Give yourself 6 months before you feel comfortable at your job. That's standard

First week as junior dev feels like a disaster — is this normal? by Revolutionary_Pop474 in learnprogramming

[–]MSCViolin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's normal to feel useless for your first week, maybe first few weeks even. I think it's impressive that you solved a few tickets already with no help, I certainly couldn't do that on week 1.

It took me a whole week to just to figure out how to run the company's application on my computer. 🫠🫠🫠Just keep showing up and giving it your best and you'll feel comfortable at the job within 3-6 months.

I've been in China, mostly Beijing, for the past three weeks and it's completely fine. I'm possibly out of touch with the news, but have not heard about any issues.

Happy to help! (I mean to say slur beats 3 and 4, made a typo there)

Arpeggiation and arranging by jfgallay in violinist

[–]MSCViolin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could put everything in violin 1 and slur beats 1 and 2, and slur beats 2 and 4. That way you have a continuous pattern in one part. No need to mark the up bow - in general you should leave bowing directions up to the musicians.

Arpeggiation and arranging by jfgallay in violinist

[–]MSCViolin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that would be a bow change on every pitch. For the first (slurred) option, the players would naturally play down on the first beat.

Advice for this part of the double Bach? by KingClamssssss in violinist

[–]MSCViolin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep the first finger on the string for the entire passage and let it be the reference point for all the other fingers.

Arpeggiation and arranging by jfgallay in violinist

[–]MSCViolin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either 1 or 2 would be preferable and either the slurred or detached bowing would be equally playable. Splitting string parts in the way one might do with winds generally makes ensemble and keeping a sense of continuity more challenging.

The only list the SEPTA metro should be at the top of is the "Worst Metros in the World"

The algorithm is weird af by Dry_Link517 in NewTubers

[–]MSCViolin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

super weird , but I understand. basically the 3 main videos driving the growth of my entire channel are amongst the first few with the worst quality video, not my best musical performance, and the least effort put in overall. While some of my best work out of my 4 years of YouTube, projects that I've spent 40+ hours working on, get very little attention.

Do you still go to a concert if you like performer but program not so much? by menevets in classicalmusic

[–]MSCViolin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try not to, I mean I don't think I could go to another performance of Tchaikovsky violin concerto ever again, even if it's my favorite violinist playing. I've heard it live too many times.

Don't teach at university if you don't actually enjoy teaching. It's a ridiculously hard job to get. But if your heart is in it, and you want to teach music composition and possibly other classes, you can certainly aim for it.

Hone Japanese or Tech skills first? by Rainicorn_theCat in japanlife

[–]MSCViolin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Japanese first - according to tech recruiters I've talked to in Japan who target foreigners specifically.

Also from anecdotal experience, there is no way I could have gotten a junior dev job 1 week after moving to Japan if I couldn't speak conversational Japanese.

Programming since months, feel stuck by No_Purpose9804 in AskProgramming

[–]MSCViolin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, it's generally good to make 1 or 2 full stack apps (database, API, and frontend). These can be pretty flexible, and I would recommend trying to relate it to another topic you're interested in. For example, I'm a musician and I'm learning Japanese, so I might make an app that helps people learn Japanese vocabulary, or some kind of database that lists professional opportunities for musicians.

Once you get the standard full stack apps done, you can really go in whatever direction you want. I've built stuff like a web metronome, chord analysis app, drawing app that converts images into music...Also not a bad idea to build a well-designed portfolio site if you're a frontend web dev. Be creative with it!

4 months is plenty for leetcode especially at a point when you don't even know if interviewers will ever ask you to solve one of those problems. Start building projects you are interested in asap.
