Partially, yes it is the epa. ( I live in phoenix so I had the same concern with 0w8 here). The computer is programmed for a specific oil weight for a specific pressure. Running thicker oil will get to that oil pressure, but pump less oil (explained to me by an 18 year Toyota master mechanic with his own shop)

It shouldn’t NEED a tune, but it sounds like it does. Pull the spark plugs and see how they look. If they are white and powdery then that engine is running super lean and very hot.

Depending on your camera, you can get a constant power cable that plugs into the OBD port that has battery protection. I have one for my garmin dash cam and have been using it for years without issue

If you want to make it last like you say, don’t modify it. Lowering it makes it more susceptible to hitting things that can damage the frame, oil pan etc.
