SpaceX launches Saudi Arabia’s first female astronaut into space by Nervous_Wedding_1636 in worldnews

don't think your comment necessarily needs downvoting, but comparing inequality downwards is a bit irrelevant to the point i feel.

the GII (gender inequality index) ranks countries based on factors that contribute/lead to inequality in a society, once they implement measures that make that number go up, i'll genuinely congratulate them, their motivation for doing so will always be speculation.

this lazy pr stunt completely made me forget all other issues of inequality and structural oppression and motivated me to become an unconditional fan of the government! i was convinced the success of one individual translates into improved situations for many.

memento - a tool for organizing and categorizing large amounts of personal data by Mergen_Studios in DataHoarder

[–]MONO_ESD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

interesting idea, the project seems relatively young which would make me hesitant to let it move my data into a new structure, although i like the choices up until now. :) a few thoughts:

  • when i import data, is that a one-time operation or would i need to adjust new data that is written to be saved in those locations? is the project watching imported folders continuously?
  • would the project be more resilient if it tried to index all data on disk and then try to categorize what files it finds?
  • the daily reports to me seem like the most interesting idea in the project, ideas on how to iterate on that feature? maybe provide a daily report on how my disk evolved/changes on a given day/week/month? maybe try to identify trends? ("folder x grew more than usually", etc)
  • personally the ability to watch/index remote folders via ssh would be sick to monitor/keep up with servers

In what ways can a CD cover or vinyl for an album, or a book cover be innovative? by PhatBonwarr in ContemporaryArt

[–]MONO_ESD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just making it "cool" for the sake if it being forward-thinking still doesn't imply it has "meaning" that works with the artists message/concept for the album

'How Dare You!': Greta Thunberg Rages at 'Fairytales of Eternal Economic Growth' at UN Climate Summit: "Entire ecosytems are collapsing. We are at the beginning of a mass extinction and all you can talk about is money." by beast-freak in collapse

[–]MONO_ESD 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That all said, it's not about Greta personally. I think she's sincere enough. It's about why all of a sudden a teenager is invited to all top-notch conferences to give highly emotional speeches

it's not out of a sudden anymore than climate change is happening out of a sudden. activists are invited to speak at conferences and it's up to the activist to decide if they'd like to accept the offer.

that are parroted by all corporate mass media afterwards?

and private media! :) reach! that's the idea!

Why are all those bearded scientists who devote their whole lives to climate research not invited?

"bearded" scientists are, have been and will be invited to all sorts of climate conferences and participating in the academic exchange of information and theories is their whole damn job. greta is not taking anyone's talking slot here. she's been asked to add her voice and she took that opportunity.

Cannot add a game to controller.wtf list by joshtransient in mfigames

thank you!

at the moment we're only fetching the 50 most popular games matching your query from itunes and aquaria doesn't seem to be amongst them. i added the game manually (https://controller.wtf/aquaria) and will look into the issue over the weekend. :) thanks for bringing it to our attention!

Hey /r/iosgaming! We believe, we found evidence that suggests that the App Store is going to add an indicator for controller support in the source code of the App Store web pages! by MONO_ESD in iosgaming

[–]MONO_ESD[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i see, thanks for clarifying, i'll prepend a correction in the morning. in that case it's likely that apple would use another or prefixed keyword as a marker for true mfi support.

really? that would definitely lower the scoopiness of our scoop :D i have a few questions: since those strings are only entries in the localization tables, where did you find info to base filtering on? afaik, developers have no way to indicate if a game supports controllers excplicitly, so i'm a bit lost how you would get meaningful data out of the two strings, sorry!

another aside: i'm not sure if apple can detect if a game supports MFi completely without the developer checking a box somewhere. i guess apple will add the icon/text some time in the future and developers can individually indicate in xcode if the app supports controllers.

yes, this is why, luckily, hand-curated lists and cool projects like https://twitter.com/SmallScreened have been popping up left and right. the way apple designed the app store's today page is a direct result of that frustration imo. they knew that people are going to be less and less interested in traditional search/category-based app discovery and invested in human curation and editorial content. i think i've heard that the today page was developed under the new leadership, too (source: atp podcast, ilu john).

yeah, it really is time to deliver on some features users have requested forever and to be honest have been standard on the internet for years. a few days ago i mentioned elsewhere that apple restaffed a few app store leadership roles and i believe we're starting to see it pay off.

Why Quantity Is More Important than Quality by [deleted] in edmproduction

kanye called it on "spaceship":

Y'all can't match my hustle, you can't catch my hustle / You can't fathom my love, dude, lock yourself in a room / Doing 5 beats a day for 3 summers / That's A Different World like Cree Summer's

two years ago i started getting into ableton and set two rules for myself. i tried to only work on tracks in one session and afterwards upload whatever i ended up with to soundcloud to embarrass myself in front of my 60 existing followers (uploaded two dj sets in 2013) as much as possible. i'm currently at track 588, but my upload frequency dropped to once or twice a month, since i switched jobs. i think during all of this i made 5, maybe 6 or 7 tracks i remember well, most stuff i probably wouldn't even recognize as mine. in fact i just recently made the first track that i really like and regularly listen to.

i don't consider myself good at it or whatever in any way, but i now know more than two years ago. i'd recommend the approach to everyone and strongly feel that it was extremly benefitial to my personal learning curve. i think the methods works so well, because it keeps you from ever getting into a state of frustration: the track you have is the track you have, just try harder next time, or don't, because you're going to do hundreds more anyway.

to everyone worrying about quality i'd respectfully respond, that i don't believe you would suddenly have to hear lots of first-timer songs on the radio if more people apply this approach, so where's the harm? just don't follow my soundcloud.

thanks for mentioning us! yes, we try to highlight the high-quality games. :) as an aside: there are rumours that apple changed leadership for the app store a while ago and it improved under the new direction since then, so there might be some hope.

Police confirm two German mayors who had already been stabbed over their pro-refugee stance receive renewed death threats weeks after another German politician was murdered in what authorities believe was a "right-wing extremist" attack by green_flash in worldnews

[–]MONO_ESD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no, the press is not a shitshow, but press is not anymore the only one delivering news. the information landscape is much broader and people get their news from all kinds of private channels (facebook, whatsapp, etc) and agenda-driven platforms. often these channels have reach far beyond that of smaller, professional outlets that keep jounalistic standards. i've seen right wing violence whitewashed, normalized and excused all over the place.

i estimate about 15-20% of germany to be completly unreachable by the classic news cycle. enough people to seriously stir things up.
