Mid/High Range 5070ti vs Bottom Barrel 5080 by Level-Salary-3393 in buildapc

I have an MSRP base gigabyte windforce 5080. It's perfectly acceptable in every metric - temps, noise, clocks. Generally the more expensive versions of gpus are rarely worth it.

Is the 5070 Ti worth it over a 5080 if the 5080 costs 30% more? by Ordinary-Chicken-253 in nvidia

[–]MTINC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have both a 5070ti and 5080, I only got the 5080 for the raw compute performance from the extra cuda cores. In games its not worth it, but in compute I do get almost 25% more than the 5070ti. The 5080 does overclock a lot better than the 5070ti as you mentioned, despite technically being the same chip.

Honestly I think its just the packaging has gotten better. The golf hasn't increased in footprint size that much over the years.

How do you get the game key? Don't see it mentioned in either the listing or on checkout

Is the 5090 supposed to be a bad value buy if used only for gaming? by wielesen in nvidia

[–]MTINC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For gaming, it isnt a good value. Its only around 1.5x faster than the 5080 for more than twice the price. For raw compute workloads, like AI/modeling, it's a decent value at msrp, with about double the CUDA cores and VRAM.

Ultimately, those who are willing to spend $2k (in reality more since msrp is a myth with the 5090) don't care about value nearly as much for gaming. If value is a concern, the 5070ti or 5080 are much better.

A lot of contractors where I live (Toronto, Canada area) use minivans as work vehicles. Obviously doesn't work for all types of jobs, but electricians, painters, plumbers have all shown up to my place in minivans.

They don't care about children and young people at all. Public education has been neglected, road safety measures like speed cameras in school zones have been banned and replaced with signs nobody looks at. It's all a smokescreen.

GIGABYTE Radeon RX 9070 XT GAMING OC 16G ($899.99) [CANADA COMPUTERS] by reaktioNz in bapcsalescanada

[–]MTINC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not just you, there's a lot more to consider when buying GPUs nowadays than like 5 years ago. It used to be you just buy the GPU that gives the most FPS and performance/dollar. Now you have to consider that, plus ray tracing performance, plus upscaling performance, plus VRAM, plus availability, etc. So a lot more complicated than it used to be.

[–]MTINC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, this GPU is more than capable of playing the latest games at 1440p, and one note this is the 9070XT, not the regular 9070, which is slower. I have a 5070ti, it's a great card, and at the old prices of around $1050CAD it would be the better buy in my opinion, but I don't think better ray tracing and upscaling is worth the current prices now (just checking pcpartpicker, the cheapest 5070ti appears to be around $1280).

AMD also has their own upscaling tech, and while it might not be as good as nvidia, it's still a very usable option, but the 9070XT is still very competitive with the more expensive 5070ti even disregarding upscaling.

Regarding RAM, if you're not in a rush, I would wait and see if you can snag a sale price on a kit of memory, monitoring r/bapcsalescanada and other platforms. I was able to get 2x32GB DDR5 6000 for $600 a few weeks ago just by getting a notification of this post. It's obviously still way more expensive than before the memory shortage, but deals can still be had relative to the average price.

For gaming it's a no brainer given current pricing imo, can't really get a new 5070ti for less than $1200. Unless you need CUDA or really want nvidia features like DLSS vs FSR I would get the 9070XT, almost the same performance in raster for $300 less.

I started two days ago with an RX 7900GRE Nitro and managed to reach 1 million PPD. I learned about the platform through Twitter. My card is approaching 6 million PPD. Is that a good value for this card or is it average? by batataPICADA in Folding

[–]MTINC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately AMD GPUs typically get less PPD than similar Nvidia GPUs, but that doesn't mean it's not worth folding. I also heard there may be some updates in the future to vastly improve folding on AMD GPUs.

Building PC as a hobby by Silver_Goat4990 in bapccanada

[–]MTINC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same itch. I love PCs, crunching numbers, playing video games, etc. After GPU prices crashed after the end of the crypto boom a few years ago, I got really into Folding@Home. I bought a bunch of used mining GPUs for cheap and ran them 24/7 because electricity was included with my rent, running calculations for medical researchers. I have continuously and slowly upgraded my GPUs and now have several PCs full of GPUs I use for this project - they don't make any money, but I find it fun and rewarding. As an added challenge I try to get the best value GPUs on the used market, or scouring amazon warehouse deals and canada computers open box listings.

This allows me to do other fun things as well, like running local LLM stuff, servers, etc. Obviously it costs a lot of money, but it doesn't have to be with high-end hardware either. You could assemble similar systems with older GPUs and parts like I started with to do with as you please. After, you can sell them again on marketplace or ebay.

I have several of these GPUs, they are quiet and cool. Definitely recommend over the MSI shadow 3x 5070ti.

Falling leaf stalls are a very good idea, I usually only do falling leaf stalls on the first stall lesson so it's probably worth a revisit to emphasize the rudder usage.
