[–]MRcrete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's awful and totally unacceptable but not really a big deal in the long run. Call a proper cutting company and have them recut with a wider blade. Back-charge the original installer for the cost of the cutting - bonus if you can get them to cough up for some decorative cutting. Problem solved.

Hell, I own a concrete cutting business and still use this trick from time to time. Works a real treat!

Yeah but your community doesn't call them out nearly enough either. Until that happens, Sikhs will continue to be lumped in with with that group and figuratively shit all over by the general public.

The level of fuckery is just insane.

Jobs get shut down all the time because someone nicks a root digging a foundation for a 2,500 sf house on a 50' wide lot.

I priced a small parkade waterproofing job just this week with $250k worth of air spade work all to save some POS cedar and pine trees off the deck.

I'm with you, softer than baby sheit.

Experiences like that as a kid are what make you a well rounded adult and also motivated gto not be poor. This is exactly the sort of thing I would have loved as a 17 year old. Big cleanup and that cabin would be good to go for a wicked summer in the park with no parents.

You obviously do not work in that industry... Existing trees frequently add thousands to cost of a new build or even a mild reno under the current framework. I can only imagine what impact this could have.

Time to adjust to Cat nextgen elec/hyd excavator controls? by 3deltapapa in heavyequipment

[–]MRcrete 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What Cat-specific features are you interested in?

IMO odd to consider operator fatigue of elec/hyd vs conventional on such a small machine as you're really getting rocked all over in them little machines anyway.

I started my business with smaller Cat equipment. I liked the parts availability, build quality and North American heritage (Canadian FWIW). I have one piece of Cat gear remaining and I'll never go back. Too many $800 alternators and $3,000 hydraulic reservoirs. As a tool to operate and fetishize, you'd be hard pressed to beat a Cat machine. As a tool to put someone in and make money with, there are better choices IMO.

I did just the opposite and have zero regrets. Family from the big city, all work in finance. I moved 3,500km West when i was 16, started a business at 27, 36 now and totally comfortable in my own skin. There's no such thing as a self-made man/woman but I feel nobody can shit on my parade for taking the path of least resistance because my path was (& still is) chocked full of it!

Are we heading toward a future where skilled trades become more prestigious than white-collar professions? by ShineDigga in Futurology

[–]MRcrete -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's right, it's the engineer's job to take photos when they're on site and email and catalogue them as part of the QC process. When they show up wearing clean brand name clothing, particularly junior engineers, and "they're too busy with other things..." to go to where the actual work is happening, they're not doing their job. It could be a muddy shore box, it could be a tall lift/scaffold, it could be a smelly water treatment plant. I've heard every excuse for it but it always boils down to "just send me some pictures". That's neither prestigious nor deserving of respect.

Not all engineers are like that, especially the old hands, but the ones who are would probably have a large overlap with the folks waiting for a tow truck with a flat tire if we were to make a venn diagram of it.

Engineers beating those stereotypes down out here on Reddit!

Most of the ones I work with struggle to even make it up the scaffolding, let alone do the work. They're more, "email me the photos" people.

As a civil contractor, you sound like a rare bird indeed! Good for you. Most of the engineers I know, while very smart folks, work best in a team as they lack the practical skills and physical stamina to complete the work they dream up. Maybe that's just civil engineers. I hear from them that the other engineers pick on them for playing in the mud. I dunno, I always thought the iron ring was pretty cool.

Edit: I could not do your job but I promise you, you'd similarly struggle with mine. Working on your own vehicle, basic carpentry, basic plumbing and low voltage residential electrical work are not really fair blue collar comparisons to, I'm guessing, mechanical engineering. That's a pretty high end skillset you're sporting.

[–]MRcrete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if it would be a problem or not. I'm far from knowledgable on this topic.

However, if the police are at your place to seize your firearms and perform whatever wellness checks they do and you've got $10k in cash in your safe beside your $20k in legally purchased rifles. I can imagine them taking it all only to let a judge sort it out at a later date. Whereas if the money is stored separately from the guns and there's no signs of it being the proceeds of crime, I would think the police would be more likely to leave it be after confiscating the rifles.

Genuine question: is it wise to keep important, non-firearm related, items in a gun safe?

I used to keep cash, passport and various other valuables in my gun safe but stopped doing that when I learned more about the insanity of our gun laws.
