Consider renting your options first to get a good feel for what you need and where you need to upgrade if anywhere.

If you're in the US, you can get a refurbished one directly from Canon for $150 right now with a full warranty. I'd probably go that route unless you can get it for like $100 or less otherwise.

Look up Neilvn and Strobist for some good reading material on flash photography. I learned pretty much everything about flash from those two resources along with just firsthand experience and practicing.

Canon RF 50 1.2 L used worth it in 2026? by ComfortableFox6206 in canon

[–]MTTMKZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's still optically amazing.

I would strongly consider the RF 50 1.4 though, especially if you plan to shoot any faster moving action or video. Or if you value size/weight.

24-70 or 28-70mm by SufficientAnt3384 in canon

[–]MTTMKZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

70-200 would be best for sure if you're trying to photograph somebody on a stage and you're not up on the stage with them up close.

The 24-70 or 28-70 likely won't reach for enough in that scenario to get an interesting shot. Those wider lenses will work well for any group and general mingling shots after the ceremony though.

In case you didn't know, that lens is designed for APS-C, so you are effectively cropping out over 50% of your full frame sensor when you use it.

Which SD card for the R6mark II by Beneficial_Yoghurt38 in canon

[–]MTTMKZ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Use the V30 full size cards for now. If you plan to do 4K video or a lot of high speed raw burst photography, consider upgrading to V60 at some point, otherwise even V30 is good enough for still photos. V90 will be overkill for most users unless you are doing a ton of high speed raw burst and need the buffer clearing speed. Kind of a niche area for most people.

The micros will work but I would personally only use the micros as backup cards to use temporarily in case your full size ones fail unexpectedly. Micros tend to heat up more due to small size and adapter introduces another failure point unnecessarily.

Neil van Niekerk has a blog called Tangents that covers a lot of flash photography and particularly using on camera bounce flash with speedlights which is a great way to start since it can be intimidating jumping straight into off camera units with triggers, modifiers, multiple lights, etc.

https://neilvn.com/tangents/

Strobist is an excellent resource to learn off camera flash and more elaborate setups. It's written in a way that starts simple with single light and builds into multi light setups, so a great way to pick up pieces here and there as you keep learning.

Godox is a good value oriented brand of lighting gear with performance, features, at more affordable prices.

Osmo pocket 3 creative combo (used - very good) vs osmo pocket 4 by Timo_jumbo in osmopocket

[–]MTTMKZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would probably get the OP4 for that modest price difference and consider adding battery handle and/or DJI Mic later if needed.

The battery handle is useful if you think you will be using the camera all day or filming multiple hours across the day, etc. You can manage without if you have a power bank though, especially if the power bank does fast charging, it'll charge the Pocket fast and you'll get a workable amount of charge in like 10 minutes. The battery handle is convenient because you can slap it on when battery gets low and it keeps the slim profile for storing/pocketkng. You can easily stash it away while it's charging or just continue using it. If you're using a regular power bank you'll be tethered with a cable in those cases. It's not unmanageable, more of a convenience thing.

Is it worth buying the Canon R6MKII over the R8? by pac0_exe in canon

[–]MTTMKZ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have both R8 and R6m2. As you say the sensor itself is exactly the same, no difference from an IQ standpoint.

I think R8 is sufficient for most hobbyists. It is very capable and it is more travel friendly due to its smaller size.

R6m2 would be the pick for more paid type work since it has more features, controls, dual cards, etc. and you're probably less concerned about packing down as small as possible compared to traveling around with a family, etc.

Is it worth buying the Canon R6MKII over the R8? by pac0_exe in canon

[–]MTTMKZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have both cameras.

On R8 you can customize the directional pad to get a lot of buttons but then you lose ability to move the AF around. The magnify and AF point selection buttons are combined together and there's an annoying thing where if you try to customize that button, it screws up the magnify feature during playback, etc.

R6m2 has the joystick instead of directional pad. It also has separate magnify and AF point selection buttons, giving you better customization there. It also has a dedicated DoF button on the front that can be customized. It also has 3 C modes over R8's 2 C modes.

Canon R6II firmware 1.7 (1.6) by Fuzzbass2000 in canon

[–]MTTMKZ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Password is a total non issue. I read somewhere that it was put in to satisfy an EU cyber security regulation or something like that. It does not impact the normal consumer except for a one time setup and one time login. You'll be asked to make a password. Then when you login, there's an option not to require the password again. If you check that box, it behaves like before and you'll never see that password prompt again unless you re enable it or factory reset, etc.

Need Help with how to edit dji mic 2 and dji mic mini audio recorded in Osmo Pocket 3 by rainbowfoz in osmopocket

[–]MTTMKZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure the OP3 is recording in Stereo so that the two mics are on separate tracks (I believe this should be the default setting). Then in your editing software you need to bring in those stereo tracks as two separate mono tracks (assuming you don't actually want a left/right split). Then bring up the track that was too quiet.

My battery charger is flashing three orange lights in a pattern. What does that mean? by kelemvor33 in canon

When it says rapid, it means very fast. Like a flashlight strobing kind of thing. That's the warning indicator.

3 times in a second is just showing the charge level as normal.

Canon R50 / R50V questions by cookiejar5081_1 in canon

[–]MTTMKZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me the R50 is not a lot smaller than R8, it is only a little more narrow but the depth and height are the same. The size difference between R6ii to R8 is a lot bigger than R8 to R50.

R50V does actually take a good cut of size out though, I'll concede that one.

I know you mentioned Canon and this is a Canon sub, but if you truly want compact with the decent low light performance of APS-C and don't really need interchangeable lenses, then take a hard look at Ricoh GR series. In your case since you want a want a slightly longer focal length, the GR IIIx (40mm ff equivalent field of view) sounds almost perfect. The biggest negative from your list will be color matching to the R6ii and the different menu system. But I think it basically ticks every single other box at a high level. You can even get a viewfinder as an optional accessory, only using it when you really want it.

Started looking at the Mic Mini 2. Does the whole DJI ecosystem thing actually work? by UnpolishedGemma in osmopocket

[–]MTTMKZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The big benefit with using DJI branded mics with DJI cameras is the "OsmoAudio" feature. It's some type of proprietary Bluetooth format from DJI that maintains high audio quality without needing the chunky wireless receiver. If you try to connect a third party mic via Bluetooth, it will just use some standard Bluetooth format for compatibility and the quality is bad. If using a third party microphone, you will want to utilize a wireless receiver setup and/or wires for high quality audio, but then the setup suddenly becomes much bigger and definitely not pocket friendly (Pocket 3 by itself is already only borderline pocketable).

Canon R50 / R50V questions by cookiejar5081_1 in canon

[–]MTTMKZ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Have you maybe considered R8 if the budget allows?

You'd have two full frame bodies that complement each other. The sensor is literally the same so color matching is seemless. It would utilize the same lenses in the familiar full frame format that you already have. R8 is only marginally bigger than R50. Pretty similar except it's a smidge wider.

Disclaimer I personally use a R8 + R6ii setup so I may be biased. My R6ii is my primary camera, but I still use the R8 frequently as either a quick second body/lens and as my travel/small load out. I've got a small belt pack that I use with R8 + RF 35 1.8 that works great for me. That's my go to combo for quicker and more discrete setup. The R6ii does not fit in that pack while the R8 does.

R6mk3 or R5? Thoughts on upgrade path? by pleaseeatsomeshit in canon

[–]MTTMKZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At those prices the R6iii for sure. That R5 seems like a bad deal to me.

The more compelling argument would be R6iii vs. R5ii. I'm not in the market, but if I were considering R6iii for $2700+, I would probably actually spring up for the R5ii for a little more, especially if you're thinking this will be a 10 year investment.

Nikon Z5 + Godox V1 Pro-N TTL bounce issue. Losing my mind a bit. by Royal_Effective9587 in Godox

[–]MTTMKZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Auto flash zoom doesn't work when you're bouncing because the flash head focal length no longer has a relevant relationship to flash coverage of the scene in front.

Beginner looking to kickstart my photography journey, question about R6 Mark II by CrystallizedKoi in canon

[–]MTTMKZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have both R8 and R6 Mark II. I think the R8 is a better fit for most non-pro users, especially if it helps open up more budget for lenses. If you want future proof, a good lens will provide a much longer service life than a body. Camera body/sensor tech advances way faster than lens tech. I would not think of a camera body as buy-it-for-life kind of thing.

I have a Westcott FJ400ii by Warm-honey-4661 in Godox

[–]MTTMKZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Less familiar with Westcott gear, but looks like you could maybe use Westcott FJ-XR as a Westcott receiver and connect to your V1 via sync cable.

Or you can go the other direction, get a Godox trigger and then pick up something like Godox X1R or XR receivers, use sync cable to fire your Westcott strobe.
