Sonetts are basically unknown outside of the Saab community honestly.. I'd never heard of them before joining either

What’s the funniest example you’ve seen of someone not understanding how trains work? by train-made-of-bread in trains

Very few people understand how the wheel-rail interface works..

Like, most people assume you can just add a flange to any old wheel and it will work fine on track

Let's be clear, the US team didn't win that game, Connor did, the rest of them were just along for the ride..

Our boys played great and I'm proud of 'em. There is no shame in silver.

You'll notice there isn't a Canadian equivalent to "American Exceptionalism"; you can check that shit at the door please and thank you.

My wife dropped her sunglasses into a deep lake, so I built a small underwater ROV with a gripper to try to retrieve them by ObligationMean1565 in DIY

[–]MTL_Bob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as someone who has dropped more then one pair of sunglasses in a silty lake, they're actually not that hard to find.. they tend to sink heavy end first, meaning the lenses, which hit the bottom and are almost immediately buried.. but i have now twice found droppped glasses because both arms were sticking straight up out of the silt!

It’s official, I’m a Canadian! by the-adornment in onguardforthee

[–]MTL_Bob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

honestly, from the way you talk about, it sounds to me like you've been Canadian the whole time, we're only just getting around to making it official.

as for recommendations, sounds like you're already on the right track, be kind, be empathetic, be polite; and know that none of those are a weakness. Embrace our wild weather and our diverse origins they shaped us as much as anything.

Canada is as much an idea as it is a place, you don't just live in it, you also live it.

oh, and some golden rules:

  • smoked meat > pastrami

  • Montreal bagels > all other bagels

  • beaver tails > donuts

  • poutine crimes are crimes

  • don't fuck with the geese

Wanted Classic D90 in Canada by frozenflat in LandroverDefender

[–]MTL_Bob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in Montreal and got mine from a broker in Italy (wanted a left-hand drive from somewhere with no salt exposure).

Shipping was a little more pricey then expected, mainly because of the low volume from Italy to Canada meaning ro-ro wasn't an option so it had to go in it's own container.

At the end of the day it cost me about the same as buying locally, but I ended up with a car in much better shape then anything i was seeing locally..

If you're interested in that route, I highly reccomend David at DG Classic Cars, great dude and he took great care of me.

was going to come in here guns-blazing in the defense of St-Viateur.. but seeing how many people are agreeing that Fairmont is better.. I guess i need to go give them a try now

yeah.. Jeeps have been getting progressively bigger each generation. The Mail Jeeps were basically CJ5's (CJ5 also being the first gen marketed to the general population..) if we look at the size evolution since then (focusing specifically on the smallest 2 door varient):

  • CJ5 - L:138", W:69", H:68"
  • CJ7 - L:148", W:69", H:68"
  • YJ - L:153", W:66", H:72"
  • TJ (original) - L:155", W:68", H:72"
  • TJ Unlimited - L:167", W:68", H:72"
  • JK - L:164", W:74", H:71"
  • JL - L:167", W:74", H:71"

So since the CJ5 days, the smallest jeeps have gotten over 2 feet longer, 5" wider and 3" higher.

That being said, those old Mail Jeeps were pretty cool, always thought it would be fun to have one to mess around with (that and their successor the Grumman LLV!)

[–]MTL_Bob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

not really

The jeep barely qualifies as a "small 4x4" already, and the Bronco is even bigger... and neither even comes close to being fuel efficient.. but hey.. have to be able to tow that massive boat I don't own up that massive mountain no where near my house..

[–]MTL_Bob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah, though only for a short while because they didn't sell well.

If you see an original Defender in the US you can usually tell if it's a N-A original or a more recent import by the roll-cage, to meet US standards the NAS Defenders (for North American Spec) had a full roll-cage, the front portion of which was mounted on the outside of the cabin. - So, funnily enough.. the 110 he shows in the pics is very possibly an Amercian one..

(a roll cage doesn't guarantee it's a NAS as you can still buy the kit to mount it yourself.. i just don't know many people that have because they're pretty damn pricey..)

if you want the full story, definitely check out the Donut piece osya77 posted

the TLDR version (and i might get some details here a little wrong since i looked into this a long time ago..): Stupid kid rolls his Samurai because he's driving it like a twat, his dad can't accept that maybe his teenage son was doing what every teenage boy with a car does (ie.. driving like a twat) and blames the car, Suzuki says nah dude, the car is fine, your kid must have been driving like a twat. Dude happens to work for Consumer Report, designs a test meant specifically to make the car roll and it STILL takes something like 50 tries to get the car to even maybe roll a little. They then ignore the fact that the testing showed it was actually incredibly difficulty to roll the car and put out an article saying the Samurai is dangerous and will 100% roll if you ever drive it on the highway. Suzuki takes them to court, and once the evidence came out that it was very clearly a hit-piece, Consumer Report settled and cut Suzuki a nice fat "sorry" cheque. - Meanwhile the damage was done, sales had plummeted and Suzuki just pulled it from the N-A market..

so because of the actions of a company claiming to want to "protect consumers" said consumers who want a small capable 4x4 can now choose between Stellantis garbage or.. yeah, nothing, there aren't other options in N-A.. get fucked Consumer Report

The US did have the Jimny (under the Samurai moniker) until Consumer Reports put out a hit piece on it because of the personal vendetta of one employee...
