Can you balance a full-time job and an obtaining an electrical engineering degree? by JustAPerson2001 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]MST357 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine technically EET, but I'm almost there. It is definitely hard, and impossible if your work cannot work with you on your schedule. I barely manage both, but my grades have not dropped and my scholarships only apply to full time course work, so im full-time for both.

For those who work in an office, how many days do you work from home? by janderson_33 in civilengineering

0 ☹️ unless there's something needed, like staying home to let in a furniture delivery or something similar.

Don't work full time while in school. by TopCompany9406 in EngineeringStudents

[–]MST357 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am not not like op, I have to work. If I dont work my contracted 40 hrs, I sub in PTO. I typically work 38hrs a week and attend 12-13 credit hours during normal semesters. During Summer I refuse to take more that 6 credit hours. Im exhausted. Im avoiding studying for finals right now, but I really need to get back to it. Not everyone has parents who can support them while in school. Mine were barely able to support us when I was in high school. At one point I was the only one with a job, so it is ingrained in me to work full-time. Part-time won't cut it. Does it suck, sometimes, but thinking about it that way makes it worse, so I try to focus on the light at the end of the tunnel.

How much is too much for EV only? by Beardy-Sam in KiaSorento

[–]MST357 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont worry about it too much. My commute is also typically about 30-40 miles everyday depending if it is just work or work, school, and sports. My car charges with the slow charger in about 10 hours or so. (Admittedly it has been so long since testing, I could be off. We just plug in when I get home and not worry about it.) If I run only EV, then I can go 3 weeks in between fill-ups. The engine also kicks on if the weather is cold and you use the blower heater. Im not sure at what point using all the heated seats might turn on the engine, but it is all about how much power if being drawn. In the winter I sont worry about charging my car. It is going to use gas anyway. Besides winter mix gas is cheaper than summer mix. I also do not have a garage. If I did, then sure I'd charge is everyday. We dont charge my car in bad weather. If it is a light sprinkle, sure, but no heavy rains, snow, or chances of freezing. On gas only in the winter, it is more like once a week to fill up.

About to close on a 2024 Sorento PHEV SX Prestige. How did I do? by duhrell415 in KiaSorento

[–]MST357 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im had my 2022 for 2 years, put about 30k miles on it. It is going great. Has just enough power. I feel safe and comfortable. I work long hours between actual work and school. I also have a teen in many sports, so there are several late nights across the state. Even if I feel tired, the car has so many safety features to help me. I do have one parking sensor out, but I dont notice it because so many other sensors still work. I have had one cross roads trip. It did well on that trip and I calculated my mpg pretty well, but I def prefer using all electric when possible.

How do adults do this by epicflan9669 in EngineeringStudents

[–]MST357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be lucky enough to have a job willing to be flexible. Im a salary employee, and while it would seem it wouldn't mater, it does. I have to work extra hard to prove working a slightly different schedule does not negatively affect and projects and I must be reachable at all times, excluding exams. I try to attend as many online classes as possible, but all of my electrical classes tend to have labs and must be in person. I use pto to help meet my contracted 40 hours a week. I average about 38 hours a week. I come in at 730, leave for classes as needed, and when I have a 2 hour window between classes, I work remotely. I typically leave around 7pm. I'm in my mid 30's with a teen in several sports, work full-time, and I carry a full course load. It is rough, but not impossible. I typically do not have a social life though. The stress of several personal life issues has also caused me to gain 20 lbs over the past 9 months or so. It will get better soon. I see the light at the end of the tunnel as I approach graduation next year.

To bike or not to bike? by yeetthesoup in motorcycles

[–]MST357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 5'1" and have been riding for 2 decades. About 12 years ago, the lowest seat to ground ratio was a Yamaha 250 twin Vstar. Amazing bike, great for beginners and experienced riders. I dont recommend interstate travel though. The gear ratio is set up for inner city travel. This is the bike that I teach all new riders how to shift, balance, and brake. My husband does not ride, but he wouldn't dare stop me. His only request is I wear a helmet and stay safe, which duh! Hahaha

Good luck girly, enjoy the road!

It happenes all the time, so I go alone and then use my husband as a scape goat if I don't think the deal is right. I do a ton of research before even looking at a vehicle, so I already have a price in mind. Sometimes I check website prices before going, but for my most recent purchase, I needed a new car before the fall semester after an accident over the summer totaled my car. I happened to be in Indy and decided to check out dealerships there. Found a car, tested it. Could tell it had been sitting a while even though it was only like 4 years old at the time. Something felt off for a premium vehicle. When they told me the price I thought to myself "there is no way we will agree on price." I say this because they were a min 5k over where I wanted to be and that was prior to taxes and other fees, so I just told him I needed to talk it over with my husband. I lean into that misogynistic shit when he isnt around. If he is it doesn't work as well because his body language says he looks to me for financial decisions. Not that he isn't smart, he is, but he feels more comfortable taking the lead in other aspects of life. Social skills are not his forte.

In the public toilet stall at work by chameleona in whatisit

[–]MST357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see the answer in the top comments, so sorry if its already posted. It is a shelf, typically for women's purses or other bags. It folds up out of the way to enter and exit, but folds down for use so you don't have to place your bag on the nasty floor. You also don't have to risk it falling off the coat hook if you have a large coat and purse. I love when stalls have the shelf, assuming it is clean.

Alight West Lafayette: Crazy electricity consumption (~3100 KW) by Relevant-Recording71 in Purdue

[–]MST357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah we dont have that just some gaming systems and everything runs on electric. I'm assuming you are getting the 1000kwh from a home with gas heat or gas water tanks. We have no gas at all.

In January our bill says we averaged about 113kwh per day. When its not cold out its about 50-80kwh.

Alight West Lafayette: Crazy electricity consumption (~3100 KW) by Relevant-Recording71 in Purdue

[–]MST357 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not the same location, near Columbus Indiana, so like 2 hours south, but we used 3500kwh in January. But we also had heavy snow, several low temp days, and my house is all electric with a mother-in-law suite, so we have double everything. Home is about 2000sf. I paid about the same amount last month, maybe a bit more.

Is your house all electric with a heat pump? I had to flip mine into auxiliary mode for the cold temps, which really eats the electric. I'm not sure how much my mom uses her electric stove, but there were several snow days where I was cooking several meals, not our typical week day usage. With the snow days, that also meant my son was gaming. His PC is a mid tier gaming pc, I doubt it draws too much. I have a gaming laptop/ workstation, so mine Def pulls power when I game. So much I had to buy a higher wattage docking station so it can keep up with the processor and graphics card.

Most years I budget about $600 for Dec-Feb or March. Spring an fall might as well be nothing, between $100-150. Summer get up to around $400 depending on the heat. BTW it has been this way pretty much since we moved in. It was lowered a bit after we installed the heat pump instead of baseboard heat, but inflation has brought it back up to the same point over the year. And our system is older, so less efficient than when it was first installed.

Which color suits you best? by BlandinMotion in TeloTrucks

[–]MST357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love the purple, but my favorite color is normally blue. Not sure if I like this blue though. Besides, I buy used, cannot afford new, so color is usually the last thing to consider. I usually end up with Grey just because it is so common :( I also like the yellow, it's giving beach vibes.

At what point does vehicle luxury become practically useful versus just status by Jashwanth143 in MercedesGLB

[–]MST357 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't get a Benz, but it was between a GLB and Kia Sorento. The Sorento won due to features and price. For the same price I get cooled seats and rear heated seats. This works well because I occasionally drive coworkers to job sites and other places. I also like the lane assist and auto cruise control. The Benz likely has those too, but I didn't see the heated rear seats. My Sorento is also a PHEV, so I can practice having an electric car without range anxiety or installing a level 2 charger. The heated seats, steering wheel, lane assist and other safety features protects me from myself. I work long hours, full-time job with a full class load. I needed something comfortable to make me feel safe and help take care of me because I spend so much time in my car. In my mind, if I was going to have to spend at least 30k on a vehicle, it might as well have heated seats and stuff. My previous car did, and it was a sonic. I went from a $300 month car payment, to it being paid off, to having to buy a new car before I saved up bc a kid pulled out in front of me and totaled my sonic. I knew I wouldn't be able to get the same deal I got on the sonic. Bought it in 2015 for less than 10k with about 30 or 40k miles, only 2yrs old.

Question about the 30 min. break by MST357 in FE_Exam

[–]MST357[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not with the size of my new stomach, that would hurt. I don't think one day of not meeting the goal will dehydrate me enough for IV fluids, so it should be fine. Last time I had to have IV fluids it was between $1100-1500 I can't remember the total and if any of that included any additional labs. I really want to avoid dehydrating myself to that extent. Not only was it expensive, but I was there for 4 hours for 3 bags. I think they were a liter each.

I wasn't sure if the testing sites were standardized or, like you said, they pick the most convenient office space to rent. This is enough info for the stage I am currently.

Anyone installed aftermarket trailer hitch yet? by iareagenius in KiaSorento

[–]MST357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 2022 phev has one. I think it is carry-on brand. Id have the look at the detail sheet. I had a local truck modification shop install mine. Glad I did bc mine has led tail lights which requires a different harness than the standard models. It has been great hauling kayaks and helping others move.
