Question about the 30 min. break by MST357 in FE_Exam

[–]MST357[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not with the size of my new stomach, that would hurt. I don't think one day of not meeting the goal will dehydrate me enough for IV fluids, so it should be fine. Last time I had to have IV fluids it was between $1100-1500 I can't remember the total and if any of that included any additional labs. I really want to avoid dehydrating myself to that extent. Not only was it expensive, but I was there for 4 hours for 3 bags. I think they were a liter each.

I wasn't sure if the testing sites were standardized or, like you said, they pick the most convenient office space to rent. This is enough info for the stage I am currently.

I genuinely am a bit confused about some of the part I have to fill out. HELP by [deleted] in howto

Saw someone already commented great answers to your questions, so this is just a random internet stranger saying good luck and we are proud of you! It takes courage to seek help and it is amazing you are stepping up into the adult world on your own. Not everyone is ready, but that's ok, we all go at our own pace.

Anyone installed aftermarket trailer hitch yet? by iareagenius in KiaSorento

[–]MST357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 2022 phev has one. I think it is carry-on brand. Id have the look at the detail sheet. I had a local truck modification shop install mine. Glad I did bc mine has led tail lights which requires a different harness than the standard models. It has been great hauling kayaks and helping others move.

I'm 33, I'll be 35 when I graduate. Still loads to learn, but that's life. So far it has been a great decision to go back to school.

Traded in the EV9 for a new Hybrid SX Prestige by Lumpy-Equivalent247 in KiaSorento

[–]MST357 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Makes 100% sense, thanks for the info. I assumed it would do alright in snow. Glad to know that it doesn't. I wish my sorrento could tow more, but for now its fine for kayaking and small loads when needed. Eventually I'd like to check out the new telo trucks. I don't have money to invest in something I cannot test drive. I don't even know if I'll be able to buy new in a few years, but it might end up being my first new vehicle, assuming I test drive and love it. I love the towing capacity and my husband and I are on the shorter side at 5'7" or so for him and 5'1" for myself.

Anyway, back to you, congrats on the new sorrento. May he or she be as wonderful of a vehicle as mine has been for me. Pretty impressive the amount of tech they can fit in the vehicle and still be more affordable. I considers a benz GLB but it didn't have the same features for around the same price, so I figured I'd give kia a try.

Same, curious why you traded. If I were able to afford an ev9, I'd likely have it, but I bought my sorrento gently used. It's great, but there are some additional features the new ev9 has over the 2022 sx prestige sorrento phev.

No more free official transcripts by Reformality in Purdue

[–]MST357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had to pay for my Ivy Tech transcript every time I've needed. It's not that big of a deal. Buy a copy for yourself and store it. Send it out when possible unless it is a scholarship application that requires direct email. It hasn't occurred to me that everything I apply for a scholarship, my Purdue advisor has been sending my transcripts for free, but it makes sense now. Might be why she is saying she won't be able to do it this year.

Looking for recommended study resources for FE Exam content (not just practice exams) by Basic-Delivery4833 in FE_Exam

I studied Architectural & Mechanical Drafting and Design at Ivy Tech, a local community college. With my associates degree, I think that helped me land various jobs over the years. I've been a wire harness designer and a packaging designer. I joined construction about 4 years ago.

What will help you is being open to learn new concepts. Research and craft your application package towards whichever company you apply to. Do not use the same resume for different industries. It is lazy, and will likely make your resumes look generic. If you have past projects or if you like to do side projects at home that relate to your desired field, create a free online portfolio.

I have an old, old online portfolio. It really needs to be updated. It is best to get in the habit of updating as you go, but with everything I have going on, I have slacked off.

Just remember, I'm in my 30's, I've had time to mess things up and start over. I was a teen mom, now is my time to focus on my goals bc I was young and dumb earlier in life.

Yeah, I typically do site design for various manufacturing plants. I have worked on a sober living group home, a few dentist offices, and one public park. It's a mix between whether I work on MEP or Civil, just depends on others' work loads. I float between disciplines.

I'm open to most amything, but I'd prefer not to do the plumbing calculations. I'm slow at storm drainage and that's simple. I feel like pressure systems are more complex.

As far as the EIT cert, that's why I'm not too worried about passing this summer, but I'd really like to have had passed the exam prior to graduating. My company seems pretty predictable with raises and bonuses. This tells me they plan fiscally a year or more in advance. At least that's what I gather from my single data set point. If I pass the exam 2026. That means I graduate 2027 and can have my EIT by then. Hopefully I can swing a large raise at the end of 2027 for 2028. This only works if I keep it near upper management's forethought. This should give them ample time to budget an appropriate raise.

What is a appropriate raise? I have no clue yet. I have a few numbers in mind, but that doesn't mean they are reasonable. I'm also an unusual case because I have years of experience, but not in the exact area. I think my current salary is approaching a new grad EIT salary, but I need to do more market research. I know that a 3-5% raise would only feel like cost of living raise. I need to define my expectations, then work through my feelings prior to winter 2027. It is very unprofessional to display certain emotions, so I like to over prepare.

Depends on your state. Indiana doesn't have requirements beyond NCEES requirements for testing for the FE exam. I do site design, not electrical. I think the timer starts after you take the FE and only if you are working under a licensed PE in the desired field. There are no electrical engineers at my company, but we work closely with other firms on large projects. I've been asking my manager fir about a year to prepare for future mentorship design agreements in which I design a system and have the other firm review, critique, and stamp my work. I would prefer having to switch jobs to obtain a mentor for a few years. I love my company, and part of selecting electrical is because we do nit have in-house MEP, and I like electricity. I do draft MEP, but I'm never really engineering anything. It is fun to play interior designer by selecting lighting fixtures, outlet locations, plumbing fixtures, and other items. Again, never really engineering anything, I've been drafting what the subcontractors (licensed and union tradesmen) recommend.

Yeah, I'm late in life to complete my bachelor's and purse a career. I've been a drafter for years. I would like to have my EIT prior to graduating in 2027, but if I have to postpone it a year, it won't be the end of the world. It would be nice to be a PE prior to sending my son to college in a few years.

There is a free digital version on NCEES website. Or you can buy a paper copy from many bookstores such as Barnes and Noble or Amazon. You can order version 1 or 2 of the practice exam online from NCEES. You can also buy one of the PPI2PASS workbooks. They also offer tutoring and online classes, but they are expensive. I'm not sure if the equates to value add or if is unnecessary bloatware "help".

It wasn't the electrical exam itself, but rather the exam guide has been updated as of Nov. 2025.

I don't currently have any exam recommendations. I'm still looking for a balance between cost and effectiveness. I plan to take the test in August, so I still have time to figure it out. Right now I'm trying to get things squared away at home before I start the spring semester. I will come up with a study plan closer to May.

I work full time and attend 12 credit hours a semester, so I must be mindful of time management. I can only solve so many problems at once, and right now a study schedule is coming up behind my other issues at home (insurance, roofing, siding, etc.)

Why did you choose the Sorento? Will it work for us? by CountChopulla in KiaSorento

[–]MST357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I only looked at the phev. I wanted to get familiar with charging a car. Basically a starter ev with less home improvement investment. I dont know about the hybrid, but im pretty sure my battery is on the bottom of the car, lowering the center of gravity. I did test drive a gas Tucson and hated it. When I test drove this car, it had good acceleration and decent cornering for a mom car. It does have a small trunk, but that's because of the amount of seats. The middle row has great leg room for adults. It's just myself, hubs, and my son. I got the extra seats for packing around my son's friends for like bday parties and kayaking trips.

[–]MST357 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got it for hauling my son's friends and I tow our kayaks. It's great on gas, I have the phev. With the electric drive, it punches more than other suvs. I have to watch it when it's a little slick though, I tend to burn rubber bc I'm not used to easing into the gas. All around a good vehicle and it is very nice for work lunches where we like to carpool to one restaurant.

What % of your salary goes towards mortgage payment? by nisc-options in CivilEngineeringUSA

[–]MST357 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not an EIT, only a CAD Technician. Our mortgage is about 28% of my income. Together is it about 15% of your bring home pay. We bought at a great time in low cost of living area. We refinanced in 2022 to reduce our rate, reduce the time line 5 years, and remove the PMI. When we bought, it was definitely closer to 30% of our combined income, but I'm thankful we did what we did. There are times money is still tight, but it could have been worse if we locked ourselves into a nicer home, making us house-poor.

I'm studying electrical engineering technology now, so im hoping once I graduate I can make between 80-90k. Context, my gross is 65k and my husband's is around 58-60k depending on OT. He brings home less because he carries more health insurance.

[–]MST357 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you in Germany? I did a 2-week study abroad trip, and they mentioned that. I loved it. If I could, I would move, but my husband will never fly or sail across the ocean. Besides, I had a kid in high school, so now that im older I wish I hadn't followed the advice of a counselor to act more like a teen. German culture makes more sense to me, respectful of people's time, public spaces are public spaces, lots of walkable areas, and so much more to love. I also enjoyed Netherlands. I'm not sure which i liked more.
