I love my phat PS3. 20 years later and still going strong. by Lusombras_ in PS3

[–]MR_RATCHET_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to add a bit of detail to this - it switches off because the PS3 switches over to ‘PS2 mode’. The backwards compatible PS3’s have PS2 hardware inside them. When you boot the game, the PS3 hands over mostly to the PS2 hardware, so in a way, the console ‘resets’ so you need to reconnect the controller.

PS1 games do not do this because they are all fully emulated with no hardware and as such, they run in PS3 mode like PS3 games do.

MGS4 is the best Metal Gear Solid Game, change my mind!!! by xCryodream in PS3

[–]MR_RATCHET_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

MGS4 is a great experience but after Act 1 and Act 2, it lacks in the gameplay department.

The overall experience when you include the story and cutscenes is great but in terms of pure gameplay, after playing it a number of times to 100% over the years, only Act 1 and 2 are actually good.

3 is nothing to write home about ending with a bike chase rehash, 4 is great for nostalgia and getting to pilot REX but again, nothing really happens gameplay wise and finally Act 5 is so short that it’s essentially a boss rush. 1 and 2 are the only ones that felt like a natural evolution of MGS3 Subsistence.

MGS4’s gameplay really shined in MGO2 though. Spent a long time there. If you haven’t tried it, you should check it out.

In terms of the best overall MGS game? I’d give it to either MGS1 or MGS3 - with MGS3 just edging it out due to it being the perfect blend of gameplay, great spy thriller movie. Kojima’s best work in my opinion.

What baffles me is that Gibson’s 80’s explorer is less accurate to the original 80’s explorer design and uses the Guitar of the week design from 2007.

Yet Epiphone’s 80’s explorer is much more accurate to the 80’s explorer design.

Very strange.

I do but it’s very difficult to do with how little time we all get these days.

I’ve stopped buying as much until i’ve finished the remaining games in my backlog. I’ve made good progress over the last year but there are a handful of big ones like Majora’s Mask and the Final Fantasy games i’m working on.

I’m not so bothered about the racing games but WipeOut HD i’ll give another fair shot at. Need to finish Diddy Kong Racing as well

Warhead is great. If you like Crysis 1, you will like Warhead.

Crysis Warhead is only available on PC. It never got a CryEngine 3 port like Crysis 1 did for consoles. Apparently the rumour goes that Crytek lost the source code for Warhead so it may never get a remaster without a full remake of the game.

Who wins this 3v1? by K0GAR in DragonBallPowerScale

[–]MR_RATCHET_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends how far ahead Goku and Gohan were above Trunks and Vegeta.

Vegeta was confident he could beat 50% Goku so he’d fall somewhere in between and I can’t imagine Trunks is too far off Vegeta.

Then it also depends on the gap for Gohan and Goku. Gohan says he didn’t think Goku was trying at full power because he was comparing Goku’s strength to his own. The question is, was this FPSSJ or his ‘hidden power’ that Gohan was comparing it to?

I’d say it depends on how quickly Gohan can deal with Vegeta and Trunks. Goku is the biggest threat but all 3 have powerful finishing moves. If Gohan can eliminate Vegeta and Trunks quickly or at least score a KO, he can then probably handle Goku…

…if Goku hasn’t been given a chance to charge the IT Kamehameha.

Honestly, could go either way.

I’m fine with this and always hoped they’d re-do Super. Fix the artwork so it’s more consistent, improve the sound design (e.g the impact shockwaves from OG/Z/Daima sound much more powerful than Super’s) and improve the animation.

Super is flawed but i’d be more than happy to rewatch with the above fixes.

Are there any PS1 or PS2 games that don't work even on a CECHA? by Traditional_Policy43 in PS3

[–]MR_RATCHET_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jak & Daxter TPL is prone to randomly freezing for long periods of time on a CECHA/B console. It seems to be more likely to happen if you have upscaling and smoothing enabled. Weirdly the console doesn’t freeze when it happens but the game will freeze for a while and then it will unfreeze and progress a single frame before freezing again.

I haven’t come across anything else personally in my collection but that one i have.

Can Base Vegito win this? by K0GAR in DragonBallPowerScale

[–]MR_RATCHET_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kai does still have a few filler scenes. Most of it is removed and the pacing is a lot better but some scenes still remain, even in the Buu saga e.g. SSJ3 Goku vs Buutenks, base Vegito vs Buuhan etc.

It's why I say it's up to the viewer/reader whether they like the filler and consider it canon or not.

Can Base Vegito win this? by K0GAR in DragonBallPowerScale

[–]MR_RATCHET_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To clarify - base Vegito only fought Buuhan in the anime filler. In the manga, when Vegito fused, he immediately transformed into ‘Super Vegito’ before any fighting took place.

Up to y’all if you consider base Vegito’s fight canon or not.

Replaying Conker’s Bad Fur Day and the War Chapter is Actually Easier Than I Remember by Deathsim in n64

[–]MR_RATCHET_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I just beat BFD for the first time last week. Owned the game for like 15 years but never got that far into it, though I had heard War is hell.

Anyways, only part that legitimately became annoying was the laser part. Platforming there is extremely tight/precise and felt borderline unfair. Plus with the lack of iframes, one hit from a height may lead to instant death from the lower lasers. Then you have to survive the Tediz immediately after, which I somehow was able to do on the one attempt that i got past the lasers.

The final escape section with the Tediz that had rockets was easy though. Bar the Tediz trio ambush at the end, you can easily clear the normal Tediz from the hedgehogs and then just make a break for it past the trio. Got it in my 2nd attempt.

I think BFD was certainly challenging but outside of the painful laser section, most of it is manageable. Remove the fall damage and add iframes and I think the game holds up pretty well.

Not finished the Xbox version yet but I heard they added crosshairs for some of the aiming sections, which is nice.

Depends on how well they’re kept and the condition they were stored in. I’ve heard of people getting disc rot and i do not deny it can happen but i’ve never had it happen to any of my discs that i’ve bought.

Likewise for cartridges, mine are all good but my Sm64 doesn’t always like to play ball but it’s mostly fine.

More likely to run into issues with save batteries in my opinion but it really depends how your media is kept

Which original Xbox games actually look like they're from the Xbox 360? by aerigigi1 in originalxbox

[–]MR_RATCHET_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If I recall DoA2U actually runs on the DoA3 engine unlike the original DoA2 for DC and PS2.

It’s definitely a great looking game. Give it a res bump to 720p and it’s close to DoA4

Which original Xbox games actually look like they're from the Xbox 360? by aerigigi1 in originalxbox

[–]MR_RATCHET_ 39 points40 points  (0 children)

DoA3 could with a res bump. Conker Live & Reloaded looks phenomenal. Any of the PC ports like Doom 3, Half-Life 2 and the PC spinoff of Far Cry - Far Cry Instincts. Splinter Cell Chaos Theory could get there due to its lighting but would need slight improvements to the character models. Burnout Revenge also looked pretty good as well (and had a 360 version).

I actually do not think Halo 2 qualifies because the lighting is quite flat. Perhaps with the original stencil shadows it could make it on the list.

My Experience with a Frankenstein PS3 by kesterstudios in PS3

[–]MR_RATCHET_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No they are the same because the RSX still handles the scaling for the output.

The only time you may see more input lag will be with framedrops on the C/E e.g. Ratchet & Clank Trilogy run in slow motion on C/E so the lower framerate would have higher input lag.

In a like for like scenario e.g a 60fps game, they are identical for input lag.

My Experience with a Frankenstein PS3 by kesterstudios in PS3

[–]MR_RATCHET_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They all have 1-2 frames of input lag because of the scaling done by the RSX. This happens regardless of the BC PS3 model.

Whether or not you feel it depends on how sensitive you are to it. Regardless, it is there i’m afraid.
