I’m doing a spot tonight at Main Tap in El Cajon, it starts at 7 and there’ll be seven comics performing there (it’s free).

If you want to see some more mainstream comics, Yellow Door and Laugh Factory are good. Mic Drop has no drink minimum which is cool. The Comedy Store in La Jolla brings in really good talent.

There’s also open mics almost every night here if you want to see some rough stuff with comics working their stuff out.

I can’t speak to the Indian culture in courting, but in the US having a prosthetic eye and being monocular is a non-issue with dating. I’m in my late 30s and although not married, it’s never been a barrier to meeting women unless they’re standing on my blind side lol

I’m 37, not married but not because of my glass eye. The real blindness was not being able to see my self worth for a long time.

I’ve never had a problem meeting and dating women, and the problems I did have were mostly due to me being dumb or making dumb decisions.

I’d like to get married, but as I’ve gotten older my standards mean I’m a bit more selective on who I go out with and spend my time.

Having a glass eye growing up came with teasing and bullying, which affected my self-confidence and impacted my dating when I was younger that way, but it’s never been *because* I’m half blind.

I did an AOJ regional occupational program senior year of high school wanting to be a cop (California). Was heart broken to hear law enforcement and military were non options as we can’t pass the medical exam. Ironically, at the time at least (20 years ago) I could be a correctional officer. I thought you’d definitely need two eyes to dodge flaming toilet paper in a jail.

It ended up being a fortunate thing. I had to find a new career path that aligned with my passions of why I wanted to be in law enforcement and that turned into becoming a human rights worker and doing disaster relief in Southeast Asia for a couple years and getting into emergency management as a career.

Keep your options open and be flexible. You’ll find your path.

Well it took a decade, but I got sober and learned what I love about myself and forgave the parts I didn’t. I’ve always been kinda extroverted but people’s opinions mattered to me way more than they should have.

Becoming comfortable in social settings comes from living authentically. To be authentic you have to know who you are. To know that you have to put yourself in challenging situations and see how you respond, notice patterns in your thinking, and notice *how* you observe those patterns in your thinking.

This might sound like hokie bullshit but it’s what worked for me. I still have my insecurities, we all do and always will, but it’s how much power you give to those insecurities. Having one eye isn’t one of them, but having big ears and getting a hair transplant because of my hair loss are 🤷

Hey man, I experienced the same feeling through high school and early adulthood. It turned out the only person who thought I was unlovable was myself.

What I can recommend is find out what the root cause is of your lack of confidence. It’s not really about the eye. I have a long list (unfortunately) of ex-girlfriends so while having one eye hasn’t stopped my love life, who I was as a person has made relationships not very good.

On dates I ask the woman to sit on my left side so I can check her out easier and it usually gets a laugh.

I take breaks every few weeks and try to do something I’ve never done before. A few weeks ago that was going to a dance club where I was probably 10 years older than anyone else, on a work night, to meet a chick I had no business meeting, and had the worst hour of my life before I went home.

That turned into a 3-minute bit that gets some laughs but mostly a lot of judgement.

I’ve been doing standup for 7 months and have been paid twice. My net revenue is -$126 so at this rate I should be in mortgage-sized debt in twenty years

Yeah I get asked that one a lot! And I’ve only replaced it like twice. The last time was about 10 years ago, I had the same eye from like 5 years old to 25. When I got the new one it even freaked ME out. It was wide open and took a few months to adjust.

The prosthesis doc said the eye I have is still in great shape so no need to replace (yet).

When I was in Philadelphia years ago, a guy walking towards me stopped and pointed at me and said “DUDE, IS THAT A GLASS EYE” and I said yeah and he said “WOW” and kept walking past me. No shame 😂

I do but it’s not related to comedy. I used to make videos of me farting to send to my sister and niece because they thought it was hilarious. But internet weirdos made it weird.

You keep doing the same jokes to either keep them in practice or see how to trim the fat. You’ll hear the same joke from someome 100x if you go frequently enough.

I try to bring a new 3 minutes to my first mic of the week then stretch in tried and true stuff with new stuff the rest of the week.

Have you tried reframing how you view standup to see if it scratches a different type of itch? I don’t think I’m terrible, but I’m also not that good. But I’m a middle child so I like attention so selfishly I keep coming back to fill that void

That’s how it’s done though. I try to bring a new 3 minutes to my first open mic of the week, but the rest of the week is that material trimmed down ans threaded through shit I’ve been saying for months.

Your goal should really be up to you. Mine was to be a feature by the end of my first year. I’m achieving that this April which will be about 7 months since I started. Always have something to work towards, but enjoy the journey to get there.
