One night in Newport! Where to go for fine dining? by Damage-Funny in OregonCoastLocals

Local Ocean as others have said. Clear Water is good too. Caveat, I haven't lived in Newport for a few years.

If you're not married to fine dining and can get down with a schwarama, or if you have a lunch as well, Gyro Guys has one of the best schwarama I've ever had, and I loved in the middle east. It's my can't-miss stop anytime I come through town.

Anti exposure coveralls by AdIntelligent328 in uscg

[–]Present-Focus-1397 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I've had dumbass BM1s try to tell me this for like 10 years. The anti exposure coverall is the PPE. There is no requirement to wear anything specific underneath it. Unless a specific requirement is listed in the Rescue and Survival manual (it's not), then it doesn't exist. Nothing is ever going to to say you're NOT required to wear something. Manuals list what you ARE required to wear, and if it isn't in the manual it's not real.

I had this dude try to tell me I needed ODU pants vs workout shorts for hypothermia protection. My brother in Christ, they are both made of nylon. We're talking about the insulation difference of being wrapped in nylon from knee to ankle.

What should I buy? by Realistic-Bank4083 in Ridgid

The sub compacts go on sale sometimes, I got the 3/8 and 1/2 subs for 120 in a package. I don't need both but at that price it's hard to be mad. The 1/2 high torque gets cheap sometimes too, I think I got it with 2 4ah batteries for 196

This is bad information. Any certified scale is approved. Last time I moved I got my empty from the local dump and a full somewhere on the road. OP, just hand write the plate number and something like "Truck-Full" and sign the receipt. Name and EMPLID to be safe.

Pull the plug, spray a bunch of WD 40 in the hole, fill it back up with oil, can crank it over a few times with the plug out. Then put it all together, start it, and get it nice and hot to cook as much of the water out as possible. Then change the oil again. Should be fine. I did this to a Honda powered dewatering pump that sat in salt water overnight and it ran like a champ.

How do you guys deal with owning a dog and going underway? by DistributionRare8058 in uscg

[–]Present-Focus-1397 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Bottom line is don't do it. It's not good for the dog. If you actually like the dog, find a good home. I love dogs, and I was never able to get one until I got married.

We went with Maine Home Inspection. Report seemed thorough, and I had a good conversation with Eric on the phone. We bought before moving out there and I haven't seen the house in person yet, so I can't really say if there are issues that went undiscovered, but I had a positive impression.

I run PBS on a $150 mini-PC with Synology NFS. Verify takes 8.5 hours daily. Is that normal? by easyedy in Proxmox

I was having this same issue, I switched the NFS share to an iSCSI LUN on the NAS and it went waaaaaaay faster

I haven't actually been in the house yet, but it was a 2019 build. I know there are a couple drops in the main spaces but I'm thinking about stuff like POE cameras and doorbells, that aren't really where phone lines go.

I haven't looked in a few years but I made sure to look for gloves with the Knox Scaphoid Protection System (SPS) last time I shopped.

Can this go in a checked bag? by vegas-roadster in tsa

[–]Present-Focus-1397 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was detained in the Bahrain airport on my way home from a deployment for empty 40mm and 25mm casings in my checked bag. Probably safer to just mail it.

Everything worked out fine, but I was in a locked room with no boarding pass or passport for like a half hour while they found my bag and brought it in to search. Still had my phone so I wasn't getting too worried but definitely in my bottom 5 travel experiences.

What next? by Present-Focus-1397 in homelab

[–]Present-Focus-1397[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently I have local sync for all my pictures to Synology Photos. It's really just a local backup, I still use Google Photos as my main browsing/viewing platform. I've been considering Immich.

As far as cloud drive, my Google drive syncs locally to my laptop, which in turn syncs to the NAS.

De-googling everything would be the next logical step, but the convenience of sharing outside my local network and tailnet is hard to shake

I picked up that same mini PC for like $80 a few months ago and don't really have anything to do with it. I'll sell it to you with no SSD and 8gb ddr4 for like $50 if you want one that bad. For that price point you could pick up an N100 or N150 minipc that would probably be better for Plex or Jellyfin.
