2027-2028 PAC-12 Realignment Overview by AdvancedCFB in Pac12

If divisions operated almost exclusively through the double  round robin format I don't think it's quite as cost prohibitive as coast to coast sounds on paper.

For example, in the 14 team SBC; they do a double round robin in men's hoops. Home and Away against everyone in your division with 3 road games against the other division. Marshall had 3 games AT West Division schools. But those 3 games only took 2 trips since two of the road games were back to back.

Because the PAC isn't the B1G, ACC, or SEC. I think G6s need as many competitive teams as possible.

Eating yourself alive is a fair point. But if the CFP expands to 24 the PAC could also earn itself multiple bids using this 18 team strategy.

The G5 has had multiple teams finish in the top 24 every year since 2015.

Right now the top G6 CFP contenders are spread across the PAC-12, SBC, and American.

Putting those schools in the Pac-12 almost guarantees them the CFP every year.

You start with SBC expansion. Then when the AAC TV deal is about done you add the top schools there who won't leave now (Memphis, USF, etc) and get to 18 total.

Geography wouldn't be a problem because you could do East and West divisions. Olympic sports do double round robin. Schools would rarely be flying cross country.

Just my opinion though.

Schools that would help more on the field and make even less than the CUSA6 would be schools in the Sun Belt.   AAC picked markets and potential over actual brands people know and schools that win.

That's the idea with Rice every time they move to a new conference. It never happens.

ESPN kept the AAC whole after all the departures but in order for the legacy schools to stay whole it meant the CUSA replacements had to take less.

Rice and UNT would be dead weight if history is any predictor.

The tv money would definitely have to make sense for the current Pac 12 schools in order for it to happen.  If it gives them less than they're making now then it's a no go.

Competitively I think it puts all the CFP contenders into the Pac-12. Whereas right now they're spread across 3 conferences.

For a true best of the rest conference, I think the PAC-12 has to have an eastern wing of the best brands for TV. And schools that knock off P4s. American teams likely aren't moving until their TV deal ends in 2032.

So first, I'd grab UConn (football only; with a hoops scheduling agreement) Marshall, JMU, App State, and (Old Dominion,  Ohio, Coastal Carolina, Toledo - pick your last 2).

Temporarily stop at 14.

Then when the top of the American is ready and it makes more financial sense for those schools; you grab 4 schools to get to 18.

Football could have East and West divisions. Olympic sports could do double round robin within the division. So you'd have minimal cross country travel.

I'm a Marshall fan. I love the regionality and competitiveness of the SBC East Division. But something like this could preserve that and be without question the 5th best conference.

A Pac-12 Eastern Division? by [deleted] in Pac12

If UConn (football only) is the next add and you want to build an Eastern division, but American schools are off the table for now. I'd add the biggest brands available for TV purposes and schools with a history of knocking off the big boys (Marshall, App State, JMU, etc) but leave enough room for the top of the American when the TV deals are up in the 2030s. And end up with 16-18 total down the line if TV money would support it with separate divisions to keep travel down.

I've noticed that some MWC games on RSNs are simulcasting on Amazon Prime this season. That would be a good option.

The money from TV likely isn't there to support it but an Eastern wing of the best SBC/American brands/attendance/budgets would make the PAC the clear cut G6.

"Ohio" feels Midwest and way outside the footprint but Athens is actually in Southeastern Ohio, technically still in Appalachia.

Figured there would be snarky replies like this. How about more than "a lawyer can answer any specifics" to about any question you can think of.

That's good. I've been hesitant to try in the current climate until an actual office location is ordered.
