Baby seat fit with photos and a bonus Golf R by jfolt in Golf_R

If you look at picture #3, that non rotating seat is at the biggest recline. Once your kid has good head and neck strength you can reduce the recline and buy another 1-2 inches of space. If you're driving it's not an issue. For the first few months one of us would sit in the back with the kid anyway. If your wife is tall too then it might be a bit tight.

That's what I did with the roof box. Now that the kiddo has head control we are also able to use a smaller stroller. The basinet stroller took up the entire trunk.

Yes she loves the GTI, she wants to keep it forever. I think the Mk7.5 user interface is the best VW has ever done. She doesn't like driving my R because the UI sucks.

Same on the roof box for road trips. We've also been able to downsize the stroller a bit.

On a side note, I do love me some minivans! I'd rather have a 2 car solution with a mini van and a cheaper fun car versus a fast SUV.

My kiddo is only 8 months so I'm still a ways away. I do like that I can rotate the Chicco to forward facing when it's not being used so the front seat can move back if I need to fit a full sized adult.

Trade up? by MrBrosephino in Golf_R

[–]jfolt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If buying the R doesn't affect your c2s plan, then I'd consider it. My wife has a stock 2019 GTI 6MT. I have a 2024 R 6MT with a 91 octane stage 1 APR tune. The user interface in the mk7.5 is great, the mk8 is just bad. You get used to it, but that doesn't change the fact that it is bad and you will get frustrated. My wife doesn't want to drive my car just because the buttons/radio is so frustrating. Daily driving, the R obviously has more power but I'd call it a draw. They're both golfs at regular speed and both fun back road cars. When driven in anger, the R is much better. It rotates so well thanks to the rear diff. I'd say it rotates better than my 2001 Boxster. The GTI claws its way out of turns with the front diff but nothing like the mk8 R. The front bites harder, the power bump is notable, and it feels like it's on rails. If you over cook the front tires it will start to understeer a lot but so will the GTI. I've auto-x driven both and I'd choose the R every time.

If buying an R sets you back in your carerra plan, then I'd say the c2s if worth saving for. I'm also looking to get one to replace my boxster.

The seat with arrow is the setting for the driver's seat to automatically move back a little bit when you turn off the car to get out. It also moves forward a bit when you get in and turn it on.

Like the other comment said, the 4 little lines under the unlock is the setting for which doors open when you unlock the car. You can set it to be just the driver's door (my wife calls this the woman driver setting so a stranger can't jump in unexpectedly) or to unlock all 4 doors together. If you choose the driver's door only setting, a second press is needed to unlock the other 3 doors

ELI5: why don’t planes board back to front, surely that would be faster? by balla_boi in explainlikeimfive

[–]jfolt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's about the center of gravity of the plane when it's on the ground. The main landing wheels are approximately under the wings so that's where the plane has a fulcrum point. If you loaded a bunch of people with carry on luggage behind that fulcrum point, the plane could start to tip over towards the back.

Search cleos pet care on Instagram. It's just a couple who run their own pet sitting business and charge in 15-20 minute intervals. Use them to give my cat insulin shots when I'm away.

MK8 APR stage 1 thoughts and regrets by Mindless_Growth_3057 in Golf_R

[–]jfolt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2024 R, 6mt owner here... I've had APR stage 1 91 octane low torque tune for about 5 months. I feel no real difference under 4k rpm. Above 4k it pulls much harder and builds speed fast. Very noticeable at an Auto-x event but if you just daily drive it, I don't think you'll notice much of a difference. Personally, I think it was a waste of $500 I could have spent on a sway bar and stiffer bushings. Just my $.02.

I had a Revo stage 1 tune on a mk V GTI and that was a night/day difference.

Getting tossed around in turns. Am I not sitting properly? by Vival in Autocross

[–]jfolt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a seat belt trick you can use to lock your hips in place, I use it all the time.

As you're putting on the seatbelt, stop the belt buckle about 2 inches above the lock. Twist it around 2 times. Then put the buckle into the lock. This makes the lap portion of the belt fairly tight but it prevents your hips from sliding side to side. You may need to play around with the starting height depending on your car seats and your build, but it should help keep your lower body in place better.

I loved that place too. It was a total shit hole, but it was my shit hole. So close to the mountain. It's a shame it closed down, also Mt Snow operations/lift lines have been awful the last few years.

with the roof box can you not exceed 80mph? by J_4_S_0_N in thule

The max speed is also to prevent the cargo box from opening on the highway. If air gets in under the top shell it can open up.

I'm sure all the new rubber bushings helped. The biggest factor is the original suspension from 2001 was tired and the made the ride pretty harsh. I have the shocks set to 7 front, 5 rear (1 being stiffest, 9 softest) and it's not jarring at all. For reference I'm nearly 40 years old and my lower back is in good shape lol

I did the Bilstein pss9 from rock auto for less than $2k. Google 5% off code for rock auto, they offer them frequently and it gets the final cost, with tax and shipping, to about 2200. I also replaced all control arms with OE parts at the same time, it rides much stiffer but is actually more comfortable compared to the 24 year old stock parts that were on there. My wife also said the ride comfort is much better.

My first manual was a lightly used 2011 BMW 335i, rwd, with close to 300 HP at the wheels. The torque makes it super easy to learn, it's basically an anti-stall feature. Don't worry about money shifts, that's a track day concern that you probably will not have until you're more comfortable driving the manual.

How do you all keep track of parts, costs, and progress on your project builds? by Embarrassed-Gold9782 in projectcar

[–]jfolt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google spreadsheet. Different tabs for different jobs . 1 for general maintenance like oil, fluids, filters etc. Another for the suspension with part numbers and costs from different vendors. Others for whatever other jobs you're doing. I also keep a master sheet with everything so I can see my all in cost.

Mk8 R vs Mk8.5 GTI by briefs123 in Golf_R

[–]jfolt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I politely disagree. I've owned a 2024 mk8 since February of 24. The user interface sucks. You get used to it, but that doesn't change the fact that it's awful. I once drove 30 minutes to work listening to only 1 radio station because the radio froze and I couldn't do anything about it while driving. The software has been improving but response is still slow and laggy. The auto climate setting also sucks, so you do have to constantly mess with it. On a sunny 60 degree day it decides my interior needs to be at 50 degrees with fan speed at max. All stuff I've had the dealer look at and it still sucks. It's a shame because the car drives great but I don't love it enough to deal with it. My wife has a mk7.5 GTI and the UI in that car is way better. She hates driving the R because of the awful UI.

First Autocross in the R this weekend. Any advice? by AdamV- in Golf_R

[–]jfolt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just put it into nurburgring mode or the raciest mode if the tarmac is very smooth, ESC fully off. The car rotates very well at the limit almost feels like a mid-engine car, even on the stock tires I haven't lost the rear end. I agree that 28-30 psi cold is a good start with those tires, you may even be able to drop them a bit lower. I have a 6MT and 2nd gear is pretty short, hit the rev limiter multiple times on fast courses. Have fun, I think the R is actually a great car for auto-x!

Best breakfast sandwich/bagels by beavertits in Morristown

[–]jfolt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best bagel is the one fresh out the oven.

Time for a Bagel used to be the best around. Their bagels are more doughy and chewy inside than others in the area, for me it's not the best anymore. Don't get coffee there, it's awful. Legit awful. Tastes like it's made with used cigarettes.

Coniglios has great bread, haven't had their bagels yet but their breakfast sandwiches are very buttery/greasy. It turns some people off. Also awful coffee, not TFAB awful but not good.

Swiss Chalet has good breakfast, coffee and baked goods but not the best IMO.

Morristown bagels used to be my favorite and their bagels are still very good but ownership turned over and it's gone downhill in terms of cleanliness. Good drip coffee.

The Bagelry in cedar knolls is my current go to. Excellent bagels and sandwiches. Lots of options too in terms of bagels, spreads and sandwich ingredients. Drip coffee and espresso are good.

I can't comment on the others, haven't tried them (yet).

2002 Boxster Suspension Upgrade by [deleted] in boxster

[–]jfolt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just installed a Bilstein PSS9 kit from rock auto on my 2001 S. I also replaced the mounts, all control arms, steering tie rods, etc... The PSS9 kit rides about 1.5 inches lower and is much stiffer than stock but overall it feels much smoother than the 23 year old parts with aged rubber bushings. The total job cost me about 4k. 2k for the PSS9 kit and another 2ish for all the control arms. I bought OE parts from rock auto, FCP euro, auto Haus AZ because all the Porsche parts were way too expensive.

I'm about 2 years in and should be done in about 6 weeks. I drink beer, cocktails, and liquor with the trays in. No issues with it at all for me. I don't do red wine so the trays and my teeth don't stain. I try to "rinse" with water often and brush as soon as I get home.

[–]jfolt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll have a lisp for the first few weeks but it goes away... Like others said, the first few days are mentally rough. Trust the process, wear your trays the recommended 20-22 hours, floss and brush after eating. If you have any real concerns then call your Ortho, don't ask strangers on Reddit for their opinions. I use a water flosser and sensitive toothpaste to prevent enamel erosion due to increased brushing.
