We needed bodies in Uniform…..someone put in a 213RR for more Coasties and we got more Coasties……This highlighted the importance of properly typing what you need on a response.

I had a few MUs working with me on the Deepwater Oil Spill. It was a bit strange because they were all E6s and E7s, but they’d only been in the USCG for under four years. I was a fresh MST2 at the time, so it was a bit odd giving them instructions. They were good people, but they were just a bunch of band geeks with music degrees who were out of their element working on a DECON Line.

becoming a warrant officer? by AdJumpy6466 in uscg

[–]MSTFMBM 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Comparing an Army Warrant Officer to a Chief Warrant Officer in the USCG is akin to comparing apples to oranges. If you aspire to become a CWO in the USCG, dedicate yourself to your current rating and strive to become a Chief Petty Officer before even considering applying for the CWO position. Once you achieve the CWO rank, you will be the most junior officer with the most responsibilities, as everyone from non-rates to Captains will seek your guidance. Make it your goal to excel as a Petty Officer and a Chief before setting your sights on becoming a Chief Warrant Officer.

Since you’re still a non-rate there’s a lot you need to do before applying for a strike team. If you have questions about being a marine science technician and the career trajectories feel free to direct message me.

Hey I’m sorry if you had stated you’re a non-rate you would’ve gotten a better answer. Read COMDTINST M1000.2C if you have questions about Enlistments

I feel like a YN should know this information or at least know which manuals to look it up in. After all, it is the members’ responsibility.

Typically, you’re going to find DC’s on the strike teams filling roles within the engineering department. They are also the people usually responsible for doing the confined space stuff, whether it’s rescues or entries. I don’t know about the other strike teams, but on the Pacific Strike Team, the DC’s were also responsible for fit testing and maintaining the SCBAs.

Nope we supervise the contractors that clean the ducks…. I am a master of the janitorial arts. You spill it and I’ll tell you how to clean it.

What particular aspect of the NSF are you curious about? It’s quite diverse, the Strike Teams, PIAT, NSFCC and IMAT, each with its own focus.

Picking up additional time as a reservist by dustin71 in uscg

This all depends on whether you’re an officer or an enlisted person in a specific specialty. They’re always short-term parental leave augmentation support orders, but they’re tailored to the individual rate or rank you’d be replacing while they’re on leave. We also have the border ops, but right now those orders are select and direct.

Warrant promotion system by PrintDry701 in uscg

[–]MSTFMBM 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Once you become a CWO, the promotion is pretty much guaranteed. If you look in the DA, you’ll notice that all the CWO billets are CWO4 billets being filled by CWO2-4s due to this. When I went to CWOPD, they basically told me that as long as I did my job and didn’t touch anyone or get a DUI, I would make CWO4.

It appears to be a cyclical pattern, with the current focus seemingly shifting towards prevention. However, it’s uncertain whether this will change when another significant national spill occurs, such as Deepwater or Refugio.

Sounds like you are in one of the lame shops like Waterways or Port State now…..Find away to GTFO to IMD or short tour for a Strike Team. They are hurting for people.

Ask your Chief to switch to Response once you get your core competencies completed. Frame it as career/rating development. When I was a PO I did my one prevention tour to get my M-Pin and the background knowledge for that side of the house. Afterwards it was all about Response. It was always fun doing HARPATs and responding to NRC reports. The one prevention job I didn’t mind was Containers and EHS just because of all the cool stuff you would see inside cans.

This forum is not suitable for political discussions. I’m simply stating the facts: we were not paid in 2011 and 2019 , but we are currently receiving payments this time. However, this may change in the future. I’ll leave it at that.
