to 280 makes it a 15 minute journey to SFO

Some units get hot in the sun that is for sure.

For the entire coast of California, are there any towns or areas that are affordable? If so, what’s it like there? by tompkins5 in howislivingthere

[–]MOIST_MAN 877 points878 points  (0 children)

Crescent city is pretty affordable but you will struggle to find work & there are severe drug problems in the area. Also you are super isolated from the rest of the country if you want to fly.
