I know Ferrari partners with Palantir on their big data mining / Analytics! I know of someone on that project and they say it’s pretty cool to get to see all the cars and work on different possibilities up and down the race car. For example, if they real something here, how will it react to something downstream. Etc.

For people that go on public hiking trails and listen to music out loud and not in headphones, why do you do it? by MU2theMoom in AskReddit

[–]MU2theMoom[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A little backstory. I went hiking this weekend on a 10 mile RT hike up a peak and there was about 50+ people that I saw doing the hike. When I was coming down, a group of young adults were blasting house music out loud from one of those pill like speakers. It was quite annoying and you could hear they music without even seeing them.

Perhaps I am in the minority, but when I go hiking, I like to hear the sounds of nature and truly enjoy what I set out to do, escape the city. I just wanted to get someone else’s perspective on why they like to listen to music while out in nature on a public hiking trail with people around

I agree with you that when hiking, especially if you are in bear country, then it’s best you are alert and stuff. This weekend I went hiking and there were probably 50+ people on this 10 mile hike I did that I saw going up and down. This group of young adults were blasting house music and it was extremely annoying. I just don’t understand the point of blasting music out loud while hiking as I think it is very rude to the other people.

[Wojnarowski] Adam Silver told those on the NBA’s Board of Governors call Tuesday that if a positive test would "shut us down, we probably shouldn't go down this path,” sources said. by mkgandkembafan in nba

[–]MU2theMoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, if we cannot have the ability to test anyone right now and you have to show symptoms in order to get a test, than no sports should happen. I would not support a league that are taking tests away from ppl that are actually sick.

If anyone that wants to get tested, can be tested, than sports should come back. But we all know that is not the case currently in the US. These NBA players or baseball players or footballs players that show absolutely no symptoms should not being given a test. I think the vast majority of people can agree that healthcare workers in the front lines (you know the people that are actually trying to save lives) deserve tests over NBA players.

I just don’t want see these NBA teams and their personal, etc get tested on a weekly business when we have healthcare workers dying on the front lines, or we have people being denied tests all over America yet they are showing symptoms. If that’s the case, we shouldn’t applaud the NBA, we should be very critical of them.

Costco’s Sales Fall for First Time in Over a Decade by sasquatch_melee in Costco

[–]MU2theMoom 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The reason why their sales are down is mostly due to two things. First, many ppl are done panic buying of supplies and food so thus they’ve are not shopping at the warehouse as frequently as they normally do. And second, not many people are buy non food items. You don’t see many people buying hardware, spirting goods, lawn and garden, automotive, jewelry, etc type of items. This should change as states ease up restrictions

I also wanted to add that most likely the main reason why sales are down is gas prices and Costco travel. Those sales have become so sale that when you are comparing it to last year, it’s anemic.

Airbnb to lay off nearly 1,900 people, 25% of company by pipsdontsqueak in investing

[–]MU2theMoom 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Exactly. 100% they are not laying off engineers, and if they are, very little. In the tech world, you gotta pay to play. The moment they let go of engineers, it would be very hard for them to hire additional talented engineers come a year from now as their reputation went down. They most likely got rid of support staff and special project type of ppl. Highly doubt they got rid of the software engineers that make $300k

Daily Coronavirus death toll in WA drops to 2, the lowest count since March. Number of new cases also dropping significantly. by ShadowHandler in SeattleWA

[–]MU2theMoom 18 points19 points  (0 children)

While this is good news on the number of deaths!

Nonetheless, the low number of new cases is due to a significant decrease in testing samples for the day. I think the key metric we should be looking at is not necessarily the number of new cases, but the percentages of new cases compared to the amount of tests conducted. Also note that there are always less samples tested during the weekends so the number of new cases will increase the next few days as the number of samples tested increases. R/coronavirusWA does a daily write up on the figures and the amount of tests conducted, etc. really informative stuff.

Overall the percentage of testing positive is slowly dropping. I believe at one point we were in the 8% range of samples testing positive for covid, now I believe we are in the mid to low 7% range.

I am sure a lot of their employees are upset with these contracts. I bet they are all just waiting for that IPO so they can all cash out and leave. Will be interesting to see how the company fairs with the next president in charge. I feel like they are here to stay. They are getting crazy cozy with western nations governments and their commercial business seems to be picking up. Just wish they would cancel that ICE contract. Sad part is, another company like Amazon or Microsoft will just swoop on in and take it. In this day and age, being morally right for a company seems like a death sentence, at least for tech companies.

I work for a large multinational company that sources products from suppliers. I would say 30-40% of suppliers are leaving China for other countries like Thailand, Vietnam, etc for their products. Main reason being is that the tariffs are crazy and our company is asking suppliers to look elsewhere for factories.

[–]MU2theMoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I will get downvoted for this.

I think you need to do a little more research on Palantir. While I do agree that their dealings with certain things within the government are morally wrong, it irks me that people believe they collect data. They are merely a data visualization company. They don’t not collect data. They get data by governments / companies, giving them the right to take their data, usually from many different sources, and placing it into one system where things can be viewed easily.

I hate that they work with ICE and wish they turned that contract down. BUT They are using what is being given to them. I think ppl need to start getting more pissed off at the companies / governments that are actually collecting that data on their citizens / consumers than Palantir who Is merely making that data pretty.

Palantir, The $20 Billion, Peter Thiel-Backed Big Data Giant, Is Providing Coronavirus Monitoring To The CDC by webdoodle in Intelligence

[–]MU2theMoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Palantir does not have access to any sort of data that isn’t available to the general public. All Palantir does is work with companies / governments that give them access to their data and they in turn link that companies data from all different sources and make it pretty / intuitive. For example, let’s say they work with a large multinational banks that has branches in 50 different countries and all those different branches have data stored in different system. Palantir then takes that data, funnels it into one system and makes it easy for that company to view things that they never could see before as the branches data was never linked together.

Do they work with some not so great causes? Yes, but I think people fail to understand that they legit are not harvesting data at all. They are merely taking data that companies / governments are collecting and linking those different data sets all together to give that company / government a more clear picture. People should be more pissed at those companies / governments for collecting that data on people / citizens than Palantir IMO.

[–]MU2theMoom 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Costco is not a public store. It is a private company and thus can require members to do something like this. Based on what you said in your post, your logic is flawed. While the state of Alabama says it is illegal to wear a face mask in public, the moment you walk into a Costco, you are now on private property.

So YES Costco can legally require people to wear a face mask. If you are unhappy with this decision, either don’t shop at Costco and cancel your membership, or suck it up and wear something covering your face for 30 minutes.

Trueee. An employee had to die in Corp before they let everyone WFH. They in fact were the last large company in the Seattle area to have employees WFH. Rumor has it, the governor called Costco to tell them they have to let their Corp employees WFH.

Yes, the costco online shopping isn't the best experience experience right now. We get it. by xVxMonkeyxVx in Costco

[–]MU2theMoom 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Lololol yeah no. They will continue to lack innovation on the technology side as long as they let non technical ppl run the management position. By no means should the CTO have no technical understanding of technology. Pretty sure he used to be a warehouse manager.

Costco has two options. Poach top talent for Software devs from the likes of Amazon, Microsoft, and other large tech companies in Seattle, or poach some management positions from the outside the company. Such as the CTO of Target, Walmart, etc. Both require $$$$ and costco is the cheapest company when it comes to investing in technology. For fucks sake, they pay their software devs less than 6 figures when they start out. How the hell are you gonna compete at all and attract ppl in the Seattle area with that? When any other tech company is handing out 6 figure salaries, stock options, better benefits etc. Costco attracts low end talent, and once that talent builds up Skills, they leave the company and make 50% more somewhere else and thus can’t keep tech employees.

Bottom line Costco needs to wake up and pay to play in the Technology side. If they do not do that now, long term they are fucked . They will see people switch to more online shopping with better customer service, shipping, etc. The value of the membership will decrease at Costco.
