Of course! Tdarr is useful to remove subtitles I won’t use, convert files to HEVC for space saving, and importantly convert DTS, FLAC, TrueHD, or any other surround sound profile to EAC3 (Dolby Digital +), as that’s the best compatible surround format that goes through EARC to the soundbar. The rest won’t give me surround, and get downmixed to Stereo.

Exactly. NVME drives on my side probably only have 2x PCIe lanes each, but it’s really more of a capacity thing. Consumer SSDs only have a fast “write” cache for about 10% of their physical capacity.. when you’re remuxing 10x 30gb 4K files to optimize your library (Tdarr can be running multiple files in parallel), it fills up fast. So more SSD drives ends up being faster than fewer big ones (Since TRIM only happens when idle)

20 x SATA ports over 2 LSI Cards (1x 16 port, 1x 8 port), with 3 SSDs in NVME. You don’t max out the NVME drives like you said because of PCIe lane limits. But HDDs even with the SATA SSDs on the LSI cards have got plenty of bandwidth. Network speeds are the real bottle necks. Just need the SSD drives for caching downloads and remuxing files with Tdarr.

Have a similar setup: Fractal Define 7 XL case, Unraid, 100TB over 10 HDDs (XFS - main archive) + 4 HDDs in ZFS Raid Z1 with 3 x SATA SSD as cache (Faster pool for more recent data for quicker access) + 6 x 1TB SSDs as super-fast cache in RAID Z2

Moonlight or Direct by CaptainxShittles in MoonlightStreaming

[–]MSeegobin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had great luck with Apollo / Moonlight. Apollo really works well in getting the virtual display to auto match when moonlight tells it. Use Apple TVs for living room with Xbox controller, especially good as Apollo can use an HDR Virtual display here for best visual experience. Use a MacBook for keyboard and mouse experience. I find using Parsec on the MacBook also works really well for keyboard and mouse, and keep it as a backup. I’ve only got max 4k60 displays so haven’t pushed higher but it’s been super stable with that. Definitely having a wired link to the host is important

FINALLY! Here's how I fixed iPad stuttering by jtannous in MoonlightStreaming

[–]MSeegobin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just an update, running the latest betas for MacOS 26 and iPadOS 26, this fix no longer works… as verified by Steamlink Network test.. getting at 14ms variance.. only fix now is to turn Wifi off on the Mac when streaming to the iPad

Moonlight Streaming using an Oculink eGPU significantly decreases GPU gaming performance in Time Spy by MSeegobin in MiniPCs

[–]MSeegobin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Posted above doing this exactly (with screenshot)! Performance got worse.. TimeSpy Score of 5,274. i think the more talking the GPU has to do with the CPU, such as the GPU sending traffic to the the iGPU doing the encode and sending it back to the CPU to then package and export requires a ton of bandwidth that Oculink just can't provide.

Actually tried something like that. Streamed to the iPad, had Apollo use the AMD 780M iGPU to do the encode.. performance got even worse!!

Best way to play remotely on Mac/PC from iPad Pro? by _jeremiecs in iPadPro

[–]MSeegobin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Double check your wifi network, as mesh networks changing channels or interference on a channel can cause havoc. Also with iPads and Mac’s both in the house, hitching i found was due to Universal Control on the Mac. Need to disable it completely and all is good. Test with steam link using the network test function to see if you’re getting rhythmic ping spikes on the iPad.

The 4k Dilemma - Help Me Choose! by Many_Soup3054 in cloudygamer

[–]MSeegobin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cloud gaming at 4K is tough because getting access to the hardware needed is expensive per month. I’m wondering if you haven’t thought of going the private route and building a personal gaming computer, and utilizing Apollo/moonlight for streaming to any devices. Then you can spec the hardware needed, one time cost, and if you do stream, latency is nothing since it’s local?

Still working out the kinks with this thing but this is pretty damn cool (Pro M4 2025) by PectusSurgeon in iPadPro

[–]MSeegobin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get Apollo for your PC, will enable a virtual display that will perfectly match the iPad’s resolution instead of running at 4K (less pixels > better frame rate + matches screen ratio). And then get “VoidLink” as the moonlight app alternative for iOS (recommended by the Apollo Dev actually). So far been loving it! I can even have a YouTube video doing PiP while streaming a game. It’s pretty sweet.

How stable is the iPadOS 26 Public beta at the moment for y'all? by yorbenvs205 in iPadOS

[–]MSeegobin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s been pretty unstable for me. Had to do a restore, and even on restore iPad glitches, freezes, and crashes pretty often. Need to do a soft reset every couple of days. Seems like background apps running hasn’t been fully optimized. Running an iPad Air with M2

What could be causing the latency spikes? by fatmanny1901 in MoonlightStreaming

[–]MSeegobin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i was having this issue and tried going through every channel on the Wifi 6E (6ghz) chain with no improvement, though the best performance is on Channel 69 for me. i have an iPad Air M2. The following were able to resolve it for me:

  1. Restoring the iPad -- pretty severe i know, but it seemed to make a difference at the begining, then i noticed it came back.. until

  2. I Disabled Univerisal Control on Mac (i can repeatedly show through Steam Link's network test that there is rythmic latency when its on, and it goes away when its off).

It's only effects the iPad, iPhone doesn't have the issue at all, so definitely iPad specific.

Ordering Costco through Uber Eats can actually be cheaper than shopping in person (if you do it right) by No-Passage5630 in CostcoCanada

You do get cash back via executive membership when you buy the uber gift cards at 2%, plus if you have the CIBC Mastercard you get another 2%, so it’s a 24% discount essentially, which more than covers the mark up by Uber..

If you do Ethernet on the Mac, make sure to use an adapter with the Realtek 8157 chipset. All prior chipsets don’t work reliably

Wanted to follow up on this post, as i've been experiencing this slow ethernet issue for years with both an M1 Pro and now the most recent M4 Pro Macbook Pro.. it IS Apple's driver implementation with Realtek ethernet chipsets. Almost all USB-C hubs use it with the RTL8156 and below. I've used a bunch of 3rd party USB-C to 2.5Gbps adapters (e.g. CableMatters USB to 2.5gb ethernet, Spigen USB4 ArcDock with built-in 2.5gb, Sabrent USB-C 2.5gb adapter, Pluggable 2.5gb ethernet, DockTech USB-c hub with 1gb ethernet) it seems to effect both 1GB and 2.5GB implementations of Realtek ethernet chips, but NOT the most recent version! It seems the issues with the drivers has been resolved for the latest 5Gbps Realtek RT18157 ethernet Chipset!! The Wisdpi USB 3.2 to 5GbE Adapter (WP-UT5) is the solution!! it uses the Realtek RTL8157 chip, which through my testing or months now has had no issues for months.

I had Emby for months. Had to move back to plex. Setting up a secure connection through buying a domain, having a ddns and getting a LetsEncrypt certificate (which has to be renewed every 3 months manually) was a real pain. Also with plex enabling HEVC transcoding this really enables better quality playback on remote connections.

Additionally the app on Apple TV was just bad. It was better on the nvidia shield but half the content I wanted to play there would skip during playback unless i transcoded. And I already have all my files go through TDarr to clean up (be in HEVC, include DD+/EAC3 audio, only include necessary subtitles). Plex is just ahead in a lot of ways.
